Dispose - Waste Memory - When The Sub Ends The Reference To The NewReadWorker Goes Away

May 16, 2012

Look at this code:

CODE:

My question: When the sub ends the reference to the newReadWorker goes away since it is local to the routine but the worker still runs until it is done. Is the worker disposed of properly when it is done or should I handle the worker better. I am not getting any errors from this design. I just don't want to waste memory.

VB 2010 - Express Webbrowser.Dispose Does Not Release Application Memory

Apr 13, 2010

An application that has 3 Webbrowsers instantiated at design time navigates to webbrowser2 15 times every minute with a different webpage. Webbrowser2 is disposed of after each web page is received and processed. The size of the private application memory continues to grow as when the disposal was not instigated. The application memory grows to 1GB and then the program stops responding. Any suggestions? [Code]

VB 2008 Memory Leak - The Graphic Doesn't Dispose Properly And Garbage Collector Gets It?

Jul 7, 2011

I have prided myself in having a pretty clean code however in the game I am making I have a player view (showscreen) and a host view, which is a copy of the player view (on a smaller screen). This way the host can see what's going on.The problem is that the graphic doesn't dispose properly and Garbage Collector gets it, though I have noticed it will crash if GC doesn't get it in time. The larger the showscreen window the more junk gets put into memory, which sucks.I thought I had everything correctly disposed below but still doesn't get the job done.

.net - Dispose Of These Unmanged Resources Without Requiring A Reference To Each?

Jun 23, 2009

I have a class bMainframe that manages the connections to 4 different mainframes. It allows for the same underlying unmanaged library to be opened in specific ways and more than one mainframe to be connected to at a time. Each library has its own disposal code for the unmanaged mainframe connection resource. The wrapper also has code that calls the individual mainframe connection's disposal code.

This causes an error if someone's project does not make use of all 4 mainframes, but calls the disposal on the wrapper. (FileLoadException could not load assembly X of the 4 managed mainframes) Since that disposal code checks to see which of the 4 are not nothing/null. Even if nothing/null this is causing .net to try to load the assembly and crash.

Is the disposal code in the outer wrapper helpful or necessary? is there a way to check if the assembly for a type is even loaded that doesn't trigger.net to load the type/assembly?I modified the code below to block the fileloadexception, but I don't believe this is the best way.

If disposing Then

.net - Get The Memory Address Of A Byref String Reference?

Mar 15, 2011

I am experimenting with more effective ways to generate forms. My experiments goes into the possibility to link strings, and other types, directly by their class reference and use it to update the original values without any strongly typed code.

I have been using GCHandle.AddrOfPinnedObject to get the memory address of the string, but it gives the the memory address of the string data, not the string class/reference that i need to change to allow me to use this approach.I am aware that strings are immutable and can not be changed (Actualy, you can, but its not recomended), but I do not want to change the actual strings, but change the reference to it (the string object). Is there some other way to get the address of a string object reference?

VS 2005 By Reference Variable Memory Efficiency

May 27, 2009

I'm building SQL statements with a bunch of values from a dataset. Obviously that gives some really long names to put inline or even in parameter. addwithvalue code so beforehand I just declare a bunch of variables with really short names and assign them to the DS's exact fields like: [code] but this way I'm putting all the data in the dataset into memory twice by copying it into a new variable, right? So I was thinking, if it's just a string variable representing a field on the dataset, why not declare it by reference so the variable is basically a handy nickname pointing to that field in the dataset. Will it even work to have a string declared by reference and connected to one value inside of a dataset? And if so, will that stop duplicating everything in memory? I forgot how to declare a variable as a reference to another variable instead of the normal way in VB.

Difference Between A Loop That Never Ends And A Loop That Ends?

May 25, 2010

I'm slowly learning about loops. I have a couple of questions

1) When a condition is being tested.. what does that mean? I don't understand the "condition" word.

2) What is the difference between a loop that never ends and a loop that ends?

I have the code for the loop that ends and the loop that never ends. I can see the difference in the code, but I don't understand what is making it different. Here is the code below.

Trimming A String At Both Ends?

Jun 12, 2011

I'm reading in an xml file, which is working fine with no problems, but I want to re-format one of the elements data attributes slightly.

The XML attribute output is currently Wind: NW at 6 mph

What I want to do is extract just the number from the string, I figured an easy way would be to simply play with the length of the string and assign it to another variable.

However, I've ran into a little problem.

I can use windRtrim = wind.Substring(0, wind.Length - 4) (Where windRtrim is the amended string variable and wind is the string from above)

This returns Wind: NW at 6

Which is great, but the problem now is trimming the correct number of characters from the beginning of the string as it'll be different if the number were to go over 9 (ie. 10 and above)

IDE Ends Running Program On Error

When I run a certain project from within the IDE and an error would come up (just any error, like dividing by 0), it won't jump into the IDE showing me the line where the error occured, but the program is simply ended and I am back in the IDE!.With any other project that is not the case. I cannot work further on this project with this problem. Of course I did a PC restart, but that didn't solve it.

I got Visual Studio Professional 2008 with SP1.

Making Rounded Ends On Lines?

May 13, 2011

I need some help importing data from Excel 2003 into VB10. My goal is to import the data and save it to a 2D array for later use within the application. The data is on sheet 1 of the workbook and goes from A1 to D1072 with a header row. I have done a lot of research on line to find a solution but have been unsuccessful. From what I have found I have put the following code together. When I complile and run the program I get the following errors.

1) I think while compiling it gives me this error: The source file is different from when the module was built.

2) While running the program it stops on the connect.Open() and has this error OleDbException not handled. Could not find installable ISAM.

VS 2008 Debugging Immediately Ends?

Sep 9, 2011

I have the most puzzling problem with VS2008 in regards to debugging my programs. Until recently I have been coding in VS2010 but due to some other system requirements with my work issued PC I have moved back to VS2008.All apps I developed in VS2010 always have and continue to debug as expected. However, any app I write in VS 2008 and try to debug, the application immediately ends before the first form is loaded. Again, if I run the same code in VS2010 I have no problems. I did notice the other day that if I debug without being connected to my corporate network, I can debug in VS2008 just fine.

Detecting When An External Program Ends To Start A New Event?

Apr 17, 2009

I need to be able to detect when an external program closes so that I can start another event within VB 2005. I have tried to do this by monitoring the processes on my computer. The problem is that this programs comes up as some weird sub-process. It has an Image Name, which is indented from the other Image Names, and it shows that the User Name is the Administrator. This is the only information you can get from the Processes tab. There is a Task Name under the Applications tab, however. I was wondering if there was some code to monitor the Applications tab instead of the Processes or if there is yet another way to do this.

VS 2010 - BackgroundWorker Class Logic Ends Abruptly

Oct 8, 2010

I am trying to create a tool which executes some oracle procedures and telnet commands. Besides this Job my tool also needs to update a counter in some table in oracle db at regular intervals(10 secs as per current settings). So I used backgroundworker class in VB.NET to implement this back ground job of updating the counter. My problem is I have put logs at every possible exit of the backgroundworker_dowork functions but still this logic stops working after some time --7-8 hours. I am not able to understand when/where/why/how is it stopping? I am saying logic has stopped because it stops incrementing the counter. And am saying it is exiting abruptly because in _RunWorkerCompleted, I have written a log and closed the application but nothing comes in the log and application is not exiting.

Private Sub backlogicthread_DoWork(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.DoWorkEventArgs) Handles backlogicthread.DoWork
WriteLog("Background worker", "entered")
dbbackcontrol = New OracleConnection(odbcBill)
Dim dr As OracleDataReader

Attempted To Read Or Write Protected Memory / Often An Indication That Other Memory Is Corrupt

May 22, 2007

Im getting a problem with one of my programs I have made in visual basic.NET where it gives me a memory error when i debug the program in the IDE. the exact error is this: "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt". My program basically has a few forms with text fields on that get their text values from an access database on the same hard drive. Im wondering if im doing something wrong because my program just seems to eat up memory whenever it does anything. For example I have one form that has a combobox on it and when you change the drop down list selection it retreives a few strings from the database and puts them into the relevant text boxes, if you keep changing the selection then the memory usage (in task manager) just keeps going up and up. occasionally I get the error mentioned above when debugging but in my built version of the program it throws an exception everytime the memory usage gets past 49K.

Also I noticed when debugging in the "immediate window" frame I get the following message often:A first chance exception of type 'System. Invalid OperationException' occurred in System.Data.dll...Do I need to somehow be "releasing" the memory that is used to gather data once it becomes redundant?
