MsgBox "Access Denied! Either Username or Password is incorrect!", vbOKOnly + vbCritical, "Security Login"
txtUsername.Text = ""

.net - Provide Access To This Custom DAL?

May 13, 2010

I'm writing a custom DAL (VB.NET) for an ordering system project. I'd like to explain how it is coded now, and receive some alternate ideas to make coding against the DAL easier/more readable. The DAL is part of an n-tier (not n-layer) application, where each tier is in it's own assembly/DLL.

The DAL consists of several classes that have specific behavior. For instance, there is an Order class that is responsible for retrieving and saving orders. Most of the classes have only two methods, a "Get" and a "Save," with multiple overloads for each. These classes are marked as Friend and are only visible to the DAL (which is in it's own assembly).

In most cases, the DAL returns what I will call a "Data Object." This object is a class that contains only data and validation, and is located in a common assembly that both the BLL and DAL can read.To provide public access to the DAL, I currently have a static (module) class that has many shared members. A simplified version looks something like this:

Public Class DAL
Private Sub New
End Sub
Public Shared Function GetOrder(OrderID as String) as OrderData

[code].....

This cleans it up a bit, but it leaves a lot of classes that only have references to other classes, which I don't like for some reason.Without resorting to passing DB specific instructions (like where clauses) from BLL to DAL, what is the best or most common practice for providing a single point of access for the DAL?

Asp.net - Provide Strongly Typed Access To The Session Object

Nov 6, 2009

What is the best way to provide strongly typed access to the session object? I am planning on turning on Option Strict, which is causing the compiler to complain about my lazy programming technique of directly accessing the session object:

Dim blah As Integer = Session("Blah")

My initial thought is to create a class that wraps the session and provides strongly typed properties for the information stored in the session. However, I cannot decide if the class should be a singleton, or instantiated on every use, or where the code should reside (i.e. within the web project or within a class library).

I'm leaning towards a singleton in my class library, but I don't know if that is the best solution, or if I am missing any other possibilities.

Proposed Solution:

Public Class SessionAccess
Public Shared Property Blah(ByVal session As HttpSessionState) As Integer
Get

Re-write Conditional Logic That Involves Checking Three Nullable(Of T) Values In An Equality Operator Overload?

Jan 28, 2011

So I'm writing the equality operator overload (Operator =())for a custom object, and the resulting mess of If conditionals is just an eyesore. But so far, it seems like the only sane way to check the values to as to match the specific behavior of this object.

The rules are:Num1 is required, period, and both the left and right operands and must be equal for True. Else, False.Num2 is optional, but if specified, must be present for both the left and right operands, and must be equal for True. Else, False.Num3 is optional, but can only be specified if Num2 is also present. Else, False.Num3, if specified, must be present for both the left and right operands, and must be equal for True. Else, False.

[Code]..

I also know that I could cache elements of the checks into booleans and then use those to reduce the amount of text. But that seems like a waste of cycles just for code readability. So I wanted to know if the SO community had better thoughts on reorganizing it, just in case I'm being too verbose with my checks.

Provide A Status Window In VB2008 When Calling Access 2007 Runtime Modules?

Mar 25, 2012

I am looking for some help in finding the best way to display a progress window for a module I am working on.I have a VB2008 app using an Access 2007 db. One of the MODULES in the Access db does a masterfile update and I want to show the user what is happening in process.

The VB2008 app calls the Access module to do all the work which is FAR FASTER than having VB2008 do all the work. The goal is to have a small window popup and display the progress. Once the process is done, close the window. How would you do this? Use a Access form? That works but it not clean looking at all. Is there something else that might work better?

Something like a msgbox that opens and can be updated while the process runs. Once the process is done, it can be closed. The user will not need to interact with this window - it's just to show the applications progress.

Conditional Code Checking In A Card Game?

Jul 16, 2011

I have conditional code checking in a card game Im working on and it just feels wrong.I m looking for a better way.Right now, all my functions return a card. If I get a card Im usually done and can fall out of my nested structure. If I dont get a card I have to test a condition If card is nothing. And this condition gets repeated ad-nauseum.Here is a small sample of the code.

card = FindMaxTrump(playableCards)
If Not card Is Nothing Then
'If we found a trump at all[code]....

This might be a fine way to do it, but the constant check for a null card is what has me wondering if there is a better approach I'm missing.

MS Access Function To Return Conditional Column For Query?

May 21, 2009

I'm working on an access database and there is a problem I can solve in a circumvented way but I was wondering if it can be done by using a function in query. The case: I have a main data table and 2 other tables joined to it.

maintable
country | city...... | postalcode [code].....

From one of the tables I select the respective zone for the postal codes in the main datatable, ie. if the row's postal code column contains 1000 (just an exmple) then the postal code is searched in the "zone" table "from" & "to" columns using "between", and it results in for example "zone1" (zone column). This is a clear thing, it works okay. However I need to select the respective rate column (based on the rows' weight column) from the rates table selecting the appropriate zone.

I can solve this by a switch statment (select country, city.... switch( zone="1", [1], zone="2", [2] etc.) but it gets very tedious when for example I have a rate table with 15 columns, you can imagine that.My question is if I could create a custom function which returned the respective column based on the result of the zone column.is there some way to get the function's return value to be translated in the select statement? for example select country, city....getzone("rates",[zone]) .....

I know that the rates table do not follow the relational database's main principle and it should look like fromkg | tokg | zone | rate and it would work like a charm with "where"but these tables are changed regularly and I receive them in excel...but maybe transforming the tables each time by unions would easily solve my problem doesnt it?I'm still interested if VBA custom function could be used for such a purpose.

Conditional Code To Open Different Forms Based On Dropped Text?

I have three groups in Listview1 and I would like different forms to open up based on the group each dropped item belongs to. I was able to open Form2 on drop by adding Form2.Show() at the end of the ListView_DragDrop handler sub, but this opens forevery item and I want different forms to open depending on the ListViewGroup the item belongs to.I set the items and groups in the property windows and not in code; I do not know if this makes a difference. So here is the code I have on Form 1 where the listviews are:Public Class Form1

Write A Protection Procedure Which Will Allow To Create A License Key For Users?

Apr 9, 2010

I am trying to write a protection procedure, which will allow me to create a licence key for our users. This licence key will ensure that the software can only run on the registered system, and will allow the user to access only specific areas of my program which is relevant to them.

I am thinking of using an RSA style approach to this where I want to be the only person who can create the registration keys. But I want to allow the program to be be able to decrypt the key. This is to prevent the average user from being able alter the key and remove any restrictions which are being imposed on the program by the license key.

The process that this would take is to produce a host id which has went through a series of tasks to distort the actual value from the user will return this code us, and from this host id I can then work out the original value of the code. Using these public and private keys I can then encrypt license key information.

However I would like to know how I would implement the private key encryption and key generation program in .NET, so that I can get this setup working in a manner which will allow me to generate keys and allow the program to decrypt keys.

Users Should Not Have Access To SQL Server

Apr 13, 2010

Is it feasible to deploy a VB.NET windows forms application with a SQL Server back end where no users have direct access to SQL Server? The idea is that there is no way someone at the client site with admin capabilities could mess up the data definition, or directly alter data. I always assumed that somebody with the client should get admin capabilities, but perhaps not.

The application will have to have the capability of creating logins, doing backups, perhaps running scripts (encrypted?) For upgrades, and whatever else a user with elevated privileges would do. I guess the application would have a hard-coded account with admin privileges for this purpose. Is this a common way to deploy an application? The application uses SQL Server Express, which is installed with the application. The database will be installed with the application.

Php - Prevent Users From Being Able To Access A Webpage Via Web Browser?

This program is going to submit GET data to our webpage. However, we don't want users accessing the webpage any other way than the program. We thought about user-agent authentication, which we will implement, but user-agents can easily be spoofed.

how can we prevent users from accessing the webpage directly, instead of through the program?

Currently we will be implementing:
