I have tried several different ways on trying to do this but no luck. I have worked on this for a couple days already. Very frustrated I need some assistance with this issue

Apr 9, 2009I am in a "survey of programming languages" course and have a professor who doesn't teach. There is no text book for this course.I am working a VB Form project to take a URL, grab the HTML source code, parse out all words, and count the occurrences of each word on the page. I have built the form, and written the code to parse the words and store them in an array. What is the most efficient way to count the occurrences of each individual word in that array (case insensitive), sort the results decreasing from most frequent, and display the results of the ten most used words. I will be displaying the results in two separate listboxes on my form. 1 listbox shows the words, and the other shows the number of occurrences.

Dec 23, 2010I have a text file stored as a string variable. The text file is processed so that it only contains lowercase words and spaces. Now, say I have a static dictionary, which is just a list of specific words, and I want to count, from within the text file, the frequency of each word in the dictionary. For example:
Text file:
i love love vb development although i m a total newbie
Dictionary:
love, development, fire, stone
The output I'd like to see is something like the following, listing both the dictionary word and its count. If it makes coding simpler, it can also only list the dictionary word that appeared in the text.
WORD, COUNT
love, 2
development, 1
fire, 0
stone, 0
Using a regex (eg "w+") I can get all the word matches, but I have no clue how to get the counts that are also in the dictionary, so I'm stuck. Efficiency is crucial here since the dictionary is quite large (~100,000 words) and the text files are not small either (~200kb each).

May 31, 2010I have an SQL database with a single table with several colunmns. I want to count how many times a certain number appears in one of the columns. E.g. I have the following:
A B C
8 4 6
0 9 3
1 4 6
4 7 1
I want to count the number of times 4 is used in column B. I have looked at using the following, but not sure if this is even the right approach:
Dim db as New MainTblDataSet
Dim BCount = Aggregate B In db.MainTbl Into Count(B.B = num)
where num=the number I am counting the instances of (4 in this case).
The hope is that BCount will equal 2, but it returns 0 every time.

It only seems to work if the first column is an integer datatype, which is the case for my other tables, but the table which I am currently dealing with using a string datatype. Is there another way to count the number of rows without using SQL statements or can I adapt my existing code in some way?

Mar 8, 2010I have a datatable that stores information on employees. What i'm trying to do is use it to run a seniority list looping through the table using the current system date. The looping part i have no problem with, and the system date calculation also i know how to do. The problem call the date from the startDate column to do the calculation.
i have tried

May 9, 2010I have an application where event driven events are already detected. Each time an even is detected I increment a counter.I would like to add the following functionality:
1.) I would like to create a time stamp each time an event is detected and store them in some kind of data structure.
2.) I would like to count how many events are being stored (or in essence count how many events have occurred in the past 10 seconds, not once but continuously).
3.) I would then like to discard of any events older than 10 seconds note events are interrupt driven and can occur more frequently than once a second, but updating my count of how many events have occurred in the past 10 seconds can be done as infrequently as say once a second.

I need to iterate through the text's words (those which builds the text which the user see on the screen) and change their content and formatting. For instance, change the word "room" to the word "home", applying to the last a red color.
I need to change words whether they are formatted or unformatted.For instance, if a word is in Italic, colored, or just regular black text, it makes no difference for me.Each word will be replaced with one which have about identical length, so I don't want that this operation will effect the general page layout. All images and other objects should remain at their positions.It is preferred that the process of this operation will not be visible to the user. Only its result should be visible (i.e, no visible selections of text).If this operation can be done either directly on the FlowDocumet or with properties/methods of the RichTextBox, the simple one is preferred (but exmaples for both will be ideal).
