How do you specify a multiple line string literal in Visual Basic .NET?
You can do it in C#: Multiline String Literal in C#
If I needed to escape a double quote character within a string literal I'd use two consecutive double quotes as follows:
Dim name = "Chuck ""Iceman"" Liddell"
However, it doesn't seem like consecutive # works the same way. The compiler is expecting a compiler directive to follow the # character, even when its enclosed in double quotes. How can tell the compiler that I want a # character in my string?
EDIT: as a few of the answers below point out, # is not a reserved character. I closed my solution in Visual Studio and re-opened it and no longer got the compiler squiggles warning me.
This might just be a matter of taste, but I'm wondering if there's a "recommended" way to compare a variable of type Object (which might be Nothing or have a different dynamic type than String) to a string literal in VB.NET. The following options obviously won't work:
If myObject = "Hello World" Then ... -- won't compile
If myObject Is "Hello World" Then ... -- tests for reference equality, which is just wrong
If myObject.Equals("Hello World") Then ... -- throws an exception if myObject is Nothing
If DirectCast(myObject, String) = "Hello World" Then ... -- throws an exception if myObject is not a string
Thus, the only (simple, single-expression) solution I could find is to use
If "Hello World".Equals(myObject) Then ...
which looks a bit clumsy to me. Did I miss any obvious alternative, other than doing type checks or explicit checks for Nothing?(Of course, we're talking about Option Strict On.)
I'm programming in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2008. I need to define a string literal containing the character "÷" equivalent to Chr(247). I understand that internally VS uses UTF-16 encoding, but when the source file is written to disk it contains the single byte value F7 for this character.
This source file is processed by another program that uses UTF-8 encoding by default, so it fails to interpret this character correctly, attempting to combine it with the following single-byte character. What encoding would correctly interpret the single byte F7 as the single character ÷?
Alternatively, is there a way of expressing a non-ASCII literal that uses only ASCII characters - like using some kind of escape sequence?
I am trying to update an Oracle Database record and i keep getting this error:
ORA-01704: string literal too long 5
I looked up that error and it seems that i have a limit of 4000 charters since i am using Oracle 10g. However, the prgblem is that its the same exact data i am putting back into that record so that is why i am unsure as to why its giving me that error for the same amount of data i took out of it.
Here is my update code:

My app has text boxes to accept input from user to questions shown on labels. When the user input is valid, a literal is added to a string incorporating the user input. If the user doesn't input anything or if user inputs "no" or "None" I want the literal and the user input to not add to my string. Make any sense? See my code below:

Can you use a variable to symbolize the type of style? For example, Dim FS as new font("Times New Roman", FSize,FontStyle.FS)
View 8 RepliesI'm looking for a way to search a string variable for two words and copy the text in between them into another variable. This needs to be done as many times as the match occurs.
View 3 RepliesI recently discovered that VB.NET 2010 lets you initialize strings by embedding them in tags instead of between double quotes. This is especially handy for spitting out raw xml and multi line strings. Is there a way to embed variables into the string? For example:[code]

I am trying to insert a string variable inside of two strings, and make a combined string. Public Sub Page_Load() Dim Id As String Id = Trim (Request.QueryString("Id")) End Sub Dim mp3text as string url... & Id & ".mp3" My goal is to make the mp3text variable have a string that is: url...(If Id is 7) It is for some reason not connecting up correctly. I checked what string it is outputting and this is what it is giving: url...It is missing the Id content.
View 12 RepliesThe code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.
Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that. When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

View 1 RepliesI have a List(of String()). I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort.Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. The length of all String() in the list is the same. For reference this question is similar to Sort List<String[]> except I am using VB.net and that question is hardwired to Index=0.
EDIT from OP's comments:I started simple with the non custom comparer but I am getting an error: expression does not produce a value. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Here is the code:
Public Shared Function SortListOfStringArray(ByVal ListOfStringArray As List(Of String()), ByVal SortByIndex As Integer) As List(Of String())
Return ListOfStringArray.Sort(Function(x, y) x(SortByIndex).CompareTo(y(SortByIndex)))
End Function
I am trying to make a style that only gets applied if the parent element of the element that the style refers to, has another specific style. Kind of like in CSS where you can do ".class1 .class2" to specify that the "class2" theme only applies if it is within an element with the class "class1". I do not wish to use any form of external DLLs or libraries for this task. I want to know if it's possible to implement on my own.
I've tried using MultiTriggers with no luck. I have a style that applies to all TextBlocks. I want the textblock to do the following: If the font-size of the textblock is 11 and the parent element's style is "PinnedSuggestion", set the foreground color to "#FF505050". If the font-size of the textblock is 11 and the parent element's style is "Suggestion", set the foreground color to "#FFCCCCCC". The conditions that I have tried to write to make this work, are as follows (the font-size condition is true, but the other one is not). The conditions are inside a style that applies to all textblocks in general.

just found out that replace(string does not do the same as string.replace when my string variable was an empty str the first one returns "nothing" and the second returns an empty string (as expected).just sloppy coding anyhow, it was a function that was converted from classic asp and never rewritten properly. View 1 RepliesI am creating an application and am very new to VB. I have 4 buttons on my form which is like my applications main menu. I would like that each of the buttons behaves in the following way when there is a mouse rollover: The Button back color is changed from the default to Red The Button text is changed to Blue, Bold, and increases in font size I would also like all the buttons to go back to their initial state when the mouse leaves.
Another thing, instead of me writing code for each of the buttons event handlers (Mouse Hovers, and Mouse Leaves) is there a way I can write this code once, maybe as a function and then always call it for any button that I create from here on so that any new buttons take on this behaviour.
I am going to be performing an XSLT transformation, transforming XML to an HTML table. It's tabular data, so that's why I'm not using div's.

View 1 RepliesI have a ListView called "orderReceiptTable" which I am able to properly access from the Code Behind. Within it is a literal called "orgName" which I obviously would like to populate with an organization's name. After much searching it was determined that FindControl was the right course of action. Perhaps I am using FindControl improperly but I am unable to actually have it "find" my Literal control. The code block is being called in the Page Load.
My code looks as such:
Dim orgNameString As String = getOrganizationName.getOrgName(organizationID).ToString()
Dim myOrgName As Literal = FindControl("orgName")
myOrgName = CType(orderReceiptTable.FindControl("orgName"), Literal)

With the squigly it displays the URL perfectly but with the squigly still there.
