Work On A .NET Project Built On The 4.0 Framework In MonoDevelop?

Feb 9, 2012

I'm looking around and I "think" I'm reading conflicting statements about MonoDevelop's ability to support a VB.NET project. Some places say it's not possible yet, and other places say that you can with MonoDevelop V2.10... unfortunately I can't seem to find this elusive v2.10.

Do any of you know if this is currently possible (even if I have to install a beta)?

Working On A Project That Is Based On Modules And Plug-ins?

Aug 24, 2011

I'm working on a project that is based on modules and plug-ins. Any of these modules might alter some part of a database in various ways. One module might write or edit one table, while another module might write or edit other tables.

The modules all communicate via events raised on a common object. Therefore, when a person using module A enters a certain change that would edit data managed by module A, the module raises a Proposed Edit event such that all other modules that might be affected by the edit will have a chance to accept or reject the edit. If no module rejects the edit, then module A makes its changes and raises an Edit event, at which time all the other modules make any changes they need to make.

That's the basic pattern, but there's a problem. If I don't share a transaction during the edit, then module A can successfully edit their tables, but module B might fail to edit their table. In some cases, the failure by B should rollback the changes made by A. Therefore, it would make sense for module A to share an open transaction for all the other modules to use while making their changes, and this gets either committed or rolled back, depending on whether everyone was successful, or not.

The problem with that design is that a person could write a new module C that had a bug which caused it to fail to update correctly. That would cause it to signal that the transaction failed, such that all the other modules, which had been working up to that point, would no longer work because this new module kept canceling the transactions. In other words, the modularity of the program has now been lost. Every module depends entirely on every other module that even cares about its data.

In most cases, what would be lost if certain modules failed would be minor, whereas what would be lost if other modules failed would be catastrophic, as there would be no way to re-create the lost data with any kind of ease.As long as this explanation is, it may not be sufficient. At least it might start a discussion. Do the actions of all the modules act in the same transaction, or should they be left to succeed or fail on their own?

.Net Tcplistner Not Working On Windows7?

Feb 7, 2011

If I run into a problem or if I find that I don't fully understand a section of code I go online and search for the information I need. Which is usually quite easy.Ive made a simple chat program using the TCPlistner and TCPclient that can be found on msdn.

In the only problem similar to mine that I was able to find the person was given the advice to change 'AnyCPU' to 'x86' in projects/properties/compile/advanced compile options. I tired doing this but was unable to find any setting that I could change to 'x86'.

Upgrading .Net Project From Framework 1.1 To Framework 4.0?

Feb 2, 2011

I have a solution that I wish to upgrade from Vb.net framework 1.1 to framework 4.0. The solution consists of a number of projects, all but one of which compile to dll's. The master project compiles to a executable which provides a menuing system which dynamically loads the dll's and connects to entry points.

The projects contain normal classes, numbers of forms and also controls, which are either usercontrols or are inherited extensions of standard windows controls. There are a number of third party components (eg reporting and grid controls from Component One, Ribbon control from DevExpress etc).

Asp.net - .Net Iniatialising A Class Using System.Reflection And System.Type To Create A Session Based Singlton Extension Method

Jun 11, 2009

I have had several occasions recently to access a specific class several times over a relatively small time frame. So I've been storing the value of the class in Session and trying to access it on page load, if it's not available creating a new instance and storing that in session.

So instead of constantly replicating the same code for different classes on different pages I'm trying to create an extension method to do this for me.

I'm stuck on what to do when I make my new instance of my class (it would have to have a New() sub)

I'm not sure where to go from here... or even if this is the best way to do it.

Excessive SQL Server Processes For Entity Framework Based Application

Jun 27, 2011

We are currently developing a WPF/Entity-Framework based application. One of our requirements was to allow the user option to select which environment(testing, training, or production) they will connect to when logging in.Each connection option points to its own database. In order to do this we are creating new EF contexts in the following way:[code]We have made sure that all new contexts are being disposed of once its job is completed. The problem is this: when the users are using the application we are seeing hundreds of SQL Server processes in SQL Server's activity monitor. Some individual users have upwards of 30+ processes associated when using the app. Once the user shuts down the app the associated processes all disappear - but while the app is running these processes seem to stick around.

Entity Framework Context Not Working?

Oct 15, 2011

I am trying to figure out Entity Framework but I keep running into issues with the context. I create my .edmx file and it works fine but when I try to declare my context on my pages Visual Studio will not find them. My .edmx file is called YCLModel.edmx and my connectionstring for it is YCLEntites.

I try to declare the context as:

Dim yclcontext as new YCLEntites

I have also tried going into design mode and dragging from the toolbox but when I select my named connection it gives me the following error:

The metadata specified in the connection string could not be loaded. Consider rebuilding the web project to build assemblies that may contain metadata. The following error(s) occurred: Unable to load the specified metadata resource.

Making The GUI A Scrollable Window - Tabs Get Built, Displayed And Disposed As The User Scrolls Left And Right Through The Member Tabs?

Mar 6, 2009

My code is basically a file parser/editor and it handles most files fine as they hold a handful of records concerning family members. However there are a few files that crash when trying to deal with them. Here is the problem. Each family member record creates 3 tabs that hold an average of 3 group boxes each. Each group box holds an average of 3 text boxes. So each member record creates 3x3x3 = 27 text boxes and some files get up to 289 family members which = 7803 text boxes.

The problem is the rare file with 400+ member records = 10,800 text boxes which causes a crash due to using up all the window handles. Each member has a separate tab page (with 3 subpages) but really only a dozen or so member pages are visible in the GUI with scroll arrows to move through them so I was thinking of somehow making the GUI a scrollable window so the tabs get built, displayed and disposed as the user scrolls left and right through the member tabs.

The files are parsed into a 3d list DataList(x,y,z) where x is the page number, y is the group box number and z is the text box number. So all the data is available. The code then traverses MyList and builds GuiList(x,y) where x is the page number and y is the groupbox number with all the textbox.text linked to MyList(x,y,z) locations so all text changes are reflected in the MyList.

I already have a memberCount variable and I am thinking of building, say, the first 30 member tabs with the middle 10 being visible in the GUI. If the selected tab > 20, then dispose of the first 10 tabs and create tabs 30-40.I am thinking I will keep all the member tab pages so I don't have to deal with inserts and indexing problems but just dispose all the group boxes and text boxes for tab pages out of view. I already have a deep clone sub that clones members when the user wants to add a new family member and I am thinking I will have to add something similar when a tabpage is passed in for disposal, it traverses and disposes each text box, then disposes the group box for each group box on the tab page.Additionally, another routine will rebuild the group boxes from the data held in MyList(x,y,z) when a tabpage(x) is passed in.

WCF Window - Entity Framework Data Compression

Feb 3, 2012

I have a WCF Windows service that provides data to 250+ PDAs via compressed datasets and was looking to redevelop both the service and the mobile application to use Entity Framework 4.x models. In order to keep performance acceptable when sending/receiving data on the PDA I need to keep the data size as small as possible and was wondering if its possible to compress a IEnumerable from the WCF windows service? From previous experience with the datasets I got a 80%+/- compression rate and even decompressing the data on the PDA achieved an overal 50% performance importment so retaining similar levels of performance is critical. Could I use a binary serializer and then compress the stream?

One Project That Targets 2 Versions Of The Framework

Oct 4, 2011

I don't think this is possible but thought I'd just double check...

I have a class library project (i.e building this project results in a DLL being created) and I add a reference to this DLL in several of my other applications. This DLL project targets .NET Framework v2.0.

However, some of these apps that use the DLL target .NET 2.0 (or 3.5) and some target .NET 4.0. But because .NET 4.0 does not include 2.0 and 3.5 in it, its possible for someone to have .NET 4.0 installed but not .NET 2.0, therefore meaning that they won't be able to run my app because of the reference to a DLL that requires .NET 2.0.

So the solutions as far as I can see are: 1. Include .NET 2.0/3.5 as an additional prereq for my .NET 4.0 apps... ewww. 2. Create a copy of this DLL project and make it target .NET 4.0 then in my .NET 4.0 apps add a reference to that rather than the .NET 2.0 version.

So far I've been using the second option, which is working fine but its just very annoying having to remember to copy and paste any changes I make in one version of the DLL project into the other one.

So is there any way I can have a single DLL project but have it build 2 versions of the DLL, one targeting .NET 2.0/3.5 and one targeting .NET 4.0? As I've written this down I've just realised I could always build the solution, copy the DLL out to another folder, then change the target framework and build it again to get the new DLL but that's still not ideal.

Using VS 2010 Ultimate by the way in case that makes any difference to the options I've got available
