I've got two text files. The first has got a list of certain keywords. Each one if these keywords are fed into a combobox. Now, when I choose one of the items from this combobox, I want to search the other textfile for the same keyword and read from that point to the next keyword. And then feed each line into a listbox. Perhaps I should use an INI-file for this purpose, doesn't really matter for me.
The textfiles have this structure;
Textfile1:
London
Oslo
New York
Hamburg
Amsterdam
The second textfile has this structure;
Textfile2:
'London'
Apples
Oranges
Pears
'Oslo'
Pasta
Salami
Monkeyballs

Dada
Duda

Is this possible? The reason I want to do it this way is to create a fully dynamic system. One which relies fully on whatever information is stored in these textfiles. I'm gonna build pretty complex strings from these results later on. So far, I've got this to read the first file and add each line to the combobox:

There's an INI file that I want to access and read information from. This is the complete content of the INI file in question: http:[url]....I believe it is because of the [ ] tags in that INI file. Because they work if I remove the tags.My program has a bunch of comboboxes, trackbars and checkboxes. These items will be filled by the information taken from the INI file.For instance, ini file has these lines;

If it's apparent to anyone that I should be doing something elThis code does work but, very slow. These reports take up to 20 minutes for about 100 files so I am wanting to decrease the time somehow. I have attached the whole sub in a text file, it's about 900 lines long so don't think I should post all of it. This is one part that seems to take the longest:Partial code that reads the text into a string, then each line is read to find whether it holds the data or not. Inside this while loop, I am checking numerous lines to see what they hold and extract specific items. First I verify it's a interface by checking for "line protocol".

It seems simple enough, but apparently I cant figure it out. Theres more to my actual problem, but once I figure out this concept then I can do the rest. I want to search a list for a given string, and if it matches, then print it out. If it doesnt match, then it moves to the next item in the list. If if doesnt find any matches, it says "no matches found".

I have the following simple code for searching for a text string within a folder and have several questions:

The folder will contain up to 1,000 text files (at any point) at 20kb to 50kb each. The scan should occur every 5 sec with ~200 new files and (-) ~200 exiting files during this period.
Questions: The previous code only catch files from 1 text string. Is there a way of doing one search and returning the files which contain any of the 3 strings? Is there a more effective way of achieving this? Is there a simple / effective way of searching each file only one time by keep track of previous results while searching only the 200 new additions each scan?

I have to scan through documents. Excell, Word, txt, ect looking for company names that match a pre-difined list of companies.I then email the companies some specifics in regards to that doc.The problem I have been having recently is that the list of companies keeps growing and I am starting to miss some more than I used to.What I would like to build is a tiny app that has 2 Text boxes.1 on the left for input (where I would copy/paste) the document text I receive.and one on the right for the output where it will highlight any line that contains the name of any of the pre-defined companies.

I am writing a small app that is retrieving data from a device connected to a virtual com-port. I connect without problems to the device using the settings 9600-8-N-1.
I need to send the command <esc>MS , the device then sends back the data to a computer. I have tried this using Hyperterminal with success. I also did this with Excel and VBA. I used the MSComm32 Active X control:

This returns the error message "Error: expecting a command". I have done som tests in HyperTerminal, and have concluded with:
-If I dont send <esc>, I get error "Expecting a command"
-If I send wrong command (ie MD instead of MS) i get error "Bad command"
Based on this, I suspect that I don't pass the escape character correctly to my device. So I wonder how to do this?
I have an application that will run on a terminal similar to a micros terminal. The terminal is already running another vendors app that captures the users logon ID from a swipecard. I need to capture the same logon ID at the same time. This is no problem, I just hook it.
The problem is I have another app which also captures swipes. In development I am running both apps for testing. It appears that when I unhook one app it unhooks both. Rehook and all is fine. As my two apps will never be on the same terminal this is not a problem. What I am concerned about is the vendors app unhooking mine or the other way around.
I would of thought that each app would have it's own ID and that each hook would be independent. I have considered finding a way to determine if a global hook is present and then use some logic to decide on unhooking or not but can't find anything.

View 12 RepliesI noticed that my application is running a bit slow. This is a Windows Service built using VB2010 with SQL Server as a back end. Its main function is to poll a folder looking for a text file. If found it reads the text file and imports the data into SQL Server.
While the slowness could be caused by a number of reasons, I am looking at my code to determine if it could be more efficient. Below I've pasted snippets of code where I initialize the DB connection and execute SQL statements. I've also included a snippet that illustrates how I am processing the text file.
I'd appreciate if the group could have a look at these and let me know if the method that I am using is the most efficient possible. At this time I am also focusing on other probable issues, but I can't rule out the possibility that the code that is in place might be a contributing factor.

I have been taking a class in Visual Basic and am currently working on my final project which I am having some trouble with. I am using Visual Basic 2010 express The project is to create an application that will store data in a text file, specifically, Last Name, First Name, Customer Number, Address, City, State, ZIP Code, Telephone Number, Account Balance, and Date of Last Payment. I have gotten everything done except the ability to search the file by Last Name or Customer Number. I have no idea how to go about this? I was thinking of ways to use indexof or Readline to be able to search the data, but I'm not familiar enough with the code to come up with a good solution. I have almost all my features working but there are one or two I can't get working. When the program loads a text file is read and the program lists the first name of everyone in the text file into a list box. I want to be able to get so that when you click a name in the list box, the persons information will be displayed in the text boxes to the left. And also when you edit those text boxes you can click the button for modify current and it will modify that persons data. The other problem I'm having is being able to search that text file for the users e-mail and return the first names of people who have that e-mail into the listbox.

My app is a Bible Reader. At load up I can choose Genesis Ch1 and its entirety pops into a rtb. I enter a word to search for like 'God' and hit the SEARCH button.
