.net - Initiate The Current Httpcontext When Accessing An Asp.net Library From A Service?
Jul 27, 2011
I have an asp.net project that's compiled on a server. On that same server I have a windows service that's running methods referenced from the asp.net .dll. Everything works fine except for when the httpcontext.current object needs to be accessed. I'm fairly certain that the cause of the .current being null is that it's referencing the shared library without an actual instance of the site running. In a previous version of the service I was able to find a workaround in asp.net by not using the context, however that is now a last resort as much of the architecture of the site has changed. Is there anyway to create an instance of the site and simulate a current httpcontext for the purposes of the service?

Im having a problem understanding if accessing httpcontext inside a shared function, without passing in the httpcontext as a parameter is thread safe?
Are the 2 functions in the util class equally thread safe?
Class foo
Sub main()
Dim qs1 = util.getQS(HttpContext.Current)

I was working on a scenario where I have to add header to the Response Header.
I added a Response Header like this:- HttpContext.Current.Response.AddHeader("key1", "value1")
After some functional flow I required to add value to same "key1": HttpContext.Current.Reponse.AddHeader("key1, "value2")
thus value in Response Headers look like this:- key1 : value1, value2
I want to avoid the value2 addition to the same keyword key1.
I tried:-
If HttpContext.Current.Response.Headers("key1") Then
HttpContext.Current.Reponse.AddHeader("key1, "value2")
EndIf
But I got the error: This operation requires IIS integrated pipeline mode at HttpContext.Current.Response.Headers("key1")
I have IIS6 running. This [URL] says that it doestn't works if its not IIS7

2003I've implemented Forms Authentication on one particular subfolder on one of my sites. My code works perfectly on my development machine, but there is a slight problem on the live server. If you browse to the admin subfolder, if you are not authenticated, you will be redirected to the login page. The Master Page footer also contains a link to the login page; when the user logs in, that link is supposed to change to a link to the admin page:
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Dim link As HtmlAnchor = FindControlIterative(Me, "Login")
If HttpContext.Current.Request.LogonUserIdentity.IsAuthenticated Then
[code]....
This works fine on my dev PC, but on the live server, IsAuthenticated() returns False, and thus the Login link is not replaced by the Admin link. However, if browse to the admin subfolder, I can access the content fine; there is no redirection to the login page.

When I downloaded my Visual Studio Express I also downloaded the MSDM Library (Express Edition) to have the extra resource. I just now got around to installing that. I was under the impression that this was extra content stored on your PC. I could not seem to find a way to access it from VS Express 2008 or find an exe to start it by itself. I searched the Internet and all I get is information about accessing the Online version of the MSDN Library. I do see an icon in VB Express that says MSDN Forums. Is this what I should be looking for or is there really local content I can access.. How does this work?

Basically I am creating a Windows Service as an 'updater' program to update all my software packages. Whats going to happen is every piece of my software that is installed in its program folder will have an Update.dll this DLL will be a library to do with the update of the software.
There will also be a database in the Updater program folder which will contain a list of all my installed software. So when the service starts it will open my 'database' which will load the paths to all my installed software to a string array. Each path in the string array will have a Update.dll in the folder.
What I need to do then is is in turn call a routine called StartUpdate() from each of those Update.dll which will then do all the work. So the service itself is fairly basic and doesn't really do much I just need to figure out how to access DLL's when I don't actually know what ones will be there while programming, Reason I am doing it this way is to support my future software programmes without having to update the updater.

If I have a custom windows service running on a server, is there anyway I can access the value of a property/variable within that service? For example, I would like to have a client vb program be able to "read" the value some variable from that service. A simple example would be the service would capture a boolean value of the success or failure of the last time it kicked off a process. I would then like to have a client windows app "connect" with the service and be able to read that boolean value.

i am building a WCF Service Library that has to check our CRM database. Unfortunately when i try to debug the service with the WCF Test Client i receive a "Failed to invoke the service" error. I have stripped down the service slowly adding things back in to help figure out what is causing the error. I found out that it is cause when i call a new instance of my CRM service object. Is there something that i need to do in order to fix this error and be able to step through the service to debug it??

I have the following function
Private Function GetMD5(ByVal file As String) As String
Dim md5 As MD5CryptoServiceProvider = New MD5CryptoServiceProvider
Dim f As FileStream = New FileStream(file, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.Read, 8192)
md5.ComputeHash(f)
[code]....
It works fine, but when working with very large files on the network my users sometimes panic.I'd like to add a progress bar that updates based on the progress of the hashing through the file. So, my choice are either to manually create the hashing process, which I believe will be much slower,or somehow tap in to the position value of the filestream and use that to update a progress bar.I'd be happy to tap into the events of the MD5CryptoServiceProvider if I could, but I don't see anything there.I have searched the net to try to find an example and have only found code that works by reading line by line from the filestream, not from it being passed to another control/service.

I developed a windows service project using vb.net and windows service is installed with logon account as admin's user name and password. Target of windows service is to read the pst file path location from windows registry for currently logged user by accessing the following registry key
"HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging SubsystemProfilesOutlook52a407cf2e436a4d8fe252d1d257465501f6700".
The problem is , windows service can able to read the admin pst file path location if admin is logged in windows. When other user logged in windows, service is not able to read currently logged user's pst file path location from registry because of windows service is configured with admin user name and password. so it always reads admin's pst file location.

I currently have a web application project that also includes web services within the same project. I currently have a requirement to call the web service asynchronously. Since, I haven't added the web service as a web reference within the same project, I tried to call the web service method using delegates and I see an exception "HttpContext is not available. This class can only be used in the context of an ASP.NET request" when I tried to access the Application property in my web service method call.
