File Chunking Fails When Served From IIS7 To Firefox
Oct 16, 2010
I have written a generic file serving handler in asp.net/vb.net..I recently moved to a windows 7 box and am now debugging under IIS7, and this is where the problems occure.Whenever I serve a file to either FireFox or Chrome (IE8 works fine) from IIS 7, the download will fail.
- In FireFox the error is "[some file name and path].part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read."
- In Chrome the error is "Error 330 (net::ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED): Unknown error."
- In IE8 it works fine
If I run the same code in IIS6, it works fine.If I run the same code in the Visual Studio virtual web server, it works fine (on windows 7 or XP).I am rather concerned about this as our production web server will soon be IIS7; which I'm starting to really love, and would hate to revert to IIS6 just because this won't work in IIS7.I've tried a number of different patterns.It seems to always fail on the Flush() line with the error "System. Web.HttpException = {"The remote host closed the connection. The error code is 0x8007 0040."}"One thing I have noticed, if I move the flush statment to the finally clause or remove it all together; firefox will attempt to read the entire file - it appears to be looping through the entire block of code just fine, until it hits the flush statement.If I remove the flush statment I still get an error and it still tries to read the entire file before asking me to save it.[code]

My company puts out a monthly newsletter which I host on our internal website. I have a page for the author of the newsletter to upload the latest version. Once the author has uploaded the latest newsletter, he sends a broadcast email to announce the new newsletter. Employees invariably check the new newsletter and send feedback to the author with corrections that need to be made.
Once the author has made the necessary corrections (typically within an hour of sending the broadcast email), he revisits my page and replaces the latest version with the updated newsletter.
Immediately following the replacement (or update, if you will) of the newsletter, anyone attempting to access it gets a 500 - Internal Server Error.
My IT guy who maintains the server cannot delete/rename/move the file because of a permissions error and has to do a lot of convoluted things to get the file deleted (and once the file is deleted, the author of the newsletter can re-upload the corrected copy and it works fine.
My IT guy and I are pretty sure that the problem stems from that I'm trying to replace the file while IIS is actively serving it to users (which I thought of and thought that I had coded against happening).[code]...

Background: I have an application that loads marketing companies into a drop down list if the currently logged in user is a member of that marketing group in active directory. The Group ACOMP_USER_BIG is compared to MarketingCompanyShortName Big in the database records via a web service. Problem: I have 3 Newly added AD Groups that won't load in production but load fine in the drop down on my local dev server. The deployment guy already tried doing an IISReset and that didnt fix the issue. All the AD groups have read access only and no write access. We need to find out more information on why the marketing company AD groups are not loading. How do I get the groups to load correctly or prove that the problem is not a programming issue and a deployment or AD issue? H*ere's the VB.NET Code behind that populates the marketing company drop down list.

Every time I start a new session of Internet Explorer, the web application prompts me for my Active Directory Username and Password instead of automatically retrieving that information from the currently logged in Active Directory profile.
How do I setup Single Sign On in the web config or default.aspx.vb file code-behind so that it doesn't prompt me for my active directory credentials? [code]....

I'm trying to write a simple load tester for one of our web services, which is served through IIS7. I'm launching a load of threads (as Tasks) that call the web service as a Web Reference.Despite the threads all starting, only 2 concurrent connections from the app can be handled by the web service. I'm aware that by specification simultaneous connections are limited to 2 per user. For the sake of this load tester, which I guess is one user, I would like to open many simultaneous connections.I have tried to add the following to the web.config of the web service.
<system.net>
<connectionManagement>
<add address="*" maxconnection="40"/>
</connectionManagement>
</system.net>
My setup is as follows:
The web service is located at [URL], where MyWebServiceApp is configured as an application.The webmethod can be viewed as something trivial that simply waits for, say, 20 seconds before returning a response (making it easy to see that only 2 connections are open at any one time).The simplest form of the load tester code is ass follows:
Imports System.Threading.Tasks
Module SuperBasicLoadTester
Sub Main()
[code]....
I've tried pointing other load testing software (e.g. soapUI) at the web service and have observed the same issue.
Edits: I should add that the web service box is running Windows 2008 R2.Also I have run SoapUI and my loadtester simultaneously and each is only able to request 2 connections each (i.e. 4 in total).

In out app we use dll that are loaded as addins. At startup we search the config files for these dlls in the application folder.The config files are named MyAddin.dll.config. On a win2003 R2 server running terminal services (in a domain with a SBS 2008) some of the users have problems reading the config files. I get an UnauthorizedAccessException when opening the config files like this:
Dim fs As New FileStream(strfile, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)
reader = New System.Xml.XmlTextReader(fs)
fs.Close()
When I rename the files to MyAddin.config this works fine. Is the OS restricting the access to xxx.dll.config files?

I have this method:
Private Sub SetIfNotNull(ByVal input As Object, ByRef destination As Object, ByVal ConversionType As ConversionType)
If input IsNot Nothing AndAlso input <> "" Then
Select Case ConversionType
Case DealerTrackConnection.ConversionType._String
destination = input
[Code] .....
And here is one call in which it fails:
SetIfNotNull(ApplicantElement.Element("suffix").Value, NewApplicant.Suffix, ConversionType._String)
If the element from the XML file is nothing (there is no tag), the method call fails. but I am checking for nothing.

I have a multi threaded app that writes log to file. occasionally, saving fails using this code:
Friend Sub SaveToText(ByVal FileName As String, ByVal Text As String)
'// create a writer and open the file
Dim objLock As New Object
SyncLock objLock
Dim tw As TextWriter = Nothing
[Code] .....
The error message I get:
The process cannot access the file 'error.log' because it is being used by another process.

I have just written an application in visual studio 2005, and would like to publish it for use on another computer. When I try to run the publisher, it fails and reports that it is missing an XML file that is located in the bin folder. I have checked the bin folder and the file is there. I am not sure what I am doing wrong? Has anyone else seen this type of error before?
Also, I should point out that while I was creating this app, I would some times copy the project to my desk top, and then change the name of the project folder. For example: myProgramV0 would be come myProgramV1. Then I would copy this back into where I normally keep my VB projects. I do not know if this had an effect on the program or not.

I have a little vb.net script that will copy a file, set its attributes to Normal, update the file time, and then set back the attributes to match those of the source file.
If IO.File.Exists(Destination) Then IO.File.SetAttributes(Destination, IO.FileAttributes.Normal)
IO.File.Copy(Source, Destination, True)
IO.File.SetAttributes(Destination, IO.FileAttributes.Normal)
[code]....
I however I'm encountering a quite strange problem. On some configurations, IO.File.SetLastWriteTimeUtc triggers an UnauthorizedAccess error, although the IO.File.Copy instruction worked very well.

My problem's simple. I'm attempting to load a login page for a site in a VB.NET WebBrowser control.
When I go to the site in Firefox, I see the site like normal.When I go to the site with my VB.NET WebBrowser control, I get a 401: Unauthorized error.
What could cause the WebBrowser to load something differently than Firefox? Is there any way around this?

Does anyone know how to draw tabs control like in IE9 or Firefox 6/7 ?I know we can draw custom tabs but that's a $!$&!&' hassle to do. I thought that since the tab controls in IE9 and Firefox are almost the same, maybe there's an easier way to do so.
