Login Form - Comparing Password On SQL?

Aug 10, 2009

I've setup a login form on an app I am building and I am using that to pull back user details from SQL @USername, then comparing the password on SQL to the one typed into the login form. The username and password get pulled back from SQL and fill two text boxes which are hidden from the user under a logo image (I haven't actually set them to visible = false cause I've had that cause errors itself with other things before)

Code on the Ok button on the login form:
Private Sub OK_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OK.Click
Dim UserLogin = Trim(UsernameTB.Text)
Dim UserPass = Trim(PasswordTB.Text)
If String.IsNullOrEmpty(UsernameTB.Text) Then

Comparing An Object To A String Literal?

Feb 2, 2011

This might just be a matter of taste, but I'm wondering if there's a "recommended" way to compare a variable of type Object (which might be Nothing or have a different dynamic type than String) to a string literal in VB.NET. The following options obviously won't work:

If myObject = "Hello World" Then ... -- won't compile
If myObject Is "Hello World" Then ... -- tests for reference equality, which is just wrong
If myObject.Equals("Hello World") Then ... -- throws an exception if myObject is Nothing
If DirectCast(myObject, String) = "Hello World" Then ... -- throws an exception if myObject is not a string

Thus, the only (simple, single-expression) solution I could find is to use

If "Hello World".Equals(myObject) Then ...

which looks a bit clumsy to me. Did I miss any obvious alternative, other than doing type checks or explicit checks for Nothing?(Of course, we're talking about Option Strict On.)

.net - Basic String Comparison - Comparing The Vars Gives A False

Aug 5, 2009

after slicing and dicing, i got 2 vars with the following values in vb.net:

strTag = "&lt;#<span class=SpellE>vermittler_person_Name</span>&gt;"
tmp = "&lt;#<span class=SpellE>vermittler_person_Name</span>&gt;"

Comparing the vars gives a false:

strTag = tmp ' ==> false

Comparing the values directly right there gives a true:

"&lt;#<span class=SpellE>vermittler_person_Name</span>&gt;" = "&lt;#<span class=SpellE>vermittler_person_Name</span>&gt;" ' ==> true

Both are strings, i tried all kinds of stuff: string.compare, string.equals, also regex etc. etc. everything works perfect with all the other strings with simlilar structure, just not and only not with "vermittler_person_Name" in the middle...

DataGridView Search / Sort - Comparing String In Textbox

Nov 17, 2009

I have a dataGridView and a textbox on a form. I want to be able to search through the dataGridView and sort it compared to the string in the text box. Ex: I type "acv" in the text box and all strings containing "acv" are sorted to the top. I'm accomplishing this with a bunch of gymnastics involving datatable.select and some clearing and filling but it's ugly and slow.

Comparing The Text Boxes?

Jul 10, 2011

I have 2 Text Boxes containing lists of names and I have a 3rd text box which I would like to use to determine the names that are missing from textbox2 that are listed in textbox1.

Textbox1 is: Customer
Textbox2 is: Closed Sale
Textbox3: is Sale not finalized

Would be great if it could auto populate into textbox 3 if not I will just use a button to action the function. First crack at dabbling with VB and whilst googling has managed to aid me in many ways unfortunately sometimes it is difficult to find relevant threads.

Comparing A Text Box Value To A SQL Table Column?

Jun 3, 2010

Does any one know how I can compare the numeric value of a text box on my Visual Basic 2008 form to the values in a particular column of a SQL database table? Things seem to work fine with bound controls when there are related records in the child table, but if a value is selected that has no related child records the form continues to display old information from the last record viewed. I would prefer to have the fields on the form go blank.

Parsing / Comparing Text And Display Result?

Apr 12, 2010

I am trying to use the Boot log and I really don't have much experience with parsing and comparing. What I need to do is to get only the minutes and seconds time stamp from a string similar to this from the boot log

Did not load driver SystemRootSystem32DRIVERSsrv.sys
Loaded driver SystemRootsystem32DRIVERSMpNWMon.sys
Microsoft (R) Windows (R) Version 6.1 (Build 7600)
4 11 2010 23:40:47.375
Loaded driver SystemRootsystem32
tkrnlpa.exe

Next once I get the minutes and seconds subtract 5 seconds
Next compare the resulting minutes and seconds to the minutes and seconds from a second file and display the result

EXAMPLE: If you take the minutes and seconds from above 40:47 - 5 = 40:42.
Next you get the minutes and seconds from the second file and you get 40:59
So you wind up with 40:59 - 40:42 = 00:17

Most Concise String.Replace To Mask A Password?

May 9, 2012

Let's say I have the following string:"/encryption:aes128 /password:<PASSWORDHERE> /log:log.txt"

I need to write this to a log file but the password needs to be masked (replaced with asterisks for example).I can do this easily with String.IndexOf and String.Replace in a few lines of code but I'm interested in seeing how others would implement this so that the code is as short and concise as possible. A one line replace function would be best.

My goal here is to see/learn some new techniques of combining string functions.

Note that I am not interested in using a RegEx.

SQL Command String - Update Password Within Database

Nov 17, 2011

I have a problem with the code below as a SQL command string. Note: Using .Net Framework 4.0 in Visual Studio 10 Professional. Database is a Microsoft Access file. The idea is that this SQL command string will update a password within my database. Also note that I have tried the string below with and without the ";" at the end and it does not work either way. The problem is most likely extremely obvious, but I can't seem to find it. I have commented below the code what each part of the String is.

"UPDATE Users SET Password='" & tbx1.Text & "' WHERE Username = '" & sUsername & "';"
' Users is my Table name within the Database.
' Password is the field that I want to edit within the Users table.
' tbx1.Text is where the password is stored within a text box.
' Username is the field which I would like to compare with sUsername which is a variable within the code.

Solution was square brackets, Command string now looks like this:
"UPDATE Users SET [Password]='" & tbx1.Text & "' WHERE [Username]= '" & sUsername & "'"

Get Password From Text File?

Jun 7, 2011

I have an application that currently operates based on a static password that is hard coded into the application. I would like to somehow have the application look in a text file, say: C:passtest.txt for a password. The text file will have nothing but the 1 password in it, it is just to make the changing of the password easier than having to recompile it everytime.

This is in VB.net. Also, there is no required user name for the application, just 1 textbox (TextBox1) that asks for the password.

I suppose the application (upon startup) should read the text file, grab the password, and save it into a string variable called "password".
