In a form, I have a textbox, where I want to enter a variable name

Then I want to display the value of that variable

I read some info about Reflection, but they all seems to refer to controls and not simple variable

Feb 9, 2011The code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.
Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that.When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

Nov 9, 2011I'm programming a basic slot machine in Visual basic, and want to use a for loop to randomly choose the image for each slot, display the image in each slot, and change the slotName variable (so I can check later on which symbols are in the slots) for each slot. The problem I'm finding with a for loop is that the variables and objects for each slot have different names (slot1Name, slot2Name, slot3Name, lblSlot1, lblSlot2, lblSlot3, etc). Is there any way I could have could something like:
currentSlotName = "slot" & i & "Name"
This is the code at the moment, this code is repeated (with different variable and object names), for each of the 3 slots, which is pretty inefficient.

Aug 2, 2011What I am trying to do is scan through the arraylist that has the number of the label control and concatenate this to the word "label" to end up with "label1", "label2", etc. Then I can then set it's visible property. The values in the array are based on tests in the code.
I haven't hit upon the right way to convert the string "label1" to the name of an object.

Convert String To Integer With Variable Decimal Sign?
Nov 22, 2011I am currently looking into the conversion of a string value to an integer. Obviously I will need to do some validation as to whether the passed value is in fact convertible to an integer.
At the heart of my question is this: the users' local is nl-BE (dutch (Belgium)), which means that we use a comma as decimal sign (and points as thousands separator); e.g. 123.456,78 would be a valid nl-BE number. Now, when using the numeric keypad, the
decimal key will yield a point, not a comma (weird huh!). So many user will enter 123456.12 and when converted to an Int, this should yield 123456.
The thing is that I want to cover all possible angles; both points and commas may be used as decimal sign by the users. So I wondering if anyone has written some code that deals with such a situation. I was thinking of an extension method that makes the
conversion based on whether a point or a comma is last used in the passed string (since no thousands separators should occur after the decimal sign).

Mar 6, 2012I am looking for a way to convert my List(Of string) into an Object in vb. So in the end it would be the same as declaring Dim cArray() As Object = new Object. Can anyone point me to how i can achieve this? I cannot use the LINQ .ToArray as that creates a string array and this is not acceptable for my work. I need to pass this object into another one that has the parameter (aArray as Object).

Function That Will Convert Input String To Actual Object
Jan 12, 2011I have an object with a number of properties (let's say object.one, object.two, object.three). There are about 30 of these properties and they all hold a string ("Pass" or "Fail"). Right now the existing code checks whether the property has value "Pass" or "Fail" and then runs some code that prints stuff out. That is, the same snippet of code is duplicated 30 times, one for each of these properties.
The code looks something like this
If (object.one = ... )
...
End if
If (object.two = ... )
...
End if
If (object.three = ... )
...
End if
I want to use a loop to clean this mess up (each block is huge), but am not sure how to do it. I was thinking perhaps there was a way such that I might be able to construct a string like "object.one" and run some function that will tell the compiler that this is actually an object's property? That way I could create an array containing the object's name like my array = {"object.one", "object.two", "object.three"} and then do something like, in pseudocode
For each string in my array
If (some_function(string) = ...)
...
End If
Essentially, it would take those massive blocks of duplicated code and reduce it to just one block. Is there such a some_function that I am looking for? This is in VB.net.
Referencing An Object Using A Variable String In Visual Basic 2010
Oct 8, 2010I have several sets of similar objects (labels, progress bars) on a form in Visual Basic 2010 on Windows. In my code, I have collections that contain data, which needs to be pushed into the value/text property of each.
I would like to get a solution similar to PHP in that I can assign values somewhat like:
For ID as Integer from 0 to count(collectionExample)
lblExample{ID}.Text=collectionExample(variableID)
...and as such to loop through so each of the different lblExample's were updated to their corresponding value.
The issue I have come to is that I cannot seem to reference an object on the form using a variable. I have also tried using something like
CallByName("lblExample" + variableID, "Text", CallType.Set, exampleCollection(variableID))... however I still can't combine the string and variable to reference the object.
Any solutions on referring to objects in VB2010 by combining a string prefix and a variable string identifier, similar to PHP's $variable{$variable} approach?

In the first line of code, any changes made to Ds will reflect in DsTemp. However, in the second line of code, any changes made to Ds will not reflect in DsTemp because we are only "copying" the contents & schema of Ds. Likewise is there a method or a work around to "copy" a Form object?
