3D Cube Ignores Timer?
Mar 10, 2011
Attached is a file that creates a 3D cube, I did not make this but found it here at this site.Playing around with it I found out how to, on pressing of any key change the distance of the camera, thus changing the shade of the cube.So if you held a key down it got darker and darker.I want this to happen, but on a timer. So i created a timer, set the interval to 1 and did the same exact code. Set the timer to true, and nothing happens. Ever. I tried doing messagebox.show to show me a message every tick, and that didn't work either. So I went and broke the timer class?
[Code]...
Now i made a new application file, because I use timers all the time and it works. I copy pasted the code, and added the directx stuff, and it ..breaks my timer to do nothing at all ever.. Even if it is unrelated to my cube.

I need to build a local .cub file for my Excel-using clients.
I have scrounged together some VB code but it fails :
ConnLocation = "LOCATION=C: est.cub;"
ConnDSN = "SOURCE_DSN=DSN=TEST;UID=test;PWD=pass;"
ConnCreateCube = _
"CREATECUBE=CREATE CUBE [TestCube] (" & _
"DIMENSION [account_code]);"
[Code]...
I have trimmed this down to the above code and am getting a mysterious OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error." when I try to run it.

I'm making this rubik's cube program, and I wanted to make a 3d animation of the cube doing the moves, and I figured the best option for that was using the XNA extension. However, doing that brings up a problem. I want to have lots of different options in the Mdi parent form that will interact with the moving 3d cube. The problem with this and using XNA is I can't use both the normal form and the XNA game in the same project. How would I go about having the 2 different projects interact? Just like a txt file or something?

Much to my disappointment I recently discovered that VB can not calculate the cube root (or any odd root) of a negative number even though it is a real answer.For instance if you tryMsgBox((-1)^(1/3))You should get -1 because -1*-1*-1 = -1. But no, VB will return NaN, not a number.Anyways, my problem is that I'm making a graph program and the user needs to be allowed to enter any formula they want and have it evaluated so the program can graph it. But if the user enters anything with x^(1/3) or like it, it will fail.So I was wondering if anyone knows of a way around this problem, such as an extension or patch or something that will fix the issue in Visual Basic. I haven't tried VB 2010 but does anyone know if they have they fixed it yet in that version?

My problem is when the file I am reading contains an accented character the streamreader simply ignores this character. So if the line I read in was a 10 bytes line, it now only writes back out a 9 byte line. This is a huge issue as the file I am working with has to be a fixed length. I know there is some encoding that can be done to make this work, but know very little about it. [Code]

I was unhappy with the kerning in one of the installed fonts on my system, so I re-defined the kerning in a font editor and installed the revised font (under a new name) on my system. When I use the new font in Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop, my new kerning works fine - but when I use Drawstring in a VB program, although the new font is used, the kerning instructions are ignored.Does anyone know if this a feature of the Graphics.Drawstring method, or am I failing to set a switch somewhere? If it's a feature, is there another method which kerns correctly?

We're converting a Classic ASP site to an ASP.NET site. One function was to upload a 'template' of data in CSV format for importing into the database. There were several different record types in there (the first field always indentifies the type of data).The task was to get the CSV into a DataTable so it could be validated (new project is to have MUCH better validation rules)
The code seemed pretty straightforward - watered down (taking out comments, Try/Catch, etc) it is as follows:
Dim da As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter
Dim cn As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & strDirectory & ";" & "Extended Properties=""Text;HDR=No;FMT=Delimited;""")
[code]....
The DataTable (dtData) is populated, but only starting with the second line of the CSV file DESPITE the fact that "HDR=No" is in the connection string.

The application sits on a virtual environment and when I remote in and run the application, it connects to the remote database. However, when I remote in with a service account and double click the same .exe, it tries to connect to the local host database and ignores the app.config. The code is the same, only the login name I use is different. The login I use is part of the local admin group. Any ideas?

Here is the final code that worked for me. This uses WNetAddConnection2 to establish a connection first, before using DirectoryEntry.
Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices
Imports System.Net
Imports System.DirectoryServices
Imports System.IO
[Code]...
So I moved the code to an ASP.Net web app, which is impersonating a service account through the Impersonate section of web.config. The account I am impersonating does not have admin rights on any of the workstations so I put in a username/password into the constructor for the computer entry like so:
Dim deComputer As New DirectoryEntry("WinNT://" + Computername + ",computer", username, password).The username is that of a domain account which has local admin rights on every workstation. If I look at the Username property of the resulting deComputer object I can see that the username matches what I entered.Also if I enter in an invalid password it throws an error, so it is authenticating in some fashion.
However if I now try and add or remove a user from a remote workstation I get a general access denied error. If I add the service account that ASP.Net is using as a local admin on that workstation it will add and remove no problem.So next I tried using the LogonAPI (advapi32.dll ->LogonUser call) to login as the user account that is a local admin on all workstations, impersonated the resulting WindowsIdentitiy and tried running just the original deComputer instantiation. When I do this every property, excepty Path, returns an OLE exception..

I want to include an average in a column where the average ignores zero values in a report cell where the column may have
17

0
[code].....
I want 16, not 11 so (17 + 19 + 12 + 13 + 19) / 5 not (17 + 19 + 0 + 0 + 12 + 13 + 19) / 7 Something like this if it would work.
=SUM(Fields!fieldname.Value) / Count(iif(Fields!count_cycle_per_hour.Value >= 0,Fields!fieldname.Value,0))
Essentially just average everything in the column NOT a zero?

I need an accurate timer to interface a Windows application to a piece of lab equipment.I used System.Timers.Timer() to create a timer that ticks every 10 msec, but this clock runs slow. For example 1000 ticks with an interval of 10 msec should take 10 wall-clock seconds, but it actually takes more like 20 wall-clock sec (on my PC). I am guessing this is because System.Timers.Timer() is an interval timer that is reset every time it elapses. Since it will always take some time between when the timer elapses and when it is reset (to another 10msec) the clock will run slow. This probably fine if the interval is large (seconds or minutes) but unacceptable for very short intervals.Is there a function on Windows that will trigger a procedure every time the system clock crosses a 10 msec (or whatever) boundary?
UPDATE: System.Timers.Timer() is extremely inaccurate for small intervals.I wrote a simple program that counted 10 seconds several ways:
Interval=1, Count=10000, Run time = 160 sec, msec per interval=16
Interval=10, Count=1000, Run time = 16 sec, msec per interval=15
Interval=100, Count=100, Run time = 11 sec, msec per interval=110
Interval=1000, Count=10, Run time = 10 sec, msec per interval=1000
It seems like System.Timers.Timer() cannot tick faster that about 15 msec, regardless of the interval setting.Note that none of these tests seemed to use any measurable CPU time, so the limit is not the CPU, just a .net limitation (bug?)For now I think I can live with an inaccurate timer that triggers a routine every 15 msec or so and the routine gets an accurate system time. Kinda strange, but...I also found a shareware product ZylTimer.NET that claims to be a much more accurate .net timer (resolution of 1-2 msec). This may be what I need. If there is one product there are likely others.

I have a timer on a page in ASP.NET.
After a certain period of time elapses, I want to disable the timer.
I want to put a static variable in the timers tick event that will track how many seconds have elapsed.
My question is, will this work?
If user X and Y are viewing the page will they both have separate local static variables?
What is the best method of shutting down an ASP.NET timer after a certain elapsed time?

I have a windows application that need to process som quite time consuming jobs. In my first try i did all processing under
the form thread. The result was bad response and update of the form due to the heavy jobs.To get around the problem with bad response from the form i created a new class "processing" where i put all the data processing. Then i instanciated a background worker where i in the "doWork" sub created a new instance of "processing".The "processing" class creates a timer from system.timer, and the timer drives the processing.On the Timer event Elapsed the timer starts a new thread from the thread pool.
My problem is now when i want to asynchronously close the background worker (with the corresponding function call what ever it is called ...) there is still a timer thread out there that causes exceptions for me.
1. How can i close my background worker and at the same time have the timer to be stopped?
2. Is there a way to synchronize the timer event so that the timer executes from the background worker thread?
3. Is there a better approach for me to adapt?

I want to create an array of timer in vb.net. My problem is that how will i raise the tick event for a particular timer, say mytimer(x).tick and inside the tick event there is also a button, say mybutton(x) which changes location every interval. for example:
public class blah
dim mybuttons(20) as button
dim mytimer(20) as timer
private sub form_load(....) handles me.load
for x as integer = 0 to 20
[Code]...
i dont know what to do next, all i want is to pass the button mybuttons(x) to mytimer(x) tick event, in which their index number are the same. i want to create one timer per button. how to do that? please help me and post example codes. i've researched the net but i cant understand passing variables, addhandlers, etc. i'm just new to programming object oriented.

As the title says I have a form with many databound textboxes. some of these boxes have data in them and some are empty. I need to add them altogether, so far all of the conversion methods I have tried err out when they run into an empty string, except Val, but then Val won't handle the string with a $ in it. I've tried decimal.parse which handles the $ but not the empty string. So I seem to be in circle that I can't get out of.

I recently switched my code from using the windows.forms.timer to the systems.timer.timer and it has resulted in a multithreading error. I'm using the timer to trigger just one event so multithreading shouldn't be an issue. To give more detail I have implemented the timer at follows:
At the top of the class I have: Private Shared timr1sec As System.Timers.Timer
When the program loads (Private Sub Test_load):
timr1sec = New System.Timers.Timer(1000)
AddHandler timr1sec.Elapsed, AddressOf OnTimedEvent
In OnTimedEvent I call several subroutines, and write some data to the screen using a ListView object.VisualExpress throws the multithreading error on the last line of this code, which is in OnTimedEvent
