I am trying to filter a dataset using input from a textbox. I would like this to happen on a button's click event. I am familiar with connecting to a database using an adapter but I have never tried to have VS make the connection for me and display results in a datagrid view. I have tried google'ing this numerous ways and tried numerous attempts to code this to no avail.

I am going out to the database, gathering the requested information and filling the dataset. Therefore, everytime I add a query to a table adapter, it is also going to the database to get the information. So, my question is, how do I fill a table in a data set with all the records in the database table and then, filter the information I've already collected in the dataset without going back out to the database again?
The following code works (rows are filtered by the select expression), but then all the controls in the datarepeater are empty. When set to .DefaultView all records return and all controls have their values.

I'm writing an app for someone where I am pulling in work orders table information. The information includes: worknum, fname, lname, customername, description, etc. I do not plan to update the data in this table, only to read from it.I'd like to display a combo box for the work order numbers. The user would start typing the information for the work order in and it would autocomplete based on what's in the list. As work orders are displayed in the combo box, I want to update the data in text boxes representing the various fields.
I'm thinking rather than query the database several times, it would be a good idea to create a DataSet with information for the work orders table within the last x months then query the data from that dataset. I know there is a DataSet.Select method, but it looks like it returns the entire row. Is it possible to retrieve just a column of distinct values? For example, I'd like to do a select statement similar to this:
SELECT worknum FROM {WorkOrderDataSet} WHERE date >'{today-x}
The first part in curly brackets is meant to represent the work order dataset I create when first importing the data from Access. The second part in curly brackets will be replaced with variable data to represent a date to reference. I also don't think I'll need distinct because the workorder is unique (edit: is a primary key)Is it possible to retrieve just a column of distinct values from a DataSet with multiple columns? I create a dataset and configure the query builder and in the filter i key in this "?" and when I search the name by enter the full name it will show but what I want is just type "A" and it will show the whole name starting with A. View 9 RepliesI build xml in memory from the file, separate that into nodes for binding to different grids, works fine except the dataset is missing two tables and I can't find out why, the code below uses a stream but I've tried a ton of stuff by now, and, just using ds.ReadXml(path) doesn't work to get the proper nodes and drops all but the first major node: vs2008/vb.net project.
I believe what's going on is that the nodes have attributes ... none of the nodes that do come through have them, the "author" and "entrydate" nodes are being dropped from the string:

I had an Excel spreadsheet which I put in MS Access (database). I then took that database and used that as a source in VB to create a GUI for. In VB I have an input text box to search and pull of different fields. I created some queries for searches in from the text box. I have have a dataset view of the data which has the binding navigator (add, insert, save).
The problem I have is that when I hit the '+' for add to add information and then click the 'save' button in the binding Navigator, the information I put in does not save. I check this by exit out of the program run (debug to open the app) and then open it back up to search and/or check for the new information I put in. My overall goal is to create to publish the final code and use an a standalone program.
Also, as another option,(I would like to learn) Is there a way to map VB directly to an Excel file to have the user input information and save to the excel file.
