Updating A Label With A Value From A Sql Database?
Nov 1, 2011What I am trying to do is update a label with a value from a sql table using a combobox.this is a record from the table concerned
Species_ID (PrimaryKey) | Species | Genus_ID | Avg_Length | Avg_Height | Est_Weight | Diet_ID

On my form I have a combo box that is bound to this table with Species_ID as the Value Member. When I select a value from the combo box I want to update 3 labels with data from the Species_ID row corresponding to that value.
Updating A Label With Data
Mar 11, 2010I have Data coming in through a serial port and it consists of pretty much all numerical values except for a few begining response characters. Its a Load Cell which spits out Tension in Pounds. I'm making a simple terminal program with the ability to log the Incoming Data for record keeping and data plotting. I want the incoming Tension to be displayed on the screen real time.I can get it into a text box and have it scroll indefinetly as it updates the data,but I'd like to keep it localized in one Label. I can display it in the Label but it wants to scroll down as it comes in. I want to keep it refreshed in one spot if that makes any sense. Heres what I have thus far. It will put it in the Label but wants to scroll like in the textbox. For example if I send #00F0 followed by a carriage return it replys back with whatever is displayed on the Screen which usually is the tension.it says "01TK 00.074 LBS" no quotes.. for a reply.I'm assuming it needs to be stripped down to just the numeric characters first.'here is what gets sent to the Load Cell to tell it to output data fast as it can to the serial port.[code]

File Size Dynamically Updating In A Label?

How would I create a label that reports a file size at all times? Or, on a regular basis, say every 10 seconds or so.
In my form, I want a label to watch certain file sizes (logs, etc.) in case one suddenly becomes too big.
It is easy enough to report a static file size when a form launches, but changing it dynamically...I don't know how to do that yet.
The following example is generic and simplified for illustration purposes.
The file is C:Applicationapplication.log
The label might include:
("The application.log file is {0} bytes.",GetFileInfo.Length)
or something like that. But that would report a file size once and never again unless I quit and restart the form.
If any .NET concept is used, can you provide a link to the documentation or msdn stuff?

So, I have a form (form1) with a label on, this label simply reports the status of the thread.The thread begins the Class1.Main() sub, and I have a delegate setup to change the text propoerty of the label.Now,I know the label is created on the UI thread,so I assumed the delegate would work. However,it seems that it updates the .text property, but doesnt redraw the control when .Update() is called .What am I doing wrong?I have found lots of examples of delegates, but all run from within the same class. I want to use threads too, not a backgroundworker! This code is a "simplified" version of a project I am on, which is encountering the same problems

Jan 25, 2012I have a webpage with a form that is used to edit some object. This object contains a Collection of other objects defined like this: Public Overridable Property Employees As List(Of Employee)
On a form I can delete an employee, add a new one or modify existing one. When I click save new values are sent to the server. On a server I check if the user exists. If exists then I modify its values, if it does not exist then I add it. All employees that exist on the server and were not sent are marked as deleted (State changed to EntityState.Deleted). I try to use the following code (dbCollection = database entities, newCollection = collection sent from the form):

This code does not work, because changing to EntityState.Deleted removes the object from collection, and for each loop breaks, since the collection is modified...I know that I can overcome this problem by using a for loop or adding objects to delete to some other list first, but I hope maybe there is a pattern that would make my code nicer.

Feb 4, 2007I have been using vb6 for a while, I am following a tutorial by MS to develop a basic application and a simple task cannot be completed for whatever reasons! The tutorial asks to drag the label object from the toolbox and drop in the tab control container. Then, go to the label size property and adjust the size to some different dimansion. Basic stuff, right? It won't let me do it! After I enter the new dimensions (which by the way are not large or very small), the label size (both width and height) resets back to its original dimensions! I have the vb.net sp1 installed.

I want to fire some events from the background worker thread to the 'main thread' of the class, so that when using this class your not obliged to go make invoke calls for every event handler your using.I'm at a loss of how to do this though. When having a similar problem in a form of usercontrol I always use Me.Invoke, but this method is not present in a class inheriting system.object.

Mar 1, 2011I have a screen that checks for alerts every 30 seconds by looking up outstanding issues from a database.When there is an alert, an audio file is played depending on the alert.It takes 1-2 seconds to grab this audio file which caused an issue with global screen freezing, so I added multithreading where it plays the sound file. Aug 22, 2010I have read many articles on multithreading over the past few days and so far I'm fairly comfortable with how it works. I am now working on my actual application, and have come across a few design issues that I'm hoping somebody has experience with.The basic premise of the application is simple. A database filled with files names and a "converted" field that has a 1 or a 2 in it (1 for unconverted, 2 for converted). The application loops through every record where "converted" = 1, retrieve the file and convert it.
My single threaded application works fine, except its far too slow. Due to the huge amount of rows in the database (4 million+) and the time constraints on the project, I have decided to run as many threads as the hardware can allow to cut down on the timings.So, the dilemma is accessing database records and which threads should grab which record and how.
Multithreading With Same Procedures?
Nov 23, 2011I have a function in my program that adjust sales for multiple days. Sometimes it needs to adjust up to 3 months and the tasks takes a while so I decided to split up the work between multiple threads. The way I have it working is say I need to adjust 3 months. I have the first thread adjust sales for the 1st month, the second thread adjust sales for the 2nd month and finally a third thread that will adjust sales for the 3rd month. Since all three threads are performing the same tasks except for different date range they use the same procedures. Within those procedures I make a call to the database to extract the sales for the given month. At some point it seems like the threads start to use the same SQL Data Objects because I am receiving the below error."There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command which must be closed first."Below is the first procedure that is ran by each thread up to the line where it errors out.

So all three threads call this subroutine and the first thread does the data fill with no issues and then sometimes even the second thread does the data fill with no issue but then the third thread crashes and produces the above error. It seems as though the threads are sharing the same SQL Objects when all objects are local to the sub and I always thought each thread had it's own memory to work with. So I thought each thread would call the sub create it's own objects in memory, but that does not seem like what it's doing. I have other multithreading processes in my application that work perfectly fine, this is the first time I am attempting to multithread in this manner where I am using the same procedure within multiple threads.
Just thought of something that I might be doing wrong. The subroutine in question is in the same class where the threads are created. Should the subroutine be in it's own class, and therefore each instantiation of that class?
Use Multithreading With VB 2005?
Nov 13, 2009I try to use Multithreading with VB 2005. I added a Listbox to main form and i tried to fill ListBox with 2 threads. When i executed code it told me that this is unsafety operation becasuse of ListBox is created with Main(Form1) form.
Is there anybody who has such simple multithreading example with Mutex or such lock mechanism?
