I'm trying to create a VB.net application which reads each line from an XML-file (or ini file, doesn't matter) which dictates what the name of a string should be.

I',m using a method in a COM component. The method looks like this [code] 'What to do now to read the different strings returned? Next i've worked with simpler types but not **BSTR.
View 1 RepliesDoes Anyone know How to read multi-line strings? I am using XmlWriter to write a Multi-Line Textbox to an Xml Document. The Trouble Is I can't figure out how to get the reader to read that multi-line element. I know the writer is writing it in multi-line, but the read just squashes the lines together. Does anyone know how to read that multi-line element properly?
View 4 RepliesI want to make something to read the text/strings sent to a server and maybe detect if the server is crashed or not and something to and some thing to send text/strings to a server maybe using winsock P.S. I also want to make something to crash my server.
View 2 RepliesOk, so say the string is: <a href "[URL]">abc</a> And I just want to get the text "abc" from between the <a href "[URL]"> and the </a>. How would I do so? I dont think I can use the split function, can I?
View 9 RepliesI need to read strings by stream! Is this possible? I've been searching for quite a while now, without results.So what i have is an application which gets song lyrics. The lyrics come in a string and i need to separate the string into multiple lines. Just to make that clear, lets say that im getting this text and put it into a string:
Bla bla bla..
Na nana na
And in string format = "Bla bla bla... Na nana na" but what i need to do is separate them into its original, line by line.I created an for each loop which looked for upper chars and when found, create a new line. But that didn't work out so well since the lyrics are written in proper english, using the upper "I" everywhere. So i created a new loop which ignored "I":es if they were followed by a space/blank " ". That didn't work either, it skipped some sentences.
Say I have a List(Of Tag) with Tag being an object. One member of Tag, Tag.Description, is a string, and I want to make a comma-separated concatenation of the Description members.Is there an easier way to do this than to read the Description members into a List(Of String) and then use the Join function?

I have a situation where I have a vb.net program that uses two connection strings. This program will be used on multiple web servers on multiple domains and the only difference for any of them is the two connection strings.What would be the best solution to read in these connection strings from a file separate from my actual .vb code?
Ideally I want to be able to drop the .vb and the connection string file into its own folder on any number of asp.net websites and not update anything else (for example add any connections to the web.config or anything) than the external file containing the connection strings, I assume something like xml would suffice?
In VS2010 how can I write and read some configure strings in app.config.
I wanted to add PrinterPort, PictureDirectory, ApplicationDirectory,LastImage, ecc
I'll start off by saying I am using Visual Studio 2008 Standard. I am creating a program that will open installed programs using short code. For instance, if a user types in 'npp' then Notepad++ opens. I have it working just fine to respond to the predefined commands, but I would like to expand it so that the user can define their own settings simply by typing the program directory and the custom short code they want: Example: If I am an end user and would like to say define a short code for Windows Media Player, I would simply type the following: (Assuming Excel or likewise is used to open the csv file).

I'm having problem reading Binary file that has two types of data in it; Strings and numeric data in decimal format.[code]...
1. The loop doesn't stop, and it gives me "Unable to read beyond the end of the stream" Error..
2. The output isn't accurate, apart from a few random correct strings and numbers..
3. After the loop is fixed, how can i save the data to an Array or write it to a text file?. Can the be saved line by line so that the output file has the same number of lines?
4. As you can see in the code, I've tried writing data in a file, but it doesn't work.. Messagebox does show some data (even though it's not accurate), the file however doesn't contain any data..
i am working on a project where i select from a list box what entry i want to change (out of a set of 27)and then i have to select the entry, enter the details in the text box, hit ok and then i was trying to make it store the string it made under a deceleration.

I am working on a UDP Client/Server, and currently i have them sending back and forth strings, which i convert to bytes, and then open the bytes to read. I want to now send an Object instead of those strings, which includes multiple unsigned integers and strings.
View 39 RepliesI have a list of strings. For each string in that list, I want to prepend another string. I wrote a method to do it, but I was wondering if there was something already in .NET I could use to do this. It seems like something that could be built in, but I was not able to find anything.
Here is the method I wrote:
Private Function PrependToAllInList(ByRef inputList As List(Of String), ByRef prependString As String) As List(Of String)
Dim returnList As List(Of String) = New List(Of String)
For Each inputString As String In inputList
returnList.Add(String.Format("{0}{1}", prependString, inputString))
[code].....
It works, but I would rather use built in functions whenever possible.
I'm migrating from VB6 to VB.NET, in hence my questions below:
I have to write a function that returns array of strings.
How can I initiate it to empty array? I need it since I have to check if it's empty array after it returns from this function.
Is list of arrays better for this purpose? If I use a list - Is it empty when it firstly defined? How can I check it it's empty?
I have been looking for examples to find the string between two strings. This top one works fine;
Public Sub ReadData(ByRef keywordStart As String, ByRef keywordEnd As String, ByVal filename As String)
Using reader = New StreamReader(filename)
[Code].....
Now the first one is fine - Ext_Volume is result of the string between the strings <Volume> and </Volume>. <Volume> and </Volume> are unique so this is straight forward.
However the second one - "^FDExp:" is unique, but "^FS" is not unique. There are occurances of "^FS" before and after "^FDExp:".
How do I get the string to search AFTER the occurrence, not before etc?
Dim str As String
Dim str2 As Array
str = "blabla duhduh"
str2 = str.Split(" ")
Say the string is something like
bla bla bla bla (cat) bladfdskdfd dsgdsdksf (dog)
dfdshfdskdskfsdfkhsdf sdkfhdsfkdf (kathy) fdsfhdskfhdsfkd (doggy)
I want a generic.list (of string) containing
cat
dog
kathy
doggy
How to do that with regular expression in vb.net
Later I want to do something more complicated like getting all strings between "url":" and ", from this strings

Is there an easy way to find a certain string within a string and then return the strings that you find as an array?I have written this:
Public Function FindStrings(ByVal strSourceString As String, ByVal strStartString As String, ByVal strEndString As String) As String()
Dim StringStartposition As Integer
Dim StringEndPosition As Integer
Dim Currentposition As Integer = 1

I have this string called time. It's value is in this format: HH:MM:SS The numbers change, but the format stays the same. I want to separtate the code into 3 strings Hour, Minutes, Seconds.
View 2 RepliesI have a DataGridView that has some columns with dates. It binds to an in-memory Datatable which gets loaded from an string array of data passed back from the backend Some of the rows returned have nulls for the date columns. Solution 1: If I define the Date column in the DataTable as "string" I can easily convert those nulls to empty strings and display it in the grid as empty strings (desired results). However, if the user clicks on the date column header to sort by date, it doesn't order the rows as you want. You get a purely string sort order. Not acceptable

Here's the weird problem I am trying to solve but cannot get my mind around it. In a text box 1, the user enters 2 or more strings separated by comma. then in text box 2, the user enter 1 or more strings separated by comma. The output then puts the strings from text box 2 between the strings in text box 1
Example:
TextBox1 = visual basic, java, perl
TextBox2 = is better, compared to

There are already multiple threads about this, but i don't have the knowledge about the different SQL databases/methods to make heads or tales from it.I am using an OleDbDataCommand, an OleDbDataReader and the following code

Dim RetVal2 As OleDb.OleDbDataReader
Query2 = New OleDb.OleDbCommand("Select [section], [title], [id] From " & DtSections & " Where [volume] = " & volu & " And [chapter] = " & chapter & "", AccessConn)

I know how to read user input using textbox but it only can read character and numbers. Is it possible that I want to read user input equation?
Example:
User type A+B
User put range of A and B.
1.25<A< 3.56
2.45<B< 9.87
I failed to read the equation using textbox. Is it there are other ways that can use to read equation input A+B?I am using VS2005 and VB.Net. I really new in this programming using VB.Net.
I;m attempting to write code to read several NMEA ports and format the data for archive. When I execute the following code:
Using Commportno As IO.Ports.SerialPort = _
My.Computer.Ports.OpenSerialPort(portName:=port)
Dim Incoming As String = Commportno.ReadLine()
I have created a program that saves the co-ordinates of the users mouse and saves it to a text file to be used as an auto clicker.
