Tell If A DataSet Or DataRow Is Empty?
Feb 23, 2012After much convincing by other people, I have finally started trying to use ADO.NET instead of ADODB. Unfortunately, my lack of knowledge regarding these objects has left me broken in one area. I tried converting the area where I am checking for duplicate records to use ADO.NET by checking if a student filling out a form enters the same first name, last name, and program or major as another record in the database as per my instructions. Unfortunately, in the following code snippet, it is not behaving how I thought it should and I am unable to diagnose exactly where the problem might be just yet.

Therefore, everytime I add a query to a table adapter, it is also going to the database to get the information. So, my question is, how do I fill a table in a data set with all the records in the database table and then, filter the information I've already collected in the dataset without going back out to the database again?

Select Column With Filter Criteria Within A Row In A .Net DataSet?
Jul 27, 2011I'm writing an app for someone where I am pulling in work orders table information. The information includes: worknum, fname, lname, customername, description, etc. I do not plan to update the data in this table, only to read from it.I'd like to display a combo box for the work order numbers. The user would start typing the information for the work order in and it would autocomplete based on what's in the list. As work orders are displayed in the combo box, I want to update the data in text boxes representing the various fields.
I'm thinking rather than query the database several times, it would be a good idea to create a DataSet with information for the work orders table within the last x months then query the data from that dataset. I know there is a DataSet.Select method, but it looks like it returns the entire row. Is it possible to retrieve just a column of distinct values? For example, I'd like to do a select statement similar to this:
SELECT worknum FROM {WorkOrderDataSet} WHERE date >'{today-x}
The first part in curly brackets is meant to represent the work order dataset I create when first importing the data from Access. The second part in curly brackets will be replaced with variable data to represent a date to reference. I also don't think I'll need distinct because the workorder is unique (edit: is a primary key)Is it possible to retrieve just a column of distinct values from a DataSet with multiple columns? How do I do this?

I have all the text base rowfilters working, but I can not make the date filter work unless I hard code the datetime into the code. The database is MS Access and I am using VB2008 to show the data. I would like to be able to use a DateTimePicker to set the filter date (without the time part) Also I would need to remove the time section of the datEnterDate. I cannot change the structure of the database fields. Also the datEnterDate is MM/dd/yyyy, because I'm in England I would like to use the format of dd/MM/yyyy if possible

Updating A Datarow With Another Datarow?
Apr 28, 2010I have two datatables with similar structures that I want to make one existing row to be updated from another datatable.
For example, "tableA" has three columns: "one", "two", and "three"; with "one" being the primary key...
and "tableB" has three columns as well: "one", "two", and "three"; with "one" being the primary key.
Say there is a row on tableA that is different than a row on tableB (with a matching primary key). What I wanted to do, as efficiently as possible, is to take the that row from tableB and replace the one on tableA so it'll be modified.
I'm not sure if there's an easier way of doing that instead of using loops for setting the row's items.

The issue is in the last line. ID_Part is an Int64 data type filters(0) is a string so the system returns a "Can't perform 'Like' operation on System.Int64 and System.String" error message.As you can see I tried converting the data type, but that failed since it is encased in String.Format()- it's going to be a string no matter what, I suppose.It's almost 1:00 a.m. so I'm not firing on all cylinders.

Set The Value Of The Dtp From A Datarow?
Mar 16, 2011I have a form with a datetimepicker. On load of the form, I set the value of the dtp from a datarow, with the following vb.net dtpRequiredDate.Value = dr.Item("RequiredDate")
This works fine. But when the form is loaded subsequent times in the session (form is not disposed on closing, shown as dialog), when presented to the user it just shows todays date, not that set by the above code. Stepping through code, the Onload code runs, and the dtp is set by the above code. Checking the value in debug at this point, the value of the dtp is correct. There is no further code in onload. But by the time it is displayed to the user shows todays date again. I have set a break point on the valuechanged of the dtp but it never fires again after it has been set by the above code.

Adding A New Datarow?
Mar 14, 2011I am trying to add new operators (their name, category, password etc) to a dataset called "operators". (Though I could be adding any new datarow to it's relevent dataset). My program has allowed for the entry of all relevent data and filtered it to make sure it is acceptable. The user has pressed the UPDATE button and my program must now add the new datarow. (My code is in bold!).
I assume that I must first establish a connection to my database, so I start with :-

Apr 19, 2012I have a master DataTable that may contain some DataRow.RowError. I create multiple subset DataTables from my master DataTable using the DataView.ToTable method whenever the user wants to apply a filter or sort to the master table. However, the ToTable method does not transfer the RowError property of the data rows in the master table to my new subset table. So in order for me to transfer the row errors from my master table to my subset table I have to use a loop. The code below works fine, but with one exception (see below code).
