View 1 RepliesI'm trying to develop an app with Microsoft's Visual Basic Express 2008 to run on the .net framework 1.0. Is there something I can download to do this or do I have to require the latest framework to be downloaded?
View 1 RepliesIf my understanding is correct, Win 2000 only supports .NET 2.0 Framework. I am using VB2008 Express to write an app that I would like to install but I believe VB2008 Express utilizes the .NET 3.5 Framework.
Is there a way to compile my app so that it only requires the .NET 2.0 Framework? Or, more directly, is there a way to install apps written with VB2008 Express onto PC's running Windows 2000?
I just came upon this article here which can turn your day to day visual basic app to run on mac os x. Here is the link: http://mac.sillydog.org/dev/visual_studio.php The thing I don't get is that the author doesn't tell us specifically what to download, and where to get all the files. He's a bit vague... Can anyone make this clearer to me?
BTW: I am using VB.NET although the author uses C#. I think it will still work though.
I am a software developer developing in VS2005. I write mainly VB.Net application but also write PDA and ASP.Net apps. I am still using .Net Framework 2.0. Can anyone suggest and sites where I can keep up to date with things?

View 2 RepliesI am using Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. Some of the programs I am writing make extensive use of External files (saved games, data, item lists, etc.) I could use an easy way to get these files to ride allong during deployment (cd mostly). adding them to the resources works for some static pictures, but custom structures into lists of info to read and write from are beond that features abilities, same with the settings feature. I have found in other help referance to "MageUI.exe" so is downloading a .net SDK my solution or is there a better trick I can use?
View 2 RepliesI have recently decided to give .net another chance, but i have a few questions about it before i get really into it. RE: Files, I use random access files to store data as opposed to databases (namely i don't see the need for a database for storing so little information(records <200 max) knowing that it is an older system and less "cool" i don't care...) Will vs2010 express read, write to random access files? Would it be done kind of like vb6 (which is my current vb version)? I will be needing to print the text of rich text boxes, is vs2010 express capable of doing this?
View 7 RepliesI am attempting to write a speed/distance calculator using visual basic 2008 express edition. I have gotten the program to do most everything I need but am having some difficulties and have been trying to fix them for 2 or 3 days now without any success. Will somebody, anybody please tell me how to fix the problems. The calculator should display the distance traveled when the speed and time are entered. This is the only major requirement. However, It needs to have all info input via a list box with popup windows displayed for speed entry and then again for time entry. I would like a label outside of the list box to show "Total Distance Traveled" and I would like the list box to display the following information

View 2 Replies what WPF based apps are?Is it an application that runs under Silverlight? If so, how?I know; Windows Forms based apps, console apps,DLL _ Class Library Projectsand I've had an introduction to ASP.Net.What I mostly want to know is, if WPF apps are for Silverlight then do they also run in a server based fashion like anASP.NET website would when you create ASP.Net webpages? Is it a way of creating what looks like a FORMS BASED application but it runs in a browser instead or what? Please enlighten me a bit further as I have no idea what WPF is all about.
I need to write a program in VB 2008 express that takes an user entry from a textbox and strips out all the spaces, changes it to either all upper case or all lower case then checks to see if it is a palindrome. I must also include a loop structure and a decision structure. I have seen bits and pieces of code but I do not really know how to put them together. Basically I need it from the button click to the end. ?
View 3 RepliesI cannot use Visual Basic 2008 at all. When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1.
When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.
I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.
Here is the programs I have installed:
Operating system: Windows XP
Microsoft .net framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET framwork 1.1 Hotfix(KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2

All the security updates and hotfixes for Widows XP.
I'm just using the default SQL Server Express in my vb 2008 express edition as my database server for my database operation. When I tried to update the records on my table I got a runtime error which indicates the error on this line 'myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()'and it highlights a yellow background on it. The runtime error says "SqlException was unhandled: An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'Number'. ".
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Private Sub Button3_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button3.Click

I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.
Is it possible to connect to a database on SQL Server R2 Express from Visual Basic Express? I am following a set of tutorial videos done in SQL Server 2005, but cannot seem to connect to create the database. I have created the database in SQL Server R2 Express, but cannot connect. Is there a work around?
View 4 RepliesHere is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.

Is VB Express 2010 slower to compile and run that older versions of VB Express? I've installed it this weekend and it seems a little sluggish on my quad core computer with 1 gig of RAM. I have VB Express 2005 installed for my students at school and it seems to fly just fine. Those school computers are older P4s with 512k of RAM.
View 7 RepliesI am using an Application server for calling Oracle Reports and I have a URL to call the report. When the report is called the server converts it into PDF but when report contains large data it takes a lot of time to load. I want to do in asp.net that when I call the report url it opens the PDF file and copies it into the root of my web folder. The next time when I call the URL it opens the PDF file and creates a new PDF on backend for next call. I have made this function to download file

Basically, i am trying to determin if an application made for 1.x will run on a computer with just one copy of the .NET framework installed which is a higher version than what i am targetting, ie: it only has one copy of .NET 2.0, or 3.0, or 3.5 or 4.0 - has one copy of either of these and thats it, the hypothetical computer would not have 1.0 or 1.1 installed.

Usually when you right click on an application, and then click on properties, you can find the applications exe name. Such as, explorer.exe, mspaint.exe, and much much more. But I can't find the exe name of any of my apps.
View 7 RepliesIf I control both applications, what is the best way to communicate between 2 exe's written in VB.Net. For example, I want to drop an XML file from one app, and pick it up with the other, but I do not want poll for the file. I've heard of named pipes, but I found it was complicated. What's the most effecient way to do this?

I'm developing a media player app and upon looking at it for a week now, it seems really bland. I would really like to add some animations for it (besides just moving forms with x,y locations) but have no idea where to start.
Are more complex apps/designs/animations better suited for a language like c#/c++? I've never done animations before (except simple form moving) and I think now would be a great time to get some opinions!
You could probably say this would linger more so on 3d images and 3d animations
