.net - Is It Bad Practice To Access A Data Member Directly
Jul 26, 2010
I recall being told by a professor the following is bad practice. But it makes stepping through code a lot less tedious. I'm just solicting comments on pros and cons:
Friend Class MyClass
Private isEmpty As Boolean
Public Property IsEmpty() As Boolean
I have a small problem that I am sure is due mostly to my inexperience with threading. I have used simple entirely self-contained threads before, but not to a great extent. I understand the basic laws that surround them, such as how a thread cannot access another thread's member directly, and must use delegates.
In the following code i get a warning at line 59:Warning 1: Access of shared member, constant member, enum member or nested type through an instance; qualifying expression will not be evaluated.and.. At line 78 I get this Warning:
Warning 2 Property 'SelectedCustomer' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used.
The program compiles and runs well, but i cant' undesrtand the reason for these warnings. Any Idea ?

We have an assignment to create some XML outputs from data in SAP R/3. We are using SAP .NET Connector, for doing this. The problem we are facing is that there are some fields which are not exposed by any standard BAPI. Unfortunately we cannot create customized BAPI on this particular system.
We are therefore restricted to whatever standard BAPI are available. I have seen on internet that tools like ERPConnect can provide access to tables directly using RFC. How can this be performed in VB, without purchasing any such tool, using or without using .NET Connector.
Cannot appear to be able to get this function to not have the above error.Private Function GetIncidentActions(ByVal FromAgentID As Integer, ByVal ToAgentID As Integer, ByVal incidentAction As Integer, ByVal ActionDate As Date) As String
I have a combobox that is bound to a BindingSource that contains a custom object with multiple Properties.
Is there a way to access a Datamember that is not displayed in the combo box and display it elsewhere. For example, When a user selects a name from the combo box, texboxes (or Labels) populate with Title, PHone, email, etc. All of this data is loaded in the custom object that is bound to the datasource so the info has already been pulled from the db and is in memory.
i changed a class variable to shared so i can access it in all instances of the class, but it caused an error. what is causing this, and how can i fix it?
I am in the processing of migrating from web services to WCF, and rather than trying to make old code work in WCF, I am just going to rebuild the services. As a part of this process, I have not figured out the best design to provide easy to consume services and also support future changes.
say you have a database that you want to store 100 different recipes in. Out of that 100 recipes 20 have 5 ingredients, 30 have 7 ingredients, 30 have 4 ingredients and 20 have 6 ingredients. So what's the best practice for storing an unknown number of items in a database?
Currently what I am doing in these situations is storing them in a single field in a database separated by a comma. Then when I have to retrieve them I split them by the comma into an array. This doesn't seem right to me but I haven't noticed an impact on speed or efficiency, so what would be the best practice to handle this situation?
How do I handle user submitted data to ensure best practice programming? I would like to know what are the best practice programming tasks in relation to users submitting data through a web form to a website. I am particularly interested in any C# or VB.NET commands that should be used through out the process from the moment the user hits the submit button until the data hits the database. I have been reading about reasons why you may want to take precautions such as SQL injections etc.
What is the standard method for accessing back end data, which logon should you use? For example we have applications that require the user to login but then use an admin account to access the data from the backend. But there are also applications that require the user to login and use those credentials to access the backend data.We are in the process of creating an application that will require the user to login and would like to implement the more common method(standard practice) of accessing data.If there are alternatives those are also welcome. This will be made in ASP.Net 3.5 or higher and may include Windows Applications(VB.Net) as well.I dont want to have two sets of credentials. What I am asking is which credentials are normally used to access the Database. For example one one application may access 2 or more database's. Now would you use the same credentials they used to login to the application or would you use the admin account to access the data?Maybe this should be a seperate question but if I ended up using integrated security to access the database would the user be able to simply connect to the database using his AD account? Either through an ODBC connection and MS Access or equiv.
If I have an application that load some assembly at runtime. Is it possible to access the events and the methods of these assemblies direcly, without always using Reflection
Using OpenFiledialog I can access a file. Is there a way that I can include a specific file in the code? This would allow me to access the file directly without the selection process and the application would always use that same file.
I am converting old VB6 code to VB.NET with ADO.NET (OleDB). This is my query that will create a blank table when ran in VB.NET, but then works when ran directly in Access. This code presumably also works in VB6, as I am using the same SQL:
SELECT qryAsOf.name, qryAsOf.type, 0 as opt, 0 as swap INTO qryCon FROM qryAsOf LEFT JOIN qryLinked on qryAsOf.c = qryLinked.lc
I feel like this has something to do with the left join and select into being together, but like I said it is only VB that has an issue with it, Access handles it perfectly.Without the INTO line, this query returns all 600+ rows.
This DOES NOT WORK:
cm.CommandText = "CREATE TABLE qryCon (etc...)" cm.ExecuteNonQuery() cm.CommandText = "INSERT INTO qryCon SELECT ..." '(rest of query above without INTO line) cm.ExecuteNonQuery
This DOES WORK:
cm.CommandText = "CREATE PROC qryCon AS SELECT ..." '(same select as above without INTO, again) cm.ExecuteNonQuery
The CREATE PROC that does work is fine, except I need to insert data into it later, so I get errors about how I need an updatable table. I really want the end qryCon to be a table, but I can't seem to get that to work :(
*However, when I do something like this (using the stored proc (renamed) above which, if viewed in Access, is full of data)
cm.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM storedProc" dr = cm.ExecuteReader
[code]....
This DOES NOT WORK! By the way, I removed the concatenation in the query for readability. It is correct in the actual project.
I would like to be able to read a column of numbers from an Access database into a VB.NET program and then manipulate that data. For example I have a column of numbers and want to add them up and then take the averageThe maths is not a problem but how do I read the column of data into the program. I know how to do this if I first export the Access data into a CSV file, but
I am trying to 1) write code in VB2010 that will get a JPG image from a Access Database field and write the image to a PictureBox 2) write code which will write a JPG file to an Access Database field. I have already sucessfully coded this in VB6, without fully understanding what I was doing.
Browsing the various forum's I have come across a few discussions on this subject, but due to my complete amerture status I don't seem to be able to follow the logic.
Below is the VB6 code
Writing JPG file to DataBase: Dim bytBlob() As Byte Dim intNum As Integer
I have the following pages structure in my asp.net 3.5 website ...i want if anybody directly access any page of my site as [URL] then it will automatically redirected to [URL] How to do this using vb.net, asp.net
Is there any possibility to access directly from a Windows form created in VB.net a protected Excel file? I mean, that the password for opening xls file to be stored in VB.net Windows form. I also have the same problem for a Microsoft Access protected file.
Office 2010; Windows7; Visual Studio Basic 2008 (VB.Net)

The following strSQL string is not working as expected when run in VB.Net Interop to Access: (NOTE: The line-feeds " _" are used below are for reading only - are not in actual code line)
I've encountered a problem which challenges my understanding of access modifiers in VB.Net. I have a class declared Friend. If I declare its properties Public, the application works. If I declare them Friend, the application fails.
Before this, I believed that, in a class declared Friend, it would make no functional difference whether I declared the members Public or Friend. I thought class access declarations applied their restrictions to all nested entities, so nested properties declared Public were effectively restricted as if they had been declared Friend. Obviously, I was wrong. Can anyone explain how access modifiers really work, or point me to the relevant documentation?
Here is a more detailed description of the situation: I have a Friend class called StripTask with properties called StripDate, HistorianDate, and TaskText. I have a collection of StripTasks (called _StripTasks) which is used as the data source for a Syncfusion GridDataBoundGrid. The way the binding works, I need to pass the name of a StripTask property to each of the grid columns so each column knows what data to display. It ends up looking something like this:_DataBoundGrid.GridBoundColumns(1).MappingName = "StripDate". When the mapped properties are declared Public, it works. When the mapped properties are declared Friend, the grid is populated with the correct number of rows, but every cell is empty.
As a follow-up question, is it a good idea to avoid things, such as this Syncfusion binding method, which require me to pass property names as strings? It just feels as if I'm inviting trouble.
I'm a newbie to this forum and want to make sure I don't muck things up and irritate everyone as tends to occasionally happen in some forums.I have a very solid background in MS Access (I use it as a front end to an Oracle database and use DAO methods to create native Oracle statements via pass through queries). I am going through the tutorial on VB 2008 Express download the MS site. I have a number of questions that generally have to do with "I did this with VBA in Access, how do I do the same here?"
I want to collect all stocks information within 2009 & 2010. I stored the required parameters (YMD & stock code) in DB. Is it possible to write a VB.Net windows application to pass all required parameters (post method) to web server and retrieve the web response automatically? (1 - 5 are valid stock code) It is
Now, i have a form which would usually post the text which should be writen, so, can this be done directly, without that form, using httpwebrequest in VB?
I've used .NET for a long time but I've never really been sure of this warning :-"Access of a shared member, constant member, enum member or nested type through an instance; qualifying expression will not be evaluated"Whilst this is not causing an issue and I've not really experienced this problem a lot with my own code, converting some code from an old .NET project gives 10's of these errors.
Code: Protected Function GetContentTypeFromString(ByVal TypeString As String) As MailContentType Select Case TypeString.ToLower
After I formatted my laptop and reinstalled Visual Studio 2005, I receive a lot of same error as below message. "Access of shared member through an instance; qualifying expression will not be evaluated" If I click the error, it direct me to the line and all 102 error suggest me to add "Windows.Forms." before "DialogResult.OK". Should I add something on "Reference"?
