Query - Find All Records In A Table In Which A User Enters A Search Word
Nov 22, 2010I need to do a query in which I can find all records in a table in which a user enters a search word. The word to be searched for will be a word in a column. If there's a table named solutions and in the table there is a field named description; i need to be able to pull up all records where for example the search word is 'printer' is in the description column. I don't have any code or database structure to show. I first need to know if this can be done. Can someone supply a code snippet example or tell me what SQL keywords will do this, or some pointer?

Apr 20, 2010I want to iterate through the records in an SQLCompact 3.5 data table and combine the field values into a string.The database file is connected to the project.I created a dataset that contains the tables from the database.If I drag and drop any datasource table as a grid onto a form I can view the data.[code]I have tried using the tableadapter.Ran into errors when the Date2 value = DBNull, never could get around those.I've tried dataview and datareader on the dataset.datatable but never could get these to load any data rows.I could sure use an uncomplicated unconvoluted way to simply read the rows of data in a database datatable.

I need to search for a particular city and have it display the city name and the other three columns of data for that row in particular text boxes. Here is my code...it is the last sub routine that is the problem...I'm tying myself in noob-ish knots trying to figure out nested loops etc to search... (I've commented some of it out whilst I tried to figure it out but I'm running out of time and patience and my knowledge of VB is limited!!)

and when I get data from the event table I use the SQL query statement below to bind the persons first and last names together as one variable called "name" and then bind that name to the respective user_id; and so on. However when I make changes to the event table it doesn't show the changes I've made. I'm certain it has something to do with the way I'm retrieving the data.

Run A SQL Statement To UPDATE A Column In A Table With New Data?
Apr 27, 2012Attempting to run an SQL statement to UPDATE a column in a table with new data. The column being updated is defined as varchar(40) and the new data is 41 bytes (varchar(41)). I get a generic 'data will be truncated' error message, but no detail on which column caused the problem. I've attached a sample VB program to illustrate the issue. In this scenario, Company is defined as varchar(40).
My question: Can I get a more detailed error message? i.e. can I get an error message that tells me the row and column that the truncation occurs in? Often times, I may be updating hundreds or thousands of rows and only one value in one column from the source file is too large for a database cell. As a related question, does each OLEDB provider create its own error messages. i.e. will the MS SQL Server OLEDB provider potentially give different text in the error message than say the MS Jet OLEDB provider?

Creating A Condition - IF Statement Which Is Checking Each Row In The Data Table
May 4, 2011I have a IF statement which is checking each row in the data table (for a match) and ELSE statement with commands which are executed if the If statement is not satisfied. Now I would like to write like so that it goes to the Else part BUT ONLY for values which are not satisfied in the IF statement. If I am more specific; I would like to calculate values if a match is found and just print them if it is not fond (usually there are both cases). Now the problem is the bold text; if there is a match found I don't want it processed BUT if the match is found I do. How can I write that?

VS 2010 Records In Table Are Determined By Records In Another Table?
Apr 22, 2012I have a database with 3 tables: Student, Unavailability and Duty.The fields for Student are entered in a form I have. One of the fields in Unavailability is filled by a form, the other fields are an autonumber and a foreign key to the Student table.ow I want records in the Duty table to be created and automatically filled in depending on what the values of the fields are in the Student table.For example, If the Boarder field in the Student table is 'yes' then I want the Duty Number field in the Duty table to be '1', '3' and '4'. If it is 'no' then I want the value to be '2' and '5'. I recognize it will have to create several different records to incorporate the different duty numbers for each StudentID. Obviously this will require an if statement, however this is my first time implementing a database with my limited experience with programming and Visual Basic, so I don't know how to refer to the specific fields in a table and set the value of other fields depending on the data in other fields.

Mar 21, 2009I'm trying to run an INSERT statement to pass data from a datagrid to a table I have on my database. The problem I have is that the table has 6 columns and the datagrid has only 3. So I only want to pass those 3 columns but I get the error that the other 3 columns does not accept null values. I need to change the columns to accept null values. The other problem it is that I can't pass more than 9 records, if I have more than 9 record on the DataGrid it says "object not set as an instance of a reference" and it only add 9 records if I have more than 9.

Find Missing Data From Table
May 12, 2010what is the fasted way to get all the rows from table1 that aren't in table2? i have over 4000 rows in table1, i am currently looping through using:
for each dr as datarow in dt1.rows
then i check table2 to see if that entry exists using:
dim rows() as datarow = dt2.select("EmployeID = " & dr!EmployeeID)
if rows.length > 0 then it exists in both tables - dont need it
other wise i copy the row into a third table which ends up being my final collection of rows that are in table1 and not in table2. this takes a really long time. is there a better, faster way that isn't too complicated?

Jun 12, 2011I have a problem finding strings that do not exist in a column in a database. I am going to use linq but its more the 'way' of doing I am concerned with.
I have strings like;
MEAL
GPST
EXLEG
EXLG ...etc
I need to find records that does not have this list of strings in, so for example DBML BUT sometimes I can have the string MEALDBML, or more concatenated. So this is a known string of MEAL and unknown string of DBML. I would then want to see that record. I do not know the unknown strings up front, so its a case of feeding in the strings I know are ok, and finding one that are outside that list. I was also thinking of regex?
