C# - How To Handle User Submitted Data As A Best Practice Programming

Sep 24, 2009

How do I handle user submitted data to ensure best practice programming? I would like to know what are the best practice programming tasks in relation to users submitting data through a web form to a website. I am particularly interested in any C# or VB.NET commands that should be used through out the process from the moment the user hits the submit button until the data hits the database. I have been reading about reasons why you may want to take precautions such as SQL injections etc.

VS 2008 User Submitted Array - Swapping Arrays?

Apr 22, 2012

Create two arrays, ask the user to populate them and display both arrays Swap the contents of the arrays using loops and then display the content.

What is the best method to have the end user populate an array? I am doing this as a windows form. Have multiple text boxes that they have to fill out? Set the elements of the array to the text box values? And how to swap the contents at run time is something I am not sure of. Isn't there a Array Swap function or something? Here is what I have so far:

Note: the bottom section was a test..and it isn't working as expected.

DB/Reporting - Best Practice For Jagged Data Storage

Jun 10, 2009

say you have a database that you want to store 100 different recipes in. Out of that 100 recipes 20 have 5 ingredients, 30 have 7 ingredients, 30 have 4 ingredients and 20 have 6 ingredients. So what's the best practice for storing an unknown number of items in a database?

Currently what I am doing in these situations is storing them in a single field in a database separated by a comma. Then when I have to retrieve them I split them by the comma into an array. This doesn't seem right to me but I haven't noticed an impact on speed or efficiency, so what would be the best practice to handle this situation?

Standard Practice For Accessing Back End Data Which Logon To Use

Feb 8, 2012

What is the standard method for accessing back end data, which logon should you use? For example we have applications that require the user to login but then use an admin account to access the data from the backend. But there are also applications that require the user to login and use those credentials to access the backend data.We are in the process of creating an application that will require the user to login and would like to implement the more common method(standard practice) of accessing data.If there are alternatives those are also welcome. This will be made in ASP.Net 3.5 or higher and may include Windows Applications(VB.Net) as well.I dont want to have two sets of credentials. What I am asking is which credentials are normally used to access the Database. For example one one application may access 2 or more database's. Now would you use the same credentials they used to login to the application or would you use the admin account to access the data?Maybe this should be a seperate question but if I ended up using integrated security to access the database would the user be able to simply connect to the database using his AD account? Either through an ODBC connection and MS Access or equiv.

[Innerhtml] Submitted A Webform?

I'm working on a Habbo easy-login client, but I can't hit submit for the love of god.. my code looks a bit like this:

Me.WebBrowser1.Document.All("Username").SetAttribute("value", txtUser)
Me.WebBrowser1.Document.All("Password").SetAttribute("value", txtPw)
Me.WebBrowser1.Document.Forms(0).InvokeMember("Login")

I'm pretty certain I have the name right for login.. The User and password fill in wonderfully. (I've tried this on other web forms and I couldn't hit submit on them, either)

Asp.net - Can A Page Raise An Event That The User Control Can Handle

Mar 13, 2009

I have done this the other way many times as it makes sense (the page knows about the control as it has been added to the page and can handle the 'child' event)

Is it possible to do it the other way? I think not as the control doesn't know what page it is going to be on

The reason i ask this is that I have a modal popup on the page to ask users to login, and it is only when the user has logged in that I want my user control to go away and execute some code but I am not too sure how to tell the control this has happend?

C# - Generate And Handle User Messages Inside Methods?

Aug 5, 2011

What is the best way to handle a function that might occasional fail to evaluate, but even when it does fail does not require a halt of the parent routine, though sometimes might require an explanation to the user?I have such a function, deep in my code, that returns a number. Codingwise, the simplest approach would be to make the function nullable, and return null when it can't evaluate. That way the calling routine can continue while also knowing the function failed to return a number.

However, depending upon the circumstances, sometimes I want to display the reason for the fail to the user so they know what to fix. Obviously just returning null isn't enough information. Should I be raising messages inside the function itself as it evaluates for anonymous listeners to catch, to be displayed if desired?(For those rightfully pointing out that logic functions shouldn't be responsible for creating user messages, I didn't mean to imply the function generates the full text message, just somehow transmits the reason for the problem so that the UI could later parse that into a message)

The other option I suppose would be throw exceptions inside the function if it can't evaluate, then catch and interpret to user messages if desired. However, as stated the inability to evaluate typically does not signify a halt to the routine, and now I'd have to put a Try...Catch block around the function call everytime I use it.

Handle Events On The Dynamically Loaded User Control?

RaiseEvent Close(sender, e)
Debug.Print(String.Format("The control {{0}} was closed by {{1}}.", Me.Name, sender.ToString))

In the save button I have called the RaiseCloseEvent as follows:

RaiseCloseEvent(sender, e)

Now, how can I close the user control form? Any Idea? I have used VB.Net language.

Data Modelling Techniques To Handle Lots Of Data?

Apr 6, 2011

So I have a relatively small website with growing amounts of data - the fastest growing table is pageviews, as we do all our analytics ourselves. The website is made using VB.Net, SQL Server 2008 and jQuery. I am limited to .net 2.5.I currently handle all the data and validation using objects with a list of attributes. Each attribute is of a specific datatype and has a validation function when a new value is given to it. If the data does not validate then it won't even get as far as updating the database and feeds back an error to the user. Currently I have "Manager" classes and "Item" classes - Items are managed by a particular Manager class, for example Users are managed by the UserManager, so to get all the users I just have to call UserManager.Items. These Manager classes are stored in the cache and are created as needed - but once a Manager class is referenced it creates all of the Items within it. This is getting rather slow now, as the company is growing fast. It takes 2 - 3 seconds to load the first page (the page which makes most first-time requests to data) but I am not happy with this time. After that it is nearly instant.

Now the way I see it I have 3 options to speed the website up: Keep it as it is, but try to make it more efficient through other techniques;Change to creating all these objects on every page load, in the hope that it is simply so slow because I am using the cache to store a fair amount of data (about 10 MB or so at least);Forgetting using object oriented techniques and just use straight SQL queries and loop through records.

Handle A ConstraintException Thrown While User Enters Record # In BindingNavigatorPositionItem?

Jan 22, 2010

I'm using a bindingnavigator. My datasource has the column "key1" marked as unique = true. The user presses the "+" button on the screen. A blank form is presented as expected to allow entry for the new record. The user enters "A" in the "key1" field, "A" already exists in the dataset as all records have been returned by the fill command of the tableadapter, the user then, without attempting to click the save button, clicks in the "PositionItem" textbox in the bindingnavigator. They then enter a number (say "1" for instance to go to the first record in the bindingsource), when they press enter an unhandled exception of type ContraintException is thrown. The exception is expected since the Constraint is not met. But how can I handle this exception, or how to I reimplement the code to do the work of the "PositionItem"? I know how to override the "movenextitem", "movepreviousitem", etc.

Handle Errors Caused By Invalid User Input In A Program?

Mar 10, 2011

how do I handle the errors that may appear from the user of my program. For example, I have an triangle area program in wich I ask the user of the program to insert the length of the base and height of the triangle in a textbox. But what if he inserts a letter or something else, like a sign....my program will crash...

I know that one method would be to use On Error GoTo but I don't know how. If maybe you can direct me to some link or you could explain how do I handle errors, I would be grateful. Maybe you can even show me other ways to avoid errors from the user input.

This is my small program so far:

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Handles Button1.Click
Dim , Height, ARIA As Integer

VS 2008 Handle Saving User Control Settings On Form Close?

Dec 27, 2009

What is the correct way to handle saving user control settings on form close. I have a tabcontrol that a user can add tabpages during runtime. The user control has a few controls (listbox, combobox, textbox) How can I save the created tabpages and the data in each control in the usercontrol? Below is how I am calling my usercontrol

Code
Public Class TabPageEx
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.TabPage

[code]....

I seem to be a little lost as most documentation seems to suggest that I can not save usercontrol settings in the app.config. I have played around with the solution expl. settings tab without much success. But, then again I may be going about it all wrong. So, I am looking for a little direction on the best way to handle this on form close.
