[2008] Installing Dotnet Framework On Another Machine?
Jan 15, 2009
I have written an app using VS2008 and i now want to run this application on another computer. I need to have the dot net framework installed right?
Is it possible to use the VS2008 DVD to install just the .Net Framework on the new computer?
If not how do I install the .Net Framework on this machine?

How do I tell what version of the dotnet framework is required by my application?I am using Visual Studio 2008.I have these installed on my machine:
.NET FW 2.0 SP 2
.NET FW 3.0 SP 2
.NET FW 3.5 SP 1
Are the service pack 2 updates inclusive of service pack 1? I don't think I need .Net 2.0 - do I need 3.0 if I also have 3.5 ? Do I look somewhere inside Visual Studio, or at my references?

I realize this post is rather long, but I wanted to give all the information up front instead of people having to ask me for more information. At the end of the re-installation of Visual Studio 2008, there is this message:
"Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard. MSI returned error code 1638" in the log file dd_error_vs_procore_90.txt.
I have searched on Google for this whole message and found some references to this error, but I have done what they said worked for them and it did not fix the problem for me.When I searched for just "MSI returned error code 1638", I got that it cannot install something because it is already installed:"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel".In Add/Remove Programs I see these two programs:
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.3
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.4
Are these programs/versions what the error is refering to? Am I safe to remove them and depend on the similarly-named item which would be newly installed with Visual Studio 2008 - "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard"? I still use SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on my computer, as well as 2008. I had installed VS 2008 on my computer before without this problem and also have VS 2005 and 2010.

We are using a Windows 7 virtual machine as a testing platform for our VB 6 application. Th application utilizes an Access database. The application locates the database by looking at a configuration (ini) file. When I install the application on the virtual machine, it places a database where InstallShield directs it to and writes that path to the ini file. All well and good. However, somehow a second copy of the database is created in a user local folder.
If the user uses the "run as administrator" option, the application uses the database that is in the location designated in the ini file and that works fine. But if the user does not select the "run as administrator" option, the application apparently somehow attempts to use the local database and is unable to locate it.
Is this behavior is peculiar to the virtual machine, or is it something we need to be concerned about on "real" Windows 7 systems? If it is peculiar to the virtual machine, is there some way to get the virtual machine to behave more normally?

I create Win32 DLL using vb.net (VS2005), for later use in vb6 application. I've try and it's workout (on my pc). I'm wondering if theres a way to distribute that dll files with my vb6 application, without installing net framwework on target pc.
If you wonder why i'm doing this, the answer The current application on target computer still using application that i've develop with vb6. My company have a plan to migrate to VB.net so i have to update a litle by litle so the old application still running until the new one (which i developed using vb.net) is ready to lunch. As you all know programs created in VB require the .NET framework to be installed on the end-user's computer, BUT when I create my ClickOnce deployment you would think that it would automatically include a .NET 4.0 setup for the end-user... it does not. I have tried creating all sorts of installers which install the Microsoft .NET folder onto the end-user's machine, or the actual .NET executable file. None of these seem to work, even in third party installation creators like InnoSetup. When I go through Microsoft Documentation like this: "How to: Install Prerequisites with a ClickOnce Application" all I get is something I've already tried and does not work.
I need everything in one large setup.exe file. I don't care if it is going to take up so space, as long as it is in one file and everything is embedded together.
How do I package the .NET 4.0 framework AND make it install WITH my VB.NET application IN ONE Setup.exe file? If this isn't possible, where can I find the Actual Files of the .NET 4 Framework?

I've done a vb.net program. The program basically uses few reference for example system.io etc.In order for my program to run on another computer, the computer need to have .net framework 2.0 installed.Instead of installing the whole framework, can I just pack the references I used in the program together with the vb.net program.? What packager/packer program should I use and how do I go about doing it..?

My application runs using Framework 1.1. It runs perfect when the client PCs have Framework 1.1 (without SP).After installing Framework 1.1 SP1, Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 (and their Service packs), it gives a Nullreferenceexception error when adding a row to the datatable. This is the entire exception message

I have checked each of the values getting inserted and they all look fine. I even tried with values hardcoded but in vain. The patches cannot be avoided as they are pushed by our Corporate IT and we have no control over them.

I am a new Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition and just finished and distributed my first program. However, one of my users (Using Windows Vista 64-bit) cannot install my program. He gets the following error An error occurred while installing system components for <PROGRAM NAME> Setup cannot continue untill all system components have been successfully installed. Component .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has failed to install with the following error message: "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install." Other 64-bit users on both Windows 7 and Vista don't have this problem.

I am installing an application on a client machine. The application is throwing an exception that I am logging that states "Class Not Registered". This an app written in Visual Studio 2005 using VB.NET. The dll dependencies of my .exe are located in the same folder as the .exe. What class is this talking about and how can I resolve this issue?

I want to distribute this program I've made and it has a database it needs to install. So I made the setup project and put the database in the "application folder".
I built the setup project and ran it. It does successfully copy the database file into the application folder. But when I run the program it says file cannot be found, even though the file does exist and at the path specified where the program says it cannot find the file.

I need to automate the installation of 3 different applications and I need a good starting point.
From what I've been reading, APIs seem like the way to go. But, if I can, I'd like to keep it to managed code.
I've checked with the manufacturers to see if they had any available APIs that could allow me to do the automation, but they have none
What do you all think is the best approach? Is there any .NET methods to assist me? Or do I have to go with APIs and unmanaged code?

I can get the service to run through my code once, but I cant get it to loop, well I can but then the service will not start correctly and just times out while the code is running.
How can I get the service to start and then loop, at the moment it just says starting service and the code is looping but the service wont start! Windows times it out after a few mins.

I've inherited a lot of custom made software for an office, and, while managing it, I've found it performs differently from machine to machine.I mean, some controls get painted in weird ways in some machines but well in another, or just work differently, like in some machines clicking something selects it, and in the next machine clicking the same thing makes it editable.I suspect, o course, of the myriad of DLL the software loads

I'm looking at a small remoting project in VB.NET. Initial research turns up references to msrdp.ocx which my Windows 7 Ult system doesn't have; a filesystem search on the same platform turns up MsRdpWebAccess.dll which doesn't appear to be well documented; finally hunting through COM references in Visual Studio turns up rdpencom.dll labeled "rdpcomapi 1.0 Type Library" which seems to be best documented via personal developer blogs (which isn't encouraging but is a lot better than other options).
My goal is a lightweight remoting application I can deploy to Windows 2000 Client/Server, WinXP x86/x64, Win2k3 Server, Vista x86/64, and Win2k8 Server. Is there anything DotNET Native I can use instead of one of these COM libraries? Is one of these COM libraries better for the job overall than others; and then am I going to have platform-specific compatibility issues if I don't provide support for more than 1 of them in my app?
