I am attempting to update an existing winforms application, that was created with a dataset control on all the winforms pages. I have ported it from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and I need to update the database section and connect it to the SQL backend using traditional code method.In the Solution explorer, when I click on the Dataset files, and click "Exclude From project" I am unable to build the project.Is it advisable to comment out the code lines that refer to the dataset in the .designer.vb files?
View 1 RepliesDoes calling the Dispose method on a Windows.Forms.Timer call it's Stop method? Or should I stop the timer before I dispose it?
View 5 RepliesI have two forms Form1 and Form 2. I am passing a function with three values from Form1 and want the load event of form2 to trigger this function.. Basically I want to "paint" the values of qseq, midline and hseq on form2
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
[Code].....
When I run this, nothing gets printed on form2 as when load event is triggered thee drawstring method is not called. how can I call drawstring from load method as drawstring takes in arguments and is called from Form1 class.
I am indifferent if you are a VB.NET or C# or other .NET developer. I have a FACTORY class like the following:

When is it appropriate to apply the dispose method to controls?For example in a form that has five group boxes, once the first group box is used to gather user entries and is no longer needed, is it worth it to apply the dispose method to the first group box? Is it needed for local variables, for example a StringBuilder used within a private function which is only used while the function is executing?
View 1 RepliesI was experimenting with ways to get rid of some memory leaks within my application the other day when I realized that I know virtually nothing about cleaning up my resources. I did some research, and hoped that just calling the .dispose() would solve all of my problems. We have a table in our database that contains about 65,000 records. Obviously when I fill my dataset from the dataadapter, the memory usage can get pretty high. When I called the dispose method on the dataset, I was surprised to find out that NONE of the memory got released.
View 3 RepliesI have Overloaded the Dispose method of System.Windows.Forms.Form Class in which I have written some extra code which I need to execute when object of Form Disposes. But when I create the object of Form in 'Using' statement, the 'End Using, statement do not execute my overloaded Dispose method. What should I do?
View 13 RepliesIs there any sense to set custom object to null(Nothing in VB.NET) in the Dispose() method?Could this prevent memory leaks or it's useless?!Let's consider two examples:
public class Foo : IDisposable
{
private Bar bar; // standard custom .NET object
public Foo(Bar bar) {
[code]....
I have a class that has a destructor and a Dispose method (I also inherit IDisposable). Why is it that the only time my destructor gets called is when I call GC.Collect()?
View 2 RepliesI have 2 question, hope somebody give me an explanation: 1. Should a local variable call dispose method and set to nothing? 2. If some method have an arguments which it is a ByVal argument, it means a method create a new object? But If it is a ByRef argument, it means a method don't create a new object?
View 4 RepliesFrom my understanding, .Net will pool SqlConnection objects where the Connection String is the same by default. Will the connection still be pooled if I call the Dispose method? This question is asked under the context of an ASP .Net application that at times makes many hits to the database in a single PageLoad event. I want the connections to be pooled, but would like confirmation that Closing and Disposing of the connection once the data operation is complete does not interfere with .Net's handling of the connection pool.
View 3 RepliesJust moved from VB.NET to C#.In VB to connect and Event Handler to a Sub we use the Handles clause.From what it seems, this do not exist in C#. After creating a simple application with a button I realize that Window Forms Designer automatically created an EventHandler to my button1_Click function (after I double clicked it), in Form1.Designer.cs with this code:
this.button1.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.button1_Click);
But, in VB, the WinForms Designer create the Handles clause in my class, in the function header. So, C# create the default EventHandler in designer file, while VB creates in main class where control resides.
my class inherits from TreeView. In it's constructor, it adds nodes. In the Winforms designer, if I put an instance of the Treeview on the Form, the nodes are visible. That's ok.

I am working in VB.NET 2010 Framework 2.0.
I don't want to allow some properties from going into form's designer file but the those properties will present on the form(property grid). The behavior of these properties will be same always.
I used the following code:
<DesignerSerializationVisibility(DesignerSerializationVisibility.Hidden)>
Public Property GradientBegin() As Color = Color.Red
But the problem I am facing is that -> on the property grid after changing the "GradientBegin" color to other than RED and compiling the program, it is replacing the new changed value to RED again. So I am not able to change the color actually.

My self and most everyone else on our team is having the same issue with VS2008. The designer will not render many forms in designer mode. Currently I am getting this error "The type 'Team.CAD.UI.My.Resources.Resources' has not property named 'view_16'" Well veiw_16 is in the resouces file.
View 2 RepliesI've been trying to figure out how to do this for some time now and keep coming up short, so I'm hoping to get some good suggestions.
I'm making an application that will allow the user to add some labels during runtime, edit their text, and then 'build' the designer that would output code for a scripting language.
The people using this app are creating the scripts using Notepad++ at the moment, but aren't developers in any way and would like an easier, point and click method.[code]...
I'm working on a custom control which requires gradient settings. I created a class to contain the data, and it works perfectly, but i'd like to be able to use Reset in Visual Studio. I got that working for each individual data item, but I can't figure out how to get the designer to call my classes' ShouldSerialize and Reset methods.
Code:
<TypeConverter(GetType(ExpandableObjectConverter)), Editor(GetType(GradientFillEditor), GetType(UITypeEditor))> _
Public Class GradientFill
Private colorDark As Color = StyledColors.DarkFocused

When I open VB projects in Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to view a form view designer I have started getting "File Download - Security Warning" Message prompting a .tmp file in the location of my project. If I close all open designers and rebuild the project I am then able to open the designers OK.I saw a suggestion to 'restore file associations' in Visual Studio and tried this but with no success.

Please remove any changes and try opening the designer again.when i comment it its started working fine can any one suggest me wat to do and why it is comming
View 3 RepliesI created a new query in the dataset designer. There are now 2 queries there. The original one and the new one.I also added named parameters in the Where clause of the 2nd query.This is the query in the new one:
SELECT ID, FatherName, MotherName, EmergencyContactName,
EmergencyContactRelationship, Address1, Address2, City, State, Zip,
PrimaryPhone, SecondaryPhone, Emaile.

I looked at the Dispose() method in System.Data.SqlClient.SqlTransaction (using a decompiler):

Why does everyone say in forums that it is Rolling back in the dispose? Where does it rollback?
i want to which way is better when concentration is on processing speed. i want to call a method that compute some data that method is on another form in my windows form application then what you prefer is better way 1) to call that method in another form and use returned value or create similar method in form where it is required.i want to make it's processing fast.

I am using:

I attempting to dispose / close a startup form from a sub. Basically, I using the filesystemwatcher to watch for file creation, if the file is created, run some code and close the form.how to pass in some reference form. Using and new to vs2008. A bit of leap from VB 6.0.
Imports System.IO
Public watchfolder As System.IO.FileSystemWatcher
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

I'm creating a base class for a button that inherits from Control as opposed to ButtonBase.
I'm using reflector to look at ButtonBase to make sure I don't overlook anything important and I'm puzzled with the contents of the WndProc method. There's checks in there for things like button up, click and capture changed, which as far as I can tell are all handled within the relevent 'On' methods of the class.
