Keeping Dataset In Memory Or Multiple SQL Queries?

Apr 19, 2011

I need to loop through a gridview to find records that match items in a different table (in SQL). Is the best method to loop through the gridview and call an SQL procedure on every loop to find matching records? Or should I pull the entire sql db into a datatable and query the dataset in my gridview loop?

'find source ID based on make/model/serial No combination.
Dim cSource As New clsSource()
Dim ds As DataSet = cSource.GetSources()

Print Document Memory Leak?

Mar 29, 2010

Im using the printdocument and printpreview control to print a datagrid. Anyway, printing works fine. First I declare a main bitmap background, draw everything I need on to that ect...

Every variable I declare, I dispose of at the end of the function.. However, it still appears there is a huge memory leak I cant figure out.. Maybe someone else has had this problem and knows where I can look.. I've even tried disposing the printdocument object and printpreview dialog themselves, but still no luck.. After awhile it seems visual basic will clean it up itself, but if someone went to print one of these giant reports and hit print again soon after, it will run out of memory..

.net - Get The Memory Address Of A Byref String Reference?

Mar 15, 2011

I am experimenting with more effective ways to generate forms. My experiments goes into the possibility to link strings, and other types, directly by their class reference and use it to update the original values without any strongly typed code.

I have been using GCHandle.AddrOfPinnedObject to get the memory address of the string, but it gives the the memory address of the string data, not the string class/reference that i need to change to allow me to use this approach.I am aware that strings are immutable and can not be changed (Actualy, you can, but its not recomended), but I do not want to change the actual strings, but change the reference to it (the string object). Is there some other way to get the address of a string object reference?

VS 2005 By Reference Variable Memory Efficiency

May 27, 2009

I'm building SQL statements with a bunch of values from a dataset. Obviously that gives some really long names to put inline or even in parameter. addwithvalue code so beforehand I just declare a bunch of variables with really short names and assign them to the DS's exact fields like: [code] but this way I'm putting all the data in the dataset into memory twice by copying it into a new variable, right? So I was thinking, if it's just a string variable representing a field on the dataset, why not declare it by reference so the variable is basically a handy nickname pointing to that field in the dataset. Will it even work to have a string declared by reference and connected to one value inside of a dataset? And if so, will that stop duplicating everything in memory? I forgot how to declare a variable as a reference to another variable instead of the normal way in VB.

Reference A Label In Iframe Document

I have a page which uses an inline frame. The inline frame is defined here: [code] I am trying to reference a label in the iframe document ("lblCompany"). I am getting an exception when I use the following reference: Response.Write(CType(ifrCard.FindControl("lblCompany"), Label).Text)(I am using Response.Write for testing. What I hope to achieve is to update the text in this label).

Dispose - Waste Memory - When The Sub Ends The Reference To The NewReadWorker Goes Away

May 16, 2012

Look at this code:

CODE:

My question: When the sub ends the reference to the newReadWorker goes away since it is local to the routine but the worker still runs until it is done. Is the worker disposed of properly when it is done or should I handle the worker better. I am not getting any errors from this design. I just don't want to waste memory.

Writing The Save Option - Code Up The Save Menu Option So That It Updates The Current Document?

Jun 10, 2010

I am writing a text editor program and I have written the new, open, save as, exit menu items but I am struggling with writing the save option. Now I have created the menu itself (well vb did, I just used insert standard items) but how do I code up the save menu option so that it updates the current document or if the documnt has not yet been saved bring up the save file dialog. Here is the code I have so far

Public Class Main
Private Sub NewToolStripButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles NewToolStripButton.Click, NewToolStripMenuItem.Click[code]....

I know I have some finishing touches such as messages and error handling and stuff but at the moment I want to get all the basics working,I think the save menu option is all I am struggling with at the moment.

How To Save The Result On Memory

May 4, 2009

I wrote a program which has 4 different menus. Each menu does some kind of calculations by first read numbers from binary image file and then writes the output file. I was wondering if I could output or write to memory instead of outputting to a file.

If that is possible then I think I could do all with one click instead of using 4 different menus (or forms).

Classes, References To Save Memory?

Jul 2, 2011

I have a class as follows:

Public Class Courses
Public CoursesOfferedMAIN As New List(Of Category)
Public CoursesList As New List(Of Course)

[Code]....

There is no problem with the code how ever, I would like to know, in the process I am following, the number of subjects, couses, examsets etc would all get repeated in the specific type lists like SubjectsList, examstypelist etc.. since they are being copied over it would take more memory.

Hence, my question or doubt would be, is it possible to use the same as references instead of copying them over to lists to save memory, or are there any methods better than this?

Vs2010 Save Image Memory Leak

Oct 5, 2010

I'm basically making an app to take screen shots in a game as I chat. There will be a bit more to it later, and I will likely be using PNG but that is besides the point for now.Whenever I take a screenshot and save, doesn't matter If I am saving converting quality or using system.drawing directly, the memory use goes up about 1.5MB per save. I'm rather new to VB.Net so I can't really figure out why...as far as I can tell I release everything.[code]Ihave tried setting it to nothing with no luck, and aside from that memory slowly goes up per time Enter is pressed. I'm not sure why data would be saving to memory when Subs and Functions are supposed to release data after use?

Save Word Document To HTML

Jan 8, 2009

I need to write some code that opens a Word Document and then either extracts the data so that a HTML document can be created or simply resaves it as an HTML document. I've had a quick look around the net and tried adding an Object Reference to Microsoft Word Object X.0 Library to my Project. So that I could play around with things, but immediately It was telling me the following weren't defined.

Dim objWdApp As Word.Application
Dim objWdDoc As Word.Document
Dim objwdRange As Word.Range

Could anyone either explain what kind of thing I would need to do or link me to some useful tutorial.
