Cancel Current BackgroundWorker Task Before Running Again?

Aug 1, 2010

I'm using a BackgroundWorker to perform some analysis on a separate thread. The BackgroundWorker is called when a user clicks a CheckBox.

I need to provide for the user clicking the CheckBox, starting the BackgroundWorker task, and then changing their mind and clicking the CheckBox again.I simply want to cancel the currently running task and set the analysis off again. Currently I have the following method:

Public Sub UpdateParkStatusAsync()
Try
'Debug output.
Console.WriteLine("UC_Map_ViewModel.UpdateParkStatus called.")

Signal (NOT Cancel) A BackgroundWorker?

Mar 7, 2011

Is it possible to send information to a BackgroundWorker thread while it is running? Here is my scenario: Parent thread calls background thread to send a data request to a database. If it's a big complicated query it can take a while for the db to respond, so putting the db request on the background worker thread is great. My app can do other stuff while the one thread waits for the db.

Now, db responds with beginning of data. I want my background thread to report back meta data about the result set to the parent thread. No problem there, I can use a custom user state object and the ReportProgress method. But now, how to I send a signal from the parent thread back to the worker thread? I want the background thread to wait while the parent thread does something, and then tells the worker thread to keep going or quit. I know how to cancel a background thread, but I want the parent to be able tell the child some information other than "cancel". Here's one way to think about it:

Cancel A Task Which Is Not Performing Any Loop-based Statements?

Mar 27, 2012

I have an asynchronous task that is executing a function. The function does not contains any looping statements, but instead it is executing series of sql commands on sql server. Now, i have a button on my window that can cancel these sql operations. In other words, cancel the whole asynchronous task.

I know that this technique will require CancellationTokenSource and CancellationToken to cancel the task, but i've seen many examples on the internet and all of them are showing that the function that task is executing contains loop statements in which they are checking for IsCancellationRequested boolean property. But in my case, it is not so. My function does not have any loop statements in which i can do a check on this boolean property.

Wpf - Repeating BackgroundWorker Task Using DistpatcherTimer?

Oct 28, 2011

I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach this. I have a BackgroundWorker which is being used to make a socket connection on a timer.

[Code]...

edit: thinking about it. It would be good if I could somehow build a watchdog into it, so if the BackgroundWorker thread is found to be running for more than 2 seconds, it's terminated as this would indicate the thread has been held up by the tcp connection.

Backgroundworker - Multiple Background Workers - Only Last Task Completes?

Jan 26, 2011

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work. If I step through the code in debugger it all works great. My problem is if I just run it, only the last task responds. I'm guessing I am overwriting the background working or something. I am sure I am doing a few things wrong but my code is now messy as I tried many way while searching. I know of the threadpool and .Net 4.0 tasks but having a hard time getting to do what I need.

Basicly I am writing a program (trying more likely) that takes a list of computers and pings then, then checks their uptime and reports back. This works fine in the UI thread (Obviously that locks up my screen). I can have the background worker just do this, but then it does each computer 1 by one, and while the screen is responsive it still takes a long time.

So my answer was to have a for loop for each server launching a new background worker thread. My solution does not work.I have seen other threads that I could do it, but I need to use with events to call code to update to UI when each is done.

What is the most simple way to do this?

Here is my code. Most is just copy paste + modify till I get it working right.

So In the main class I have the testworker.

(I tried using Testworker() but it said I could not do that WithEvents)

When I click the button the list loads.

Private WithEvents TestWorker As System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

[Code]...

BackgroundWorker Get Values From UI Thread While It Is Running?

Jan 2, 2012

I am using the BackgroundWorker to do the heavy tasks so the UI thread doesn't get blocked. While the BackgroundWorker can send values to the UI thread using the progress-scheme, how can the BackgroundWorker get some values FROM the UI thread?

Either by asking it or simply by the UI thread sending some values to the BackgroundWorker?

Just accessing a variable of the UI thread like UIForm.x within the BackgroundWorker does not work, it does not seem to have access to the UI variables?

After the user has selected all needed information and click continue, a form with a progressbar (Marquee) should appear. The application will then perform different tasks needed for the schedule to be completed. When all needed tasks are finished i want the progressForm to close and the main form will show you a summary of the newly created task.

I run the tasks in the main thread and assign a backgroundworker for the porgressFrom. i have have also tried to run the taks in a backgroundworker.

C# - Use For A SOA Solution To Exec A Long Running Task?

Jan 30, 2012

I am developing a solution in .Net utilising the VMWare Web Service API to create new isolated virtualised development environments. The front end will be web based. Requestors input details for the specific environment which will be persisted to SQL. So I need to write an engine of some sort to pull the data from SQL and work on the long running task of creating resource pools, switch port groups and cloning existing VM templates etc. As work progresses, events will be raised to write logs and update info back to SQL. This allows requestors to pull data back into a webpage to see how it's progressing or if it's completed.

The thing I am struggling with is how to engineer the engine which will exec the long running task of creating the environment. I cannot write a windows service (which I would like) as we work in a very secure environment and it's not possible (group policy etc). I could write a web service to execute the tasks, extending the httpRuntime executionTimeout to allow the task to complete. But I'm keen to hear what you guys think may be a better solution to use (based on .Net 3.5). The solution needs to be service oriented as we may be using it on other projects within our org. What about WWF, WCF? I have not used any of the newer technologies available since .Net 2.0 as we've only just been approved to move up from .Net 2.0.

ClickOnce Application Not Running As A Scheduled Task

Jul 27, 2009

I am currently attempting to support a ClickOnce application that i did not write. This application is running from a scheduled task. The scheduled task points to a .application file. This had been running happily untill today when it stopped. The only thing that has changed is that the application has been executed manually by a developer by double clicking on the .application file. Since then each time the scheduled task is scheduled to run the application doesn't appear to execute. The task reports no error and the error code (0x0) given indicates it ran and completed ok.

I am not familiar with ClickOnce and am not sure when implication clicking the .application file would have had or why it has stopped running as a scheduled task. It appears to me that everything else has remained the same (i have checked it is running under the correct account etc).

VS 2010 Backgroundworker Thread Running Faster Than The UI Can Update Progress?

Nov 15, 2011

I have a VB.NET 2010 app that uses a backgroundworker to process MS Word docs. All of the code does what it is supposed to do, except when my code calls ReportProgress(). The UI cannot process the ProgressChanged event fast enough before the values in the class that are passed are changed. I know this because I inserted a System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(100) line after each ReportProgress() call which allows time for the UI to make the updates properly. I guess I am looking for a better solution thanThread.Sleep(100) since this adds to the amount of time it takes to process all of the files. Here are some snippets of code that I am using:

How to enque the additional 2 items to the 'TestCollection' so that additional two tasks will also run in paralell. Finally 5 tasks should run in paralell without stopping the running task. If a post answers your question,
