View 4 RepliesI am working on an inventory managment project for a lumber mill. I am currently writing a piece of software to be used on the sorting section of the mill. The problem I am having is when a stick of lumber needs to be cut down in lengt. My current setup has a combo box that is populated with lengths of lumber that we might have (2' - 60'), a "Add" button and a data control (homemade solution with lots of labels, and panels).
The user will scan a tag into the system, and the system pulls up the info from the db. If the piece need to be cut, the user will select the length of the cut, and click the add button. The system will then populate the first line of the data control with the info from the cut (previous piece info, and new length). It also populates a pieceObject struct. This happens for any additional cut that might happen.
The problem I am having is that everytime I press the "Add" button, the length variable will update every length in the piece array.
Here is a section of the code I am dealing with.
piece is a lumberPiece, and pieceAry is a array of 15 lumberPieces
Each time the add button is pressed, the current data is stored into the array, and then the pieceNum is incremented.

But not all the words to show in the combo box B if they aren't associated with the Word picked in Combo Box A. I am getting an error when i try to populate some combo boxes with a value, the combo box has values in and the right amount the code is getting the right number.
the error msg is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

I am coding a program for a movie trivia game that randomly shows a movie quote and the the user selects a movie name from a combo box that matches. I used a array for the movie quotes and a comboBox for the movie names. I have coded a portion of the program but I am stuck on how to compare the array quote being shown to what movie the user selects from the comboBox. I have tried numerous different things but none seem to work right. The way I have it coded now it shows that every movie I pick that it is right even if it is wrong. I am going to show part of the code here and also attach the entire solution for anyone that needs it .

The reason is so the user will not have a blank return on a query. The first form I created like this worked great, no issues. This form only allows one combo box (Number_of_Lightheads) to disable any others. Below is the code I have for this Form. why the other combo boxes will not disable the ones that are called out in the code?

I have two combo boxes and I am currently using MicroSoft SQL Server to get the instance name into one combo and the databases on that instance into the other combo. I am wanting to switch to System.Data to get these values and I am able to get the instance through enumeration but am having trouble finding where to get the database name values assigned to that instance.Does anyone know the equivalent of SMO Server.databasename is in System.Data?

The above code works fine! But im having trouble trying to now retreive whats stored in the array.In the above example, an entry will be stored in serialports(4), all other array elements will be blank.If I do this it works.

But I'd like to loop though all array elements and print out ALL the PortNames, The below code doesnt work, I get an error Object variable or With block variable not set.

I'm trying to sort an array based on a structure but whenever I do this, it basically erases all the data in the entire array.I have verified that the array is populated correctly, it is when using array.sort that everything returns blank.

View 2 RepliesI didn't think it fair to post a comment on Fredrik Mörk's answer in this 2 year old post, so I thought I'd just ask it as a new question instead..NB: This is not a critiscm of the answer in any way, I'm simply trying to understand this all before delving into memory management / the marshal class.
In that answer, the function GetByteArray allocates memory to each object within the given array, within a loop.Would the GetByteArray function on the aforementioned post have benefited at all from allocating memory for the total size of the provided array:

I just wonder if allocating the memory, as shown in the answer, causes any kind of fragmentation? Assuming there may be fragmentation, would there be much of an impact to be concerned with? Would allocating the memory in the way I've shown force you to call IntPtr.ToInt## to obtain pointer offsets from the overall allocation pointer, and therefore force you to check the underlying architecture to ensure the correct method is used*1 or is there a better way? (ToInt32/ToInt64 depending on x86/64?)
*1 I read elsewhere that calling the wrong IntPtr.ToInt## will cause overflow exceptions. What I mean by that statement is would I use:

I'm using the following code to read in a highscores file with the score written first and the player's name written to the next line, and then display the top 3 scores or fewer if there aren't 3 scores written to the file. A highscores display should have the scores sorted with the highest first so that's what this program tries to implement.
Array.sort() isn't doing a damn thing. In fact, the program's not even reversing the arrays like it should either. I've tested array.sort() this way with the names and scores arrays given explicitly and it works fine. I thought maybe it was still reading the data as string even though it's declared otherwise but it rounds off decimals when I change the array type to Integer so I'm pretty sure it's not that.
I have no idea why reading the data in from a file changes how it's sorted. My teacher didn't understand what was going on either. Does anyone know what's going on here?
