I have created a Outlook 2007 AddIn project with a Setup project.The settings for a databae connection are in the registry.Now I want to create a config file outside the msi so the settings for the database connection can be changed before the addin is installed.It is no problem if the settings stay in the config file instead of the registry.I have googled around but found no solution yet.
View 2 RepliesI have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.

The eml files as is known are email files in MIME format which outlook express can open. However what I found was if eml files are on your machine, it opens in outlook express but when opened as an hyperlink, it opens in Internet Explorer (IE) as an mhtml file. And any attachments that may be in the eml file are not displayed at all!I didn't understand why IE has to poke inbetween. After searching the net, I came across a solution that required changes in the Registry of the client machine.The change is to be made to the node HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMIMEDatabaseContent Typemessage/rfc822.The following is a REG file that can be imported for this change.[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMIMEDatabaseContent ypemessage/rfc822]"extension"=".eml""CLSID"=""However after this change, though eml files opened in Outlook express, MHT files stopped opening in IE.Then I simply deleted the rfc822 node and to my surprise, MHT files opened in IE and eml files opened in outlook express and everything was fine!!But I don't want to use this sledge hammer solution. I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.
I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.
Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?
I was wondering if it is possible to change the Proxy settings("Automatically Detect Settings") in IE without making the change to the registry. I wasn't sure if the Hive is similar in all operating systems, So I figured there has to be an API to make the change, also without having the restart the IE or the computer for that matter.

When I save settings for an application using My.Settings.Save it saves it in %AppData%LocalCompanyname. Because I don't want my app to be installed and I want it to be a just .exe file, and it leaves some files on that computer. I like it to be in my apps location. Can I change that default location?

I plan to hold the relevant logon details (in encrypted form, of course) in the app.config file, with the appropriate details selected depending on the environment and application. I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..
I know that when using my.settings that when I exit my app that it saves them and then next reload it imports my.settings back.
My question, is there a way to create this user.config file on the apps first load?

The Setting is in the Folder Options in the Control Panel. Double click on Folder Options, Goto File Types Tab, Click on the Advance Button. There are three checkboxes at the bottom of the dialog box:
Confirm Open after Download
Always show Extension
Browse in same Window
I want to change the "Browse in same Window" setting.

I have two projects involved, a UI layer and a data access layer. I can modify the connection string at runtime in the UI, but I want to be able to set the connection string on the data access layer the same way. Right now I'm trying to use application settings but I don't know how to access settings from one project in another.
To start with, I know that applications scope settings are read only, and user scope settings are read/write. My problem is this: I am creating an application which will be used in a setting where an "administrative" user (admin in this case does not denote any computer ability whatsoever- just the one in control of the computer) will be installing my application onto a computer where several users will likely use the application. I have a number of program settings which I would like the administrative user to be able to set, and have those settings be used for all users who run the program.

I am using Watin mostly to automate thing I do by hand. Sometimes, I need to change proxy. To do this, I have to set up IE to use a local proxy all the time (listens locally and forwards to a remote porxy), and then by hand change the settings of that program each time I need to use another proxy.
This is not an elegant solution! It may work, but it is not nice.
So, my question is, how do I change programmatically IE settings while using Watin? I code in VB.NET.
We have a VBScript that launches an Access app that connects via ODBC to SQL Server - wouldn't you know the server name is changing.
Is it possible to use VBScript to modify the ODBC information in the registry to point to the new server? Basically changing one specific value for one specific key. Am I better off deleteing the ODBC key and readding it from scratch?

Unfortunately I get now the behavior that the settings are still read from the local store (if they are existing there), but are written correctly to the roaming store.
