How do i make a program that can compress files, just like programs like winrar do? Every time i try via something as simple as text editor changing something, then changing it back, then it wont work anymore. Any suggestions on how i can make one of these kinds of compression programs?
I'm currently working on a utility software, file compression, with VB.Net. And using an open source library to compress and decompress files - DotNetZip - and already running.
My friend told to make it unique and not traditional, that I make the output compressed files cannot be opened with other compression software. Now my question is... is it possible that way? Using an open source library which the output format is ".zip"?
I first thought that changing the file extension of the compressed file to unknown format so it can't be opened when you try to decompress it, unfortunately, using the "Open With..." function of windows it could still be decompressed.
Is it really possible? OR what other features can I add that WinZIP doesnt have yet? I compared my work to WinZip since the same output is ".zip".
I'm wanting to make a program to rip dvd's but more importantly to store them so the user can watch them when they want. To keep the cpu's memory down I figured I can compress the dvds when the person just has them sitting there and then decompress them when the user wants to play them. I've kinda looked into gzipstream, but would that really work? Should I take a different route?
I know this is out there and probably illogical but I was wondering if it was possible to take multiple picture files and compact them into one file.... and then retrieve them from the program later? Way to combine any amount of image files into one file
Module Module1 Sub combine() Dim img1 As New Bitmap("i1.jpg")
I'm willing to create a program that will determine the size of a file imported in OpenFileDialog After a RAR Compression. I'm not sure what's the ratio of the rar compression,
I'm trying to copy multiple excel source files into one excel file. My current code is working only for 3 source files..If more than 3 files are there, it doesn't copy the data but creates blank work sheet in the output excel file. Lets say I have a source folder with 5 excel files. Each workbook contains one worksheet with data. It copies upto 3 worksheets along with data into output excel file.
Lets say excel1 contains A as work sheet, excel2 contains B as work sheet ,excel3 contains C as work sheet ,excel4 contains D as work sheet ,excel5 contains E as work sheet .Now my output excel file should look like..OutputExcel with A, B, C, D, E along with respective data. But my current code is giving output as A,B,C worksheets along with respective data but its creating blank sheet1,sheet2 in place of D & E.
[Code] each file is about 30 kilobytes in size, and they contain raw hardware statistical information in a comma-deliminted format. I want to do the following with these files as my end-result.
NEWFILE.CVS contains the contents in this format:
metric_group_001 metric_group_002 metric_group_003 metric_group_004 etc.
I don't want APPEND, I want to concatenate the contents of these files into one large master file. I am able to do this MANUALLY, but I need to have a DYNAMIC method of doing this because of the number of files will change depending on the test we are doing with the hardware. This is the code I am using to do this process manually and it does work, but I need a DYNAMIC method in place. [Code]
I am trying to upload 2 large files to a ftp server by uploading as one file to a location. I have it working if the files are small but it crashes with large files.
For i As Integer = 0 To filelist.Count() - 1 Dim fRequest As FtpWebRequest = WebRequest.Create(ftpPath & "/Reports/" & filelist.Item(i)) fRequest.Credentials = New NetworkCredential(username, psswd)
I have a tab-based application that handles multiple documents. It is designed such that the user cannot run multiple instances of application. Furthermore, the user can double-click on a document file, and the application will launch itself and open it.[code]...
I have a multiple text files that I need to merge. but I need to compare the reference number before merge it.[code]What will be the fastest way to deal it read line by line to compare. the text file consist of thousand of line
I'm trying to copy multiple files from a directory, put them into an array, then copy just the 30 newest files(I haven't coded the 30 newest loop yet). I added a list box to the following code just to ensure the all the files are storing into the array properly... they are. When it try's to copy, it renames the first file to .log, then tells me that the .log file already exist. How do I get it to copy and keep the source file name in the destination folder Eventually I'll loop this and grab only 30 of the files.
Here's the code I'm playing with: Private Sub transferButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles transferButton.Click
I've made a rudimentary program that combines multiple files into one single file. Currently if I combine two .csv files together the output comes out correctly for what I need, which is a coma delimited file. When I try to combine two .csv files into a .xls file it doesn't format correctly (I get all the data separated by commas, but thrown into one column in the .xls file). For this reason I believe I need to add a delimiter.I'll post my code below.
Im trying to read a usb in a port using a file explorer. does anyone know how i can use the file explorer form to browse files in multiple drives that i specify? and how can i read and browse a usb port in vb.net (i.e. Write files to a usb or create an app directory on the usb.)
I have a form with a treeview and a listview. The treeview lists the folders on your system and listview shows the files in the selected folder, similar to windows explorer. I have a delete button for deleting files.
[code]...
When deleting multiple files a confirmation message box pops up for each file selected. I would like to have it come up once and ask 'Are you sure you want to send these 'x' files to the recycle bin?' where 'x' is the number of files selected.
I created a Right-Click Menu option for files. When the user clicks the menu option it will copy all of the file paths to the clipboard. The following function I have will retrieve all of the filepaths to the clipboard. The problem lies in adding the filepaths to the listbox. If I turn single instance application off the result is multiple instance of the application for each filepath. Say for example I selected 2 files and clicked my right-click menu, I wind up with 2 instance of my exe with each file path added to the listbox, 1 in one listbox, the other file path in the second instance listbox.
Public Sub getthepath() Try Dim thefilepath As String
[code]....
Is there a way to loop through each file path from the clipboard and add them to the listbox through a loop?Several times I have tried different ideas I had that I thought would do it and I got odd results but never a good result.

I have a website that has highly granulised access and hence requires many web.config files. The problem is I would like to trim the menu so that only certain users will have access to certain folders. I have enabled trimming and setup roles in the sitemap, however when I access the page the menu is not show, as I am authorized to view the default page which is not in a subfolder. When I type the url of a page in sub folder's I have access.
How should I handle this:
A site map for each web.config file - don't know how this will work Removing the sub web.config file to only use a single one
I'm developing an application to help law enforcement retrieve and analyze logs and other files left by the use of Pidgin (a multi-protocol messenger client). Right now I'm nearly done, but I want to add the ability to search chat logs for user-defined words or phrases and I don't even know where to begin.
Chat logs are stored as html documents in a folder/sub-folder/sub-folder/sub-folder fashion, where each sub-folder can have dozens of sub-folders inside of it, and the final sub-folder can have dozens if not hundreds of chat logs. If anybody could point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful.
(Also, this is the first program I've written since about 2005, and I'm essentially teaching myself VB as I go. If you'd like to see what I've cobbled together so far, you can find the program here.)
I need to write a small program to get a certain task done, but I have zero experience in manipulating text files. how to write the following program:The program should take all the text files in a folder, and add the data in a csv text file, with columns:

I'm trying to compress a file in .NET, but having some trouble. The zip file is created, but it's only 1KB and no files are within the zip file. Basically, it's not working for some reason and I'm not sure why.

We need to conditionally disable GZIP compression if user's browser is IE6 (it hangs browser for 5min) in few pages of larger site. Server is IIS7 and has compression for static content turned on - want that compression left working if user agent is not Mozilla/4.0. ASPX code sample anyone? Alternatively, code to conditionally redirect to the same page on another site (could create another virtual site with compression disabled) but need to pass all parameters (GET/POST).
I want to check Disk compressed(compress drive to save disk space) property. I have following code to check it. But it always return false. whether it is compress or not.

I have a WCF Windows service that provides data to 250+ PDAs via compressed datasets and was looking to redevelop both the service and the mobile application to use Entity Framework 4.x models. In order to keep performance acceptable when sending/receiving data on the PDA I need to keep the data size as small as possible and was wondering if its possible to compress a IEnumerable from the WCF windows service? From previous experience with the datasets I got a 80%+/- compression rate and even decompressing the data on the PDA achieved an overal 50% performance importment so retaining similar levels of performance is critical. Could I use a binary serializer and then compress the stream?
