Cancel Dialog - Handling Enter Keypress
Apr 4, 2011
I'm building a Dialog in Winforms. It's got the two OK and Cancel buttons that are there when you create it, which is what I want. In this dialog I also have a TextBox and a Sub (coding in VB.NET) that handles its KeyPress event. I need stuff to happen when the 'Enter' key is pressed. Now, I've done such KeyPress handling times and times again. This situation, however, is different, because as soon as 'Enter' key is pressed, the dialog automatically assumes you're pressing the 'OK' button, returns a result and closes.
In both the Designer and the actual form when running the application, the OK button is highlight, which means is has some kind of a focus (for the lack of a better term) at all times. How can I disable this feature of a dialog? When I debug my code, pressing enter does not even get to the sub handling the KeyPress event. It simply closes the dialog and returns the result, therefore I can't really step through the code and see what happens behind the scenes. To restate the question, how can I disable this functionality?

I have a Dialog that is basically a confirmation dialog on some SQL statements. After the dialog I have an if statement: If frmRelease.ShowDialog() <> Windows.Forms.DialogResult.Cancel then.My buttons are set as DialogResult = OK and DialogResult = Cancel respectively on the dialog form.
For some reason, sometimes my button set to DialogResult = OK is returning me a DialogResult.Cancel, and causing me to skip a block of cleanup code.

Basically I need to handle a keypress or keydown/keyup event on a form, specifically for the Up, Down, Left, Right arrows. Using the below, nothing moves. However, if I change (Keys.Left) to (Keys.A) then a capital A will move the object.
vbnet
Private Sub Form1_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles Me.KeyPress
If e.KeyChar = Microsoft.VisualBasic.ChrW(Keys.Left) Then
'Note that 'man' is a PictureBox.
man.Location = New Point(man.Location.X - 5, man.Location.Y)
End If
End Sub

I am new to VB but I want to find this out. For example there are two objects in my form and when I press W,A,S,D then Object1 should move Up, Left, Down and Right respectively. Object2 moves when I press the arrow keys. How do I make them move together and also separately depending on whether the key is pressed.

How can i catch the return of say an OpenDialog/Save Dialog/Color dialog?
For example i want to know if the OK or Cancel button was pressed and use a goto statement that jumps to a section of code that exits the sub to avoid an error (especially in the case of pressing cancel when using an open dialog).

I have created my own version of word pad. When I click save on the file drop down, the save dialog box pops up, but if I click cancel then my program crashes. I am not sure what I need to do so that if I hit cancel, it will just return to my program.[code]

The following code works fine, however if the user wants to cancel out from the openfiledialog they cant they are stuck in a loop. A loop I created in case they selected the wrong type of data file they could choose again. [Code]. I really need some help seeing where and how to let the user cancel out without the program continuing. I tried some dialog.dispose code but everywhere i seem to put it it generates an error somewhere.

I am trying to add to items to a combobox by using the "enter" key. It does work when I add the first item, but if I manually clear the box and add another items it does not get added to the list.
(1) I click in the combobox and type "hello" and press the "enter" key
(2) I click on the dropdown arrow and see that "hello" is in the list
(3) I select "hello" in the box and erase it, item is still in the list
(4) I type "goodbye" in the box and press the "enter" key
(5) "hello" is still in the list but "goodbye" is not
Here is the code:
Private Sub CopyrightCombo_Keypress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles CopyrightCombo.KeyPress
If e.KeyChar = Microsoft.VisualBasic.ChrW(Keys.Return) Then
[code].....
if I comment the if/end if line and type "hello" the items added to the combobox list are: "h", "he", "hel", "hell", "hello" wich makes sens since the add items is run on every keypress? I know that my commands for adding items is good, I know that my keypress event is handled properly but not when I specify using the "enter" key.

I am using the Event Handler below for the Enter Key Press Event, it is running when ever any of the keys is pressed. This is not so much a problem when the app. is running, unnecessary yes. It is giving me problems when ever I am Debugging using Breakpoints. How can I change the Handler so it only runs when the Enter Key is Pressed, doing away with the If statement?
Private Sub Form1_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles Me.KeyPress
If e.KeyChar = Chr(Keys.Enter) Then
'Different code blocks will run here depending on what
'TextBox or Label is selected.
End If
End Sub

I have been out of VB since VB 6, but am back into it to write a basic app. I have created a listbox and am able to add data to it from a textbox via a command button. However, I want to give the user the option to simply press the enter key after they have entered the info the textbox, instead of clicking on the command button. I tried calling the function the command button is using from the "ENTER" event on the textbox, but all that does is execute the function when I click on the textbox? I'm sure this is very simple. What am I missing?

AddHandler Form1.KeyDown, AddressOf EnterkeyHandler 'Would like to understand this better

I have a problem when it comes to faxing html. Im currently using FAXCOMEXLib because I'm sending to a remote fax server. Sending html files causes the function ConnectedSubmit to display a print dialog box before sending the fax. The application hangs when you try to cancel the print dialog box, it seems like the ConnectedSubmit function does not return to previous line where it was called.

I have a Telerik Radgrid containing all the valid usernames and passwords that can be used to unlock functionnalities on my web page. The password is encrypted, so you have to click the row to decrypt and show the actual password. All usernames and passwords can be changed by an admin When the admin presses [ENTER] to submit the new username/password combination (instead of pressing the submit button), the new combination is actually submitted (which is fine).

I have code that pops up a dialog box and waits for either the OK or Cancel button to be clicked. I am trying to figure out how to get and use the repsonse from dialog box. If the user clicks OK, I want the rest of the code to execute normally (it already does this by default). If the user clicks Cancel, I want to skip the rest of the code. I was assuming OK would return TRUE and Cancel would return FALSE, but that apparently is not correct. How do I figure out whether OK or Cancel was clicked?
If Not MapCheck() = "" Then
DiaError.TextBoxErr.Text = MapCheck()
If Not DiaError.ShowDialog() Then 'show dialog box and evaluate output
GoTo breakme 'if Cancel is clicked

I have two issues. The first is that I want to make a textbox scrolling similar to how credits scroll. I don't want it to move on the form, just to scrolling the text down a line/pixel. I thought I could do it with the "Lines" element, but I'm not exactly sure how to execute it.
The other problem is with my flash screen. Right now I have it set so when a button is click, it goes onto the main form. I don't want to use the button but rather have it so if Enter is pressed at any time, it'll go to the main form. All the solutions I've tried to use involve the "e.Keycode" code, but for some reason its unavailable.

I have a keyboard handler for my combobox1:
Private sub Combobox1_Keydown(....yaddda) handles combobox1.keydown
if e.keycode = keys.enter then
msgbox(combobox1.text)
end if
end sub
this always displays an empty message box,I need the value of the combo box before the enter was pressed, apparently the enter key empties the combobox1.text.

I'm designing a Windows Forms Application, and there is a dialog that should NOT exit when the enter key is pressed, instead it has to validate data first, in case enter was pressed after changing the text of a ComboBox. I've tried by telling it what to do on KeyPress event of the ComboBox if e is the Enter key:
[Code]...
But no success so far. When the Enter key is pressed, even with the ComboBox on focus, the whole dialog is closed, returning to the previous form. The validation is NOT done at all, and it has to be done before exiting. In fact, I don't even want to exit on the form's enter KeyPress, the only purpose of the enter key on the whole dialog is to validate the ComboBox (but only when in focus, for the sake of an intuitive UI). I've also tried appending the validation to the KeyPress event of the whole dialog's form, if the key is Enter. NO SUCCESS! It's like my code wasn't there at all.

I have a simple desktop application that uses a .NET setup project (.msi file) to perform the installation. On the first installation, everything proceeds in a timely fashion with good feedback for the user. The problem occurs when the user is installing the latest version of the application over an old version on their machine. There is an unacceptably long delay of about 60 to 180 seconds from the time the installer's 'Welcome' dialog [It's not the Welcome dialog, I've removed that from the Start section of the setup project and replaced it with a CheckBox dialog to ask if the user wants a shortcut on the desktop] disappears until the 'Progress' dialog appears. The user sees minute(s) of blank screen and thinks the install has stopped or failed.
In the setup project properties, I've got the 'DetectNewerInstalledVersion' and 'RemovePreviousVersions' properties set to true. So, I believe that while nothing appears to be happening, the installer is actually removing the old version. The 'Progress' dialog does not appear until the new version begins installation.I've been trying to either:
a) Get the 'Progress' dialog to display immediately after the 'Install Icon' dialog disappears
b) Show another dialog while the Uninstall is running to let the user know that the setup is still running and everything is OK.
I have been unsuccessful with both methods. I'm using VS 2008 SP1?
