View 2 RepliesI am in the beginning stages of learning VB.NET and all I want to know is how you link a created Class Library to a Form? I've seen code at the top of the designer window that says <dim objSomething as New somethingClass> What the heck is that and how does it work?
View 4 RepliesThe regularity and frequency of that extolling is an indication of how many people, for whatever reason, don't use the documentation. Some say that I've forgotten what it's like to be a beginner, but I remember using the MSDN documentation as a beginner. I remember that I couldn't always find what I needed and I also remember that I didn't always understand what I found. More importantly, I remember that that didn't stop me using it first every time I had an issue and I also remember getting better at using it over time. So, I'm genuinely interested to know, if you don't use the MSDN documentation?
View 39 Repliesthere are tools (SandCastle?) that can generate an MSDN-like documentation (HTML files) from your source code by using the XML comments above members. I am looking to generate a similar documentation (bunch of HTML files that one can link through), except not from XML comments but completely manually.It is for a custom scripting language, I have to document the available functions, and it would be great if I could do that in this common documentation style. Since there are no XML comments to generate the documentation from (the documentation is for the scripting language itself, not for my source code of the scripting language?
What I'm looking for in detail is a way to generate these documentation files by simply supplying this information for each function:
- Namespace (just the name and maybe a description)
- Function name + description + return type
- List of arguments and their types
from this I would to generate a document where one can first view all the Namespaces, click one (they are supposed to be links) and view all the functions in that namespace. Then you can click on a function name and view its description and list of arguments for that function.In other words: just like these automatic tools do, except now I want to supply this information manually.
While writing this I thought of one way that I might be able to do it: just create namespaces and functions in actual VB code (corresponding to the scripting language functions) and generate the documentation from that, but
1) That seems a little contrived especially if a better tool is available,
2) I would be in trouble with the types of functions and arguments, since they would have to be .NET types and not the types that my scripting language supports.
I'm looking at the following in the Data Types docs for the Windows API:
#if defined(_WIN64)
typedef __int64 LONG_PTR;
#else

I just recently installed VB 6.0, and I went to install MSDN Library (April 2000 Release of the MSDN Library)afterward. I was missing CD 2, but installed the other 2 CDs. It appears CD2 is the primary one for VB. Do you know how I can get this specific CD --OR-- can I just download a newer version (i have been looking for both on MSDN with no luck)?
View 2 RepliesI have dowiloaded vb 2008 express and cannot find the msdn image library. I go to where the intellisense tells me to go and the image folder is empty. Is there a way to download the appropriate library.
View 1 RepliesIs there a link to download the MSDN Express Library without using the [vb]setup downloader/installer? I'm using a dialup connection and I'd like to use a third porty download manager so that I can pause/shutdown/restart the download process a few times. It's 243MB, which would take about 10-12 hours on my connection. I can't tie up the phone line for this amount of time.Is there an external link to an .exe or .msi package somewhere?

View 1 RepliesWhen a user make a program in visual basic, for example, can he/she copy and use some of the code samples provided in the MSDN Library? Is one totally free to use such code in one's programs, and even allowed to sell software containing such sample code, or does one have to massively modify it so that it resembles little of the original.

View 6 RepliesI once was able to insert a Class-Header type XML comment section which structured the describing of a class; I now cannot remember how I did it. I think I either used a snippet or some macro-type character combination that inserted some XML documentation fields which made commenting a class well structured. It may have even been an extension.

I have been writing VBA code for MS Access for years, but am starting my first project that will need to retrieve data from the Internet. I have come across code samples that use "Microsoft Internet Controls" and "Microsoft HTML Object Library", and I can make them available references in VBA, and available methods and fields etc. show when writing code, but I cannot find any documentation for these APIs. Does it come with MS Office on the CDs (if so, where?), or is it available over the Internet somewhere?
View 2 RepliesI am currently attempting to create a VB.Net script that pulls up information on installed printers. I am using Visual Studio 2010 SP1, and as my target program needs to run on older machines, is currently built using .Net 3.5.Looking online, there are several methods on how to do this, one from url...the code is supposed to use System.Management as you can see. However, after importing System.Management, Visual Studio throws an error and states that ObjectQuery, ManagementObjectSearcher, and ManagementObject are not defined.a quick look at the MSDN forums shows that ObjectQuery is a class of .Net 4, 3.5, 3.0 and 2.I figured the error might be because I didn't have the .Net 3.5 SDK installed, so I installed the .Net 3.5 SP1 SDK to no avail.just to make clear, I am importing System.Management at the top "Imports System.Management"
View 1 RepliesI have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver.There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications.The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver.Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.
View 1 RepliesI get a message, "The MSDN collection does not exist. reinstall MSDN." When I try to access any of the HELP features of Visual Basic 6.0. I do not have an install disc for this. Is there a download or a place I can get this?
View 7 RepliesI've createda vb.net class library where I've defined a number of small classes... nothing complicated, just working with strings, sending emails, etc.In another project, I reference the class library and I'm seemingly able to create an instance ofone of tclasses - intellisense shows me all of the plic properties, methods, etc... all looks perfect. No compile errors at all, nothing b gumdropsand lollipops.When I run the app I'm working on that references the class library, it fails at the point where I'm creating an instance of the class and gives me a vague exception, "System.TypeLoadException".
View 2 RepliesI'm posting this there is a relationship with my previous post [URL]
I have two projects, namely:
1. Project1 (Windows Application)
2. Project2 (Class Library)
in Project2 there are several classes:
* frmLogin.vb
* frmCustomer.vb
* clsGlobals.vb
in my case, I want to frmLogin.vb and frmCustomer.vb not called in Project1 and I can only call is clsGlobals.vb
i add AxShockwaveFlash in my form and i want to disable it's right click menu ???
View 8 RepliesI have made a class using New->Class Library. I have 2 constructors, 1 function (that computes length of circle), one subroutine that computes area of circle, and main subroutine.
Public Class Class1
Class Circle
Dim rad As Double
[CODE]...
My problem is when I try to run the program: No errors of syntax.
What I must do? I need to right click in solution explorer add new item->add->class and copy here this code?
After I write the code I chose from the vb menu: Build->Build Solution_name
Before writing the code I choose File->New->and selected class library then save all to save as a project.
Or class library is only a dll file that runs with a windows forms application. (that is added after i write the code for write library).
working around my project i'm using the BackgroundWorker , i've met this trouble. Calling a sub in module that will have to create an istance of a AxShockwaveFlashObjects.AxShockwaveFlash, the system give me this exception:
Unable to instantiate ActiveX control 'd27cdb6e-11cf-96b8-ae6d-444553540000' because the current thread is not a single-threaded apartment.
there's a lot of dlls i've got one in the Release folder and one in the Debug folder under bin, there seem to be one in the obj folder as well.they all seem to work fine, but which should be the correct one?
View 4 RepliesI have two projects; A and B, where B needs to use some classes that are in project A. Hence, I added B to A's solution, and in B I added a reference to project A.
Is that sensible? Or should I rather put those classes in a class library?
I see that if I further want to open form/program B from a menu option in project A, then A needs a reference to B. Which would not be possible if B already had a reference to A. However if I use the class library for the common classes, then it's ok as B doesn't need the A reference.
Does this sound logical? It would be nice to know what are typical reasons for putting projects in the same solution, and if it's advised to use libraries aggressively to refactor common code between two projects, even if it's just a couple of classes.. Yet I've never made my own library, so a bit unsure on when to use it.
i'd like to know if is it possible to use the flashvars properties in AxShockwaveFlash to load a preview image for any the video
View 2 RepliesI'm merging two of my projects that can share a lot of the same classes into one solution with two web applications and a shared class library.
I've literally just dumped all the classes into the class library project and as expected I've got a ton of errors to fix. My main problem at the moment is the connection string. Currently I have this (which is obviously not going to work):
''' <summary>
''' Initialise the data access layer by loading the database connection string from the Web.Config file
