I am connecting to a mysql database through vb. I am creating a login page that uses that database. The passwords are stored in the database as md5. Is there a way to convert the input password to md5 so I can check it against the database?

I don't really know why it keep displaying the messagebox that says it failed when I have input the valid strings in the first place.
I'm trying to write vb code to verify a password input by a user to known table passwords in access database. The form has a drop down combo box that has userID's that are selectable. I'm trying to get the index number out of the combo box selection and use that to look up what the password should be. With that information i can then compare the stored password with the password typed into the text box below the combo box. All of the examples i've found that direct me show the code in regular Visual Basic. I'm using Visual Basic 2010 with the .net architecture.

View 8 RepliesI know there are work-arounds like using a Select Case, but in my situation, it would make things a lot easier... especially since I won't know exactly what will be entered. I can't force the user to use a combobox or anything like that either, because it is going to be unique code for every situation. If there is no way of doing this, I will figure something else out, but it will require a lot more work.
View 1 RepliesI have an object with a number of properties (let's say object.one, object.two, object.three). There are about 30 of these properties and they all hold a string ("Pass" or "Fail"). Right now the existing code checks whether the property has value "Pass" or "Fail" and then runs some code that prints stuff out. That is, the same snippet of code is duplicated 30 times, one for each of these properties.
The code looks something like this

I want to use a loop to clean this mess up (each block is huge), but am not sure how to do it. I was thinking perhaps there was a way such that I might be able to construct a string like "object.one" and run some function that will tell the compiler that this is actually an object's property? That way I could create an array containing the object's name like my array = {"object.one", "object.two", "object.three"} and then do something like, in pseudocode
For each string in my array
If (some_function(string) = ...)
...
End If
Essentially, it would take those massive blocks of duplicated code and reduce it to just one block. Is there such a some_function that I am looking for? This is in VB.net.

View 5 RepliesHow would I code a TryParse to get the input from customer from a textbox named Strands and convert it to a number (this number will always be a whole complete number, cannot be 5.6 or 4 1/2 or whatever) then have that Strand number be muliplied by the selected item in my listbox1. This listbox has an access database bound to it with 2 columns Size and Area, the Size equals the Area and I set the Value to the Area column but set the Size to show up in the list box. and the Strands textbox has to muliply by the Size picked, but by the Area # not the Size #. 1 - User enters invalid current password
2 - New passwords do not match
3 - User's account is locked
4 - User cannot authenticate because password is expired
It's case 4 that I'm struggling with, because their is no way for me to take the password the user entered and verify it against active directory without getting an error.
I am implementing a system where the user can Reset their password if they have forgotten it.Once it is reset I want to give them the option of changing the password so that it will be something more memorable to them.The password is hashed and if i enter in the correct old password and new password the password does change.If I enter in the wrong old password and new password the password doesnt change.Is there a way to match the old password with the old password field in code behind so I can throw up an error to the user to tell them what is wrong? I can change the PasswordChar property to an asterisk no problem and even copying and pasting symbols inserted into Word seemed to work - just couldn't find a symbol that looked like a bullet point!
Can this actually be achieved for a standalone exe, or is it something unique to web forms? Surely copying and pasting symbols from Word isn't actually the answer?

In my login form, there's a Forgot Password button. In the Forgot Password form, the user is asked to answer a secret question that he filled up upon registration, and if the answer is correct it will lead him to a Change Password form. My problem is, I don't know how to get then delete and then replace the password of a certain user. I attached some screen shots of my work.
