.NET Enumerations Of Symbolic Constants For String Values?

Jun 1, 2009

I have a list of rather meaningless codes that I'm processing with a VB.NET Windows application. For the business logic I'm writing to process those codes, I'd like to use meaningful constants (like ServiceNotCovered or MemberNotEligible) instead of the original codes (like "SNCV" and "MNEL").As far as I can tell, Enums can only map to numeric values, not to strings. So the best I've been able to come up with is a static class that exposes the constants as static readonly string fields that are internally set equal to the code values, as follows.

Public Class MyClass
private _reasonCode as String()
Public Property ReasonCode() As String

Obtain A List Of Constants In A Class And Their Values?

Sep 21, 2009

I have a class in VB with some constants that represent the string name of my security roles. I need to be able to call a function to return to me a string array(or collection, or whatever) of the values of each of these constants. I will be using it to make sure that my databases Roles table has the same roles as coded into the application.

[Code]...

I'm looking to run a function, i.e. ClassConstantsToStringArray(gettype(Roles)) that will return to me "Administrator","Basic User","Power User" I'm know reflection is the way to go, I just don't know enough about using it yet to get what I want. I found a function on the net that would return to me the constant names in a FieldInfo array but still don't have enough smarts to make that work for me.

Error BC30648: String Constants Must End With A Double Quote

Feb 4, 2011

I noticed that if I leave off the terminating double quote for a string constant in Visual Studio 2010, there is no error or even a warning, i.e.

Dim foo as String = "hi

However, the continuous integration tool we are using flags an error:

error BC30648: String constants must end with a double quote.

Is there some language rule in VB.Net that makes a terminating double quote optional "sometimes"? Is there some setting in Visual Studio that will make it flag this as an error, so I can avoid "breaking the build" in this way?

Enumerations To Array Of (Type) Functions

Apr 11, 2010

I usually always use enummerations as a pass ID of some type with a calculated value using the n^2 notation to calculate the return values. It's easy to derive with squareroots what values are derived from a sum; but most of the time I use the Identifier String to denote a combo box drop down list view. I think this is fairly routine for most developers; since in all my coding or rework I have seen it used commonly by other developers also.

Anyway, I wanted to do some sort of comparisson array of strings to fill the combobox using the *.Items.AddRange() function and it requires an array pass (this typically shrinks the code down considerably) and if you want to mix and match arrays in segments it's easier. So here is the code; for doing so I am assuming that other developers use an "AddToArray" type function like me; if not you have to write the function or just replace the code with the actual adding to array.

''' <summary>
''' Convert an enummeration to an array.
''' </summary>
''' <param name="ConvertTo">Convert to return type.</param>

PictureBox - How To Access Desired Colors From Enumerations

Jun 8, 2011

In my project, it is desirable to access built-in color, dash styles, hatch styles by a numerical index rather than their names. For example, I would like to access the colors in a loop from 0 to 140 and display each of these in side by side rectangles in a picture box. Then later, when I click on the rectangle for a desired color, calculate the index of the color from the position of the rectangle in the picture box and use this index to set another object to the clicked color. I understand the coding for all of this except for how to get the colors from the enumeration in the loop and later, after I get the index from the clicked picture box, how to I access the desired color from the enumeration by using the index obtained from clicking the picture box.

Add Built-in Constants To Program?

Jul 30, 2010

It would be good if visual basic had standard math constants like pi, the Euler number, and others built-in so one doesn't have to define them each time and have the possibility of making typos. Even some of the physical constants in MKS unit could be included like the Boltzmann's Constant, speed of light, permittivity and such. Each could be a special simple like kb for the Boltzmann's constant. Or it could be a properties like phyconst.c for the speed of light, phyconst.kb for the Boltzmann's, phyconst.sb for the steffan-Boltzmann's constant, pmathconst.e for e=2.71.

Make Array Of Constants?

Feb 23, 2010

I've got a situation where I need a table of constants in my app. It's actually a table of 43 formatting options where the description will appear in a drop down and the detailed settings will be used by the codeIt appears that VB can't do arrays of constants. So I've fiddled around with a Constructor in a class that creates a new array then loads up each element with hard-coded .Add statements. It doesn't seem elegant though.So I then decided to try an XML file, that I load in the Constructor and assign the contents to an array. This is what I've decided is the best, most elegant, option - but I'm throwing this question in to see what you people might recommend ! The data is mostly strings
