File Size Dynamically Updating In A Label?
Nov 17, 2009
Using VB 2008 Express.
How would I create a label that reports a file size at all times? Or, on a regular basis, say every 10 seconds or so.
In my form, I want a label to watch certain file sizes (logs, etc.) in case one suddenly becomes too big.
It is easy enough to report a static file size when a form launches, but changing it dynamically...I don't know how to do that yet.
The following example is generic and simplified for illustration purposes.
The file is C:Applicationapplication.log
The label might include:
("The application.log file is {0} bytes.",GetFileInfo.Length)
or something like that. But that would report a file size once and never again unless I quit and restart the form.
If any .NET concept is used, can you provide a link to the documentation or msdn stuff?

I have a label which appears full screen on a projector (VGA 2). In this label I will be sending strings. Some one liner's, some wrapped paragraphs. Some multi-line with carrage returns. My goal is to have the font dynamically change size to be as large as possible without overflowing the fixed label size.

Im trying to resize a picturebox dynamically using .size.height and .size.width Its not working. This is the error message: "Expression is a value and therefore cannot be the target of an assignment." Never used height and width before. Been trying to find the answer, but it seems beyond me. Im sure its easy. Anyone know whats wrong with this?

I have been using vb6 for a while, I am following a tutorial by MS to develop a basic application and a simple task cannot be completed for whatever reasons! The tutorial asks to drag the label object from the toolbox and drop in the tab control container. Then, go to the label size property and adjust the size to some different dimansion. Basic stuff, right? It won't let me do it! After I enter the new dimensions (which by the way are not large or very small), the label size (both width and height) resets back to its original dimensions! I have the vb.net sp1 installed.

With the following example of code, whenever the user clicks a menu item it will load up a new form. This form will then read from a database, and create text boxes throughout.
Private Sub allowances_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
If mainMenu.currentSlic.ToString = "0" Then

rftOutput.FontSize = vsbBar.Value
rftFontHeight.Caption = vsbBar.Value

Greetings, I'm sure there's a simple solution to my question, but I haven't figured it out yet. I have a Form with 12 Label objects L1-L12. I'm trying to set the ".Text" values of those label objects with the values of the fields in a Database table,,, Here's what I have. It DOES NOT get errors. But it doesn't work either.

What I am trying to do is update a label with a value from a sql table using a combobox.this is a record from the table concerned
Species_ID (PrimaryKey) | Species | Genus_ID | Avg_Length | Avg_Height | Est_Weight | Diet_ID
1 rex 1
46 18 14000
1
On my form I have a combo box that is bound to this table with Species_ID as the Value Member. When I select a value from the combo box I want to update 3 labels with data from the Species_ID row corresponding to that value.

I have Data coming in through a serial port and it consists of pretty much all numerical values except for a few begining response characters. Its a Load Cell which spits out Tension in Pounds. I'm making a simple terminal program with the ability to log the Incoming Data for record keeping and data plotting. I want the incoming Tension to be displayed on the screen real time.I can get it into a text box and have it scroll indefinetly as it updates the data,but I'd like to keep it localized in one Label. I can display it in the Label but it wants to scroll down as it comes in. I want to keep it refreshed in one spot if that makes any sense. Heres what I have thus far. It will put it in the Label but wants to scroll like in the textbox. For example if I send #00F0 followed by a carriage return it replys back with whatever is displayed on the Screen which usually is the tension.it says "01TK 00.074 LBS" no quotes.. for a reply.I'm assuming it needs to be stripped down to just the numeric characters first.'here is what gets sent to the Load Cell to tell it to output data fast as it can to the serial port.[code]

i can grab the value of an item from a datagridview but i cannot change a label with that value. don't know why it ain't working.this works, the msgbox displays the value i click.
Private Sub DataGridView1_CellContentClick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewCellEventArgs) Handles DataGridView1.CellContentClick
Dim row As Integer = DataGridView1.CurrentCell.RowIndex
[code]....
but this does not work, the label does not get updated.
label23.text = DataGridView1.Item(column, row).Value
could it be because that label is on another tab from the DGV? should i reference the other tab?i tried TabPage2.label23.text = DataGridView1.Item(column, row).Value but of course it's not working.

I've been working at this for hours, and I'm completely stumped. There may be a more elegant way to do what I want, but I can't find it in my reference books or online. I have a form that has 64 labels corresponding to 64 unique locations on a map. Each of the labels contains one character, a ●. The program determines, randomly, if these is something in those locations.'m using a For... next loop to step through each location and determine if there is something there.My question is how do I turn off the label in the form without resorting to some 64 choice Select Case statement (or something similar).

I have a label on my form and I want it to be a certain size, never changing, regardless of content. In the label properties, I've tried setting auto-size to false, setting the minimum and maximum size to the size I want, and setting lock to true. When I update the label's content via my code, it still changes the size of the label.

I'm programatically creating labels in programatically-created panels, and have run into an issue--the label's information isn't completely showing! COnsistently only the first few characters are consistently displayed. I've tried bringtofront, but it doesn't work at all. And the characters stop well short of the panel barrier--does anyone know what to do about this? I used messagebox.show(labelname.text) to make sure it wasn't working properly, and sure enough all the characters I want are in the label, but aren't appearing.

Is there a way to change label text at run time?. I don't want to annoy users with popup. So planning to display error in a label if its text could be changed.
So far I have included a Main Form which has a label lblErrorFeedback which is not visible initially and I have done this but does not work.
lblErrorFeedback.Visible = True
lblErrorFeedback.Text = ""
lblErrorFeedback.TextAlign = ContentAlignment.MiddleRight
lblErrorFeedback.Text = "Error Occured"
Is there a better way to show the error with out popups?

I have several group boxes on a winform. within each there are several labels.I am accessing the group boxes with no issues but I can't seem to find a way to update the labels within by looping. They have the same name except the last character which is a number 1 - 9. ex. lbl1, lbl2 ... lbl9.I need to update the text of each label in code with text I get from a database ex. lbl1.text = one, lbl2.text = two etc... I want to loop through the labels to assign the text. Getting text from database is no issue what I am not doing properly is getting the labels.
do while QstNum < 10
Dim ln As New Label
ln.Name = "SC_Cat" & QstNum

I have a datagrid where the first column is for image button for expand purpose. The visibility of the image depends on some conditions row by row. I am trying to handle this in ItemDataBound event, and using e.item.cell(0).findcontrol("imageButton").visible = false. The first cell of this row therefore disappears even that the size is specified in the ItemStyle tag.

I've been programming in vb.NET for a whileAnd to be honest, its turning out to be a real pain.Here is the
Form1.vb: Imports System.Threading
Public Class Form1
Dim trd As Thread[code].....
So, I have a form (form1) with a label on, this label simply reports the status of the thread.The thread begins the Class1.Main() sub, and I have a delegate setup to change the text propoerty of the label.Now,I know the label is created on the UI thread,so I assumed the delegate would work. However,it seems that it updates the .text property, but doesnt redraw the control when .Update() is called .What am I doing wrong?I have found lots of examples of delegates, but all run from within the same class. I want to use threads too, not a backgroundworker! This code is a "simplified" version of a project I am on, which is encountering the same problems

I have a label in my Form which on loading, displays the contents of a text file. The contents of the text file may change and if so, the number of lines also will. I would like the Form to automatically resize itself based on the number of lines in the file. If there are more lines that the size of the label can take, I would like it to either resize or show scroll bars.

I know it should be possible to do this, I'm not too sure where to start.
