It seems simple enough, but apparently I cant figure it out. Theres more to my actual problem, but once I figure out this concept then I can do the rest. I want to search a list for a given string, and if it matches, then print it out. If it doesnt match, then it moves to the next item in the list. If if doesnt find any matches, it says "no matches found".

Okay so i have a very large list of string (500 000 strings) i want to check the number of duplicate strings and maybe even isolate the duplicate strings if i can.
i cant find a fast method to do so :S
i tried using a string array (slower than list) takes ~15mins
i tried using list with the code below takes ~10 mins
that wont cut it :S i need something faster.

I have a problem finding strings that do not exist in a column in a database. I am going to use linq but its more the 'way' of doing I am concerned with.
I have strings like;
MEAL
GPST
EXLEG
EXLG ...etc
I need to find records that does not have this list of strings in, so for example DBML BUT sometimes I can have the string MEALDBML, or more concatenated. So this is a known string of MEAL and unknown string of DBML. I would then want to see that record. I do not know the unknown strings up front, so its a case of feeding in the strings I know are ok, and finding one that are outside that list. I was also thinking of regex?
Does anyone know how to do this? I'm stuck on a boat right now out to sea(Navy) and don't have access to vb.NET, its in my berthing...

I have the following simple code for searching for a text string within a folder and have several questions:

The folder will contain up to 1,000 text files (at any point) at 20kb to 50kb each. The scan should occur every 5 sec with ~200 new files and (-) ~200 exiting files during this period.
Questions: The previous code only catch files from 1 text string. Is there a way of doing one search and returning the files which contain any of the 3 strings? Is there a more effective way of achieving this? Is there a simple / effective way of searching each file only one time by keep track of previous results while searching only the 200 new additions each scan?
I've got two text files. The first has got a list of certain keywords. Each one if these keywords are fed into a combobox. Now, when I choose one of the items from this combobox, I want to search the other textfile for the same keyword and read from that point to the next keyword. And then feed each line into a listbox. Perhaps I should use an INI-file for this purpose, doesn't really matter for me.
The textfiles have this structure;

Is this possible? The reason I want to do it this way is to create a fully dynamic system. One which relies fully on whatever information is stored in these textfiles. I'm gonna build pretty complex strings from these results later on. So far, I've got this to read the first file and add each line to the combobox:

There's an INI file that I want to access and read information from. This is the complete content of the INI file in question: http:[url]....I believe it is because of the [ ] tags in that INI file. Because they work if I remove the tags.My program has a bunch of comboboxes, trackbars and checkboxes. I have to scan through documents. Excell, Word, txt, ect looking for company names that match a pre-difined list of companies.I then email the companies some specifics in regards to that doc.The problem I have been having recently is that the list of companies keeps growing and I am starting to miss some more than I used to.What I would like to build is a tiny app that has 2 Text boxes.1 on the left for input (where I would copy/paste) the document text I receive.and one on the right for the output where it will highlight any line that contains the name of any of the pre-defined companies.

I have a school project i am working on wich i am to build a program that randomly generates 500 alpha-numeric numbers (license plate numbers). the program needs to be able to search the 500 numbers and based on given criteria (a text box) that you put in return the matching results to another listbox. I want to use a System.Collections.Generic.List<Of T> and store custom objects in the list. I then want to filter the list by my own custom defined criteria and return a System.Collections.Generic.List<Of T> of all the objects in the list matching my search criteria. For searching in Java, you would create an object that implements the comparator interface. The object would then be passed as an argument to the list's sort method. Is there an equivalent VB way to do this BUT when searching for items in the list?I have looked at using delegate functions, but these pass EVERY item of the collection into the function, which is not efficient in any way.

My program creates a array of numbers as entered by a user and then finally adds them up. The form should be able to display the numbers typed in by the user. I know how to put one of these numbers into separate labels and could display each number that way but I wanted to know if there is a simple way to display the string that is created as a list in perhaps a read only text box or similar?

In general Combo Box looks for the strings in the list that Start with the text that typed in the textbox portion of combo box.
I want a feature in combo box which do not just look in the starting of the strings, insted they shold search the maching strings within any part of records i.e. If User types 'Ja' in textbox portion, the the list should show following maches with highlighting the mached records
