I want to make something to read the text/strings sent to a server and maybe detect if the server is crashed or not and something to and some thing to send text/strings to a server maybe using winsock P.S. I also want to make something to crash my server.

View 9 RepliesI'll start off by saying I am using Visual Studio 2008 Standard. I am creating a program that will open installed programs using short code. For instance, if a user types in 'npp' then Notepad++ opens. I have it working just fine to respond to the predefined commands, but I would like to expand it so that the user can define their own settings simply by typing the program directory and the custom short code they want: Example: If I am an end user and would like to say define a short code for Windows Media Player, I would simply type the following: (Assuming Excel or likewise is used to open the csv file).

It turns out I wasn't checking the path that it was looking up, quite silly of me. Once I tracked that problem down and corrected the offending path, the reading worked just fine. Still baffled at the MSSQL issue, since the articles average less than 10 000 bytes.
Clarification:I am unsure if some of you are under the impression that the file I am trying to read is on my local machine. It resides on the web, on the same server as the script that is accessing it. Just in a different directory.
I wrote an online help desk application that includes articles. One problem I have run into is some of the articles are too long, and get truncated when I put them into my MSSQL database. I tried using TEXT and VARCHAR(MAX) as the data type, but it would still get truncated.So I decided that I would put the articles that are too long into a text file, and have my application read the text file from there. I got this code working in my development environment, but it does not work live:

At first, I thought it was because I did not change the /dev path prefix to /hlpdsk. But even after I changed it, it bombed out. What am I doing wrong?

Here's the weird problem I am trying to solve but cannot get my mind around it. In a text box 1, the user enters 2 or more strings separated by comma. then in text box 2, the user enter 1 or more strings separated by comma. The output then puts the strings from text box 2 between the strings in text box 1

The Trouble Is I can't figure out how to get the reader to read that multi-line element. I know the writer is writing it in multi-line, but the read just squashes the lines together. View 4 RepliesI need to read strings by stream! Is this possible? I've been searching for quite a while now, without results.So what i have is an application which gets song lyrics. The lyrics come in a string and i need to separate the string into multiple lines. Just to make that clear, lets say that im getting this text and put it into a string:
Bla bla bla..
Na nana na
And in string format = "Bla bla bla... Na nana na" but what i need to do is separate them into its original, line by line.I created an for each loop which looked for upper chars and when found, create a new line. But that didn't work out so well since the lyrics are written in proper english, using the upper "I" everywhere. So i created a new loop which ignored "I":es if they were followed by a space/blank " ". That didn't work either, it skipped some sentences.
Say I have a List(Of Tag) with Tag being an object. One member of Tag, Tag.Description, is a string, and I want to make a comma-separated concatenation of the Description members.Is there an easier way to do this than to read the Description members into a List(Of String) and then use the Join function?

I have a situation where I have a vb.net program that uses two connection strings. This program will be used on multiple web servers on multiple domains and the only difference for any of them is the two connection strings.What would be the best solution to read in these connection strings from a file separate from my actual .vb code?
Ideally I want to be able to drop the .vb and the connection string file into its own folder on any number of asp.net websites and not update anything else (for example add any connections to the web.config or anything) than the external file containing the connection strings, I assume something like xml would suffice?

View 9 RepliesI'm creating a program in VB.Net that heavily interacts with 2 large MSSQL databases. I do not know a ton of vb and I'm fairly new, but I would assume just having the connection strings in the code and releasing the program it would be quite easy for someone to reverse the program and get my connection info? correct me if I'm wrong. My question is I'm wondering if there is a safer way to use a connection string in my program. Would I just have to encrypt my app? Create a module or dll?

1. The loop doesn't stop, and it gives me "Unable to read beyond the end of the stream" Error..
2. The output isn't accurate, apart from a few random correct strings and numbers..
3. After the loop is fixed, how can i save the data to an Array or write it to a text file?. Can the be saved line by line so that the output file has the same number of lines?
4. As you can see in the code, I've tried writing data in a file, but it doesn't work.. Messagebox does show some data (even though it's not accurate), the file however doesn't contain any data..

I've added my connection in Data Sources and it works, and I can also drag a table to a page in design mode, but I can't figure out how to access it in code. Here's what I get when I drag it in:

I have this simple-minded query:

This query works as long as none of the concatenated values are not NULL. If any is null, the address does not show.
I tried this:
select IsNULL(a.str_number+' '+a.str_name+' '+a.str_suffix+' '+a.str_apt AS addr,'') from table
What I would like to accomplish is to replace NULL with empty space if the value is null but I still get no values.

I have come up with a solution which may work. Its preety over complicated too me but this is the only way I could think of?
What I need help on is a code so that after every ".txt" it will place a "/" so the string will look like this:
document1.txt/document2.txt/document3.txt/
Then I would use this code to split the string:

I need to check the test result with the data from database, to find out which test result is failed. If there is a fail test result, I will show an alert to the operator and stop the checking process. Until the operator close the alert, then the checking process will continue from the last read point.
