Change Registry Settings To Open Eml File From Web Pages In Outlook Express?
Jul 10, 2008
I couldn't find an appropriate forum which would suit the type of problem I am facing so I am putting it here.I needed to create an intranet web application that has pages with hyperlinks to eml files. The eml files as is known are email files in MIME format which outlook express can open. However what I found was if eml files are on your machine, it opens in outlook express but when opened as an hyperlink, it opens in Internet Explorer (IE) as an mhtml file. And any attachments that may be in the eml file are not displayed at all!I didn't understand why IE has to poke inbetween. After searching the net, I came across a solution that required changes in the Registry of the client machine. The change is to be made to the node HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMIMEDatabaseContent Typemessage/rfc822.The following is a REG file that can be imported for this change.[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMIMEDatabaseContent ypemessage/rfc822]"extension"=".eml""CLSID"=""However after this change, though eml files opened in Outlook express, MHT files stopped opening in IE.Then I simply deleted the rfc822 node and to my surprise, MHT files opened in IE and eml files opened in outlook express and everything was fine!!But I don't want to use this sledge hammer solution. I want to know what this registry key is for and how can I set it to achieve what I want . i.e. open eml files from web pages in outlook express without affecting other file types

I work for a somewhat large company. There are about 160 Windows XP Pro users. We are still using Microsoft Office 2000 for the most part.We have upgraded some users to Office 2003. We are not using Microsoft Exchange.I have to export every users' Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2003 Contacts into an Excel or CSV file every 6 months as a way of backing the Outlook Address Contacts.Currently I am doing this by physically going to every pc and manually exporting the contacts. This is a large pain.I am trying to find out if I can use or create a Visual Basic 2008 Express program or script that will export the contacts from Outlook and save it as an Excel or CSV file. The name of the file should be the same as the computers net name.It should be saved in the same location, on the network, each time.I am new to programming and new to VB 2008 Express.I do not know or have any code to start with.

We have a VBScript that launches an Access app that connects via ODBC to SQL Server - wouldn't you know the server name is changing.
Is it possible to use VBScript to modify the ODBC information in the registry to point to the new server? Basically changing one specific value for one specific key. Am I better off deleteing the ODBC key and readding it from scratch?

I'm working on an application that takes certain outlook email messages, saved as text files, and loads data from them into a database. It would be better if I could read the messages from the inbox directly into my app without the user having to save them as text files. I've searched the web and every example I find is from 2003 or earlier and is using VB6. I'd like to read both Outlook and Outlook Express Inboxes. Can someone either provide me with the code to do this or a good "recent" link with a tutorial?

I have a program that can save to a .txt file. The issue is I need it to be done in a tab delimited way.Basically:
TextHere<Tab>TextHere<Tab>TextHere<NextLine>
TextHere<Tab>TextHere<Tab>TextHere<NextLine>
I have this so far, but all it does is put the TextBox1.Text next to TextBox2.Text
Code:
SaveFileDialog1.Filter = "Text files (*.txt)|*.txt|All files (*.*)|*.*"
Dim FileWriter As StreamWriter
Dim results As DialogResult

I'm trying to create an app to launch at start up that will ask you what applications you want launching, or if you want all your favorite app's to start up etc. But before I go any further, I think its crucial to know how to save settings that a user has entered (such as program location and name in this case) so that he/she doesn't have to enter them every time at start up.
So far I have just made this, can anyone tell me how I would get it to save the settings entered?
Code:
Option Explicit On
Module Module1
Dim name As String
[Code]......

I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..

My boss has given me an asp.net web application that was done by his former employee. Now my boss has no contact with that employee. He wants me to make some changes in that web application. I went through the application. There is no documentation present for that application . Its a huge application. It contains many directories. I think it was a team work. It has many asp pages, aspx pages, jsp pages, xml pages, css pages, etc... How to understand other person or team's website or web application that was written in asp or asp.net and vb or vb.net?

is there a way in vb.net to open microsoft outlook without knowing the file path exactly? different versions of outlook use different file locations, then you have to worry about the program files and program files(x86). is there a way to just launch outlook using the system.diagnostics.process.start("..") without the file path?
i dont want to have to test folders:
If Folder_Exists("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12") Then
If Folder_Exists("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice11") Then

I've gone through about 16 hours and two packs of cigarettes trying to figure this out. First a little background. I was using 6.0 up until 2004 when I went to prison. I'm out now, and trying to relearn the trade, using VS 2005. I'm currently porting some 6.0 code from another project, SpyCast Webcam Studio, into VB 8.0. It's disheartening, to say the least. None of the old built-in subs/functions work anymore, so I have to scour the forums to relearn each and every function. The section I'm doing now takes a snapshot from the webcam (Video API --> PictureBox --> Save as Jpeg), then upens the file to upload it to the server via HTTP POST. I've been using this code in SpyCast for years with no trouble, but I spent many hours trying to piece together the right code to open the binary file to read its contents. I pieced together two methods I found around the forums, one using FileStream() though the code I found wasn't for binary files, even though it said it was, so that code doesn't really work. Method two uses Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileOpen() and works better.
Here's the kicker. By the time I run through the rest of the rigamarole of uploading the file, by the time I read it on the webserver, it's *slightly* corrupted. It's a valid Jpeg, no errors, but the picture looks like when I use to watch the Playboy Channel when I was a kid scrambled with weird colors and whatnot. [code] Each "chunk" is basically one "line" of the file. It looks like a single LineInput() return is the text between two carriage returns. Am I correct? I tested this with a flat text file, and it looks true. However, That one input line returns the text or data with the carriage returns *stripped*! ***?!? =( Fine, I have no problem adding my own vbCrLf to each LineInput(), if I were opening text. but this's binary. A character could be Chr(10) or Chr(13), both of which are removed from the original file contents. So I could very well need to use something other than LineInput(), but I haven't found any other examples on the web using this method.

code snippet that would allow a progress bar to track the input of a text file? Normally I would not bother with this, but the text files are > 10,000 lines long, which is noticable even on a fast machine. The number of lines is variable, so I would assume that one would not use a fixed value to calculate when the progress bar goes 100%.
