Jun 5, 2009
i'm trying to copy a file from my computer to another comp. i'm using windows xp, and the other comp is using a win xp embeded. on the other machine i run a web service which has a function that gets the file's url and tries to download it. i'm trying to use a shared directory from my computer, and i'm getting an access denied error. When i try to cennect directly from the other machine (using run...), all works fine, even with a test program.

I'm trying to copy a file to a remote computer using the IO.File.Copy method. When I attempt to copy the file, the method throws an UnauthorizedAccessException exception, which is understandable because I am not able to supply logon credentials. My question is: I have the logon credentials (Computer name, username, password) so how can I copy the file to the remote system without resorting to an overkill API call (namely WNetUseConnection)?

What I tried was using My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile(), and created a shared folder in the other computer to do downloading stuff.But, in fact I didn't know how to fill the path to the other computer, the error was: "...path not supported..."
How about this:
ServerName1 = cmbServerName1.Text.Trim()
database = cmbDataBase1.Text

I have a VB2008 application which can control a windows service i.e. start, stop, pause etc. This runs ok on a Windows XP machine but not on a Win 7 machine (message is - Service error cannot open <service name> service on computer '.') ( if I stop the UAC then it runs ok ). It seems to be a rights issue,

When I use:
File.Copy(strRemoteFolder, strLocalFolder)
I get an UnauthorizedAccessException with the following message: "Access to the path ... is denied."In .NET, how do I copy a file from a remote computer that requires authentication to my local machine? I understand that I'm going to need to supply a username and password in some fashion, but I don't know how to supply that information via an API in .NET.

I am working on a backup utility for use with the mysql db. Because I need the actual backup to run regardless of if a user is logged on or not, I created the backup engine in a windows service.
Basically the backup engine checks to see if a backup job is scheduled to be run and if it is, it kicks off a mysqldump to do the backup. For sake of performance I am saving all backup jobs to the local c: drive then doing a file copy to the user defined destination.
Everything works fine except for the file copy. If the user selects a local resource to the computer it works fine. However, if a network drive is selected, I get an error that it cannot find the path.
I started thinking about it and believe this is expected since the backup engine is probably oblivious to whatever mapped drives that particular user has, i.e. the mapping process is done when someone logs in and my app is running at a lower level.
I started doing some research on this problem and found that some people are saying that windows services are oblivious of networks all together. This seemed a little odd to me so I thought I would bring the issue here.
Is a windows service truely unaware of network activity? How can I change the program to move the completed backups over to a network drive?

I've looked through several posts to find potential solutions to this problem, however I don't find them very suitable for my needs.Some included the user to run the application as Administrator However, even as I start VS2010 as administrator, starting or stopping my service continues to throw the exception.

I have a project in which we would like to do the following :Install a service that perform several tasks. this would be put on Computer A and B.Another computer C serves as a witness; At start, only A is running because the work it performs cannot be duplicated;Should A fail, then B must start. C should be the one that verify is one is running or not;Sholud A return back up after a fail, then B still runs and A is on stand-by;Should B then fail, C start A services,And So On.Is it possible, if so how ? Both A and B have a SQL server 2008 on them but this part is taken care of for us.I tried stopping a service (that I know is running) and it dosn't seem to work.[code]In this case, strServiceName is "Communication Interface" which is a service I recently add and started manually.I am running under windows 7.

I am writing a Windows Service that will shut the machines down in my domain at 6:00 PM every night. I just want to do an If/Then statement to see if someone is logged into the machine before I shut them down. For example: If Machine_Is_Logged_In = True Then
Do Nothing Else Shut Down The Machine I've been searching for the syntax but can't find it. I've tried both "isauthenticated" and "my.user.name = "" " but nether of these work.

This has to be really simple and I am completely missing the boat. I have a VB2008 express windows forms project with several forms and an access database that I work on here at work. I want to copy it to a thumb drive and take it home and work on it there, then bring it back, etc.

All, I have a Custom object which I have written using VB.NET (.net 2.0). The object instantiates its own threading.timer object and carries out a number of background process including periodic interrogation of an oracle database and delivery of emails via smtp according to data detected in the database. The following is the code implemented in the windows service class [Code].
After a little bit of experimentation I arrived at the above code in the OnStart method. All functionality passed testing when deployed from VS2005 on my development PC, however when deployed on a true target machine, the service would not start and responds with the following message: "The service on local computer started and then stopped..." Am I going about this the correct way? If not how can I best implement my incident manager within the confines of the Windows Service class. It seems pointless to implement a timer for the incident-manager because this already implements its own timer.

I have written a service to run an exe.What I have also tried to do is check if the file is present on the local computer, and if not copy it from a networked drive to the local computer.
If File.Exists("\\static1\software\testapp.exe") = True Then
File.Copy("\\static1\software\testapp.exe", "C:\Program Files\Testing\testapp.exe")
End If
I have previously ensured that the directory exists.When I run this as a service, it doesn't work. No errors are thrown up, but the file is not copied.When I put this into a windows forms application it works fine.
I have used:
Imports System.IO
In the header. why this won't work?
I have also tried:
My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile("\\static1\software\testapp.exe", "C:\Program Files\Testing\testapp.exe")
And that also does not work.I am trying to run this on Windows XP Professional.

I'm using System.Management.ManagementScope to connect to a remote computer and install an MSI package. This works great if the MSI is located on the remote computer, but it fails if I try to use a network location to run the MSI from. The UNC path is correct because if I manually type it from the remote computer it runs fine. There must be a limitation (security I'm thinking) that prevents things from running via WMI if the exe isn't local to the remote machine.My last hope will be to copy the MSI from the network location, store it locally on the remote computer, then run it - but I'd really rather not have to do that.

Here's the code that I have:
TextBox3.Text = ""
WebBrowser1.Document.ExecCommand("Copy", False, vbNull)
TextBox3.Paste()
TextBox1.Text += TextBox3.Text & vbCrLf & vbCrLf 'This code just adds the pasted text from one textbox to another.
Question:
After I install and run the application on my main computer that I coded this app in work, but when I go to transfer/install it onto my laptop, the code will NOT copy and paste from my webbrowser to my textbox?

I'm looking for help on developing a small program/script that helps me with the task I have detailed below. I am NOT submitting this as homework. This is work-related, but I'm NOT asking you to do my job. I'm taking this as an opportunity to learn more about programming by doing a task that I need done. I'm very interested in core concepts, steps, and your advice on how best to tackle this task (which tools, language, etc.)

I have a program that uses IO.File.Copy to copy files from point a to point b. Its slow, which is fine because there rather large files. I was wondering if there is way to get an estimate time to copy a particular file(s).
Example: File a will take 1 hour to copy, File B will take 30 minutes to copy. Estimate Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes.
