Forms :: DataGridView: Slow And Uses >1GB Memory - Can It Be Optimized
Jun 22, 2011
The following snip of simple code runs pretty slow on my computer, and I suspect that it is due to excessive memory usage, since the program reports using >1GB mem according to TaskManager. Am I using the DataGridView in a wrong way? Instructions: Make a windowsforms application and put 2x button and 1xDataGridView on it. Push button1 and then button2 - sort the data in the DataGridView by a different col and push button2 again. It'll go above 1GB mem usage! Basically I need to display a lot of data to a user and allow the user to sort the data and generate something from them.
Public Class Form1
Public dt As DataTable
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

The DateTimePicker seems to be behaving irrationally. I have a normal form in VB2005. The datetimepicker value is set on entry to 01 March 2009. I set the value to 01 January 2009 by typing 1 in the 'March' area. I then use a keyboard shortcut to click a command button, eg. Alt-I. I noticed the DateTimePicker was late to update as the command button sequence started at 1 March 2009, not 1 January 2009. So I inserted the following line of HTML

I'm using a DataGridView to load data from a DataTable. This DataGridView is located on a tab (Forms.TabPage). When clicking this tab the datagrid takes a second or two to draw from the top down, regardless of wheather data is being loaded or not. Is there anything I can do to speed up the DrawingRendering when clicking the Tab?I Don't think the actual population of the DGV is causing this, as it's filled during form load so by the time the tabs click it would have loaded the few rows (20 - 30) it displays.

Using cmd As SqlCommand = cn.CreateCommand()

I've got a pretty big datagridview that I have to populate, and it's already (with not loads of data) taking quite a long time to populate. I can't imagine it's possible in my situation to bind the datagridview to the data I want to populate, but here is the situation.
I want the column headers along the top to be a bunch of users, which I have in one data table. I want the row headers along the side to be skill names, whihc I have in another data table, and the data in the middle is the score of each user for each skill in data table 3. Some users don't have a score, some do.
The way I have achieved this at present is to create the columns first using data table 1, then for each skill (data table 2), create an array of rows from data table 3 that match the skill, find the matching user (ColumnIndex) for each of these rows, and fill in the score.

Whenever I decide to make a utility in VB.NET, I always end up writing a class like this one. I'm using it in an Explorer-like listview, and while I know it works, I have no idea (or experience) with coding for minimal overhead, speed, and precision. So I would like to know what I can do to optimize it.

A DataGridView in my VB.NET 2008 program contains over 15,000 rows. I loop through the rows, totalling groups of rows and appending 'total rows' and one 'Final total row' to the DataGridView. That works fine. I want to initially hide all rows except for the total rows, giving the user the option to show all 'detail' rows. If i place the statement << dgvTitleCounts.Rows(intRow).Visible = False >> in the loop, execution time increases by three minutes and that is unacceptable.
I see two options: (1) find a faster way of making all rows invisible; and (2) place the total rows in a separate DataSet and bound DataGridView.

The problem is increase in value on pressing button is very slow. i mean if i press button quickly the value should increase quickly but its the same slow pace for increasing or decreasing value on pressing button.

In debug mode I get into a line that evaluates to false because the expression cannot be evaluated because of "Cannot evaluate expression because the code of the current method is optimized." Program does not assert or error out. If Item.Length then . . . (Here when I hover the mouse it displays "Cannot evaluate expression because the code of the current method is optimized"). What interesting is that it only occurs in one of .vb files.BTW, I'm programming in Compact Framework.

I refresh a DataGridView every second. It has about 50 rows. This ends up using the entire memory of the computer in about 1 day. I wanted to see what recommendations you had to clear up this memory leak.
The DataGridView1 is bound to a DataTable.

Do visual basic forms each run in separate memory and if not is there a way that I can force them to do so. I want them to be in separate memory so that if one form freezes the entire program won't.

My application has 1 main form and three other forms which raise events to my main form. I noticed that the memory starts at 77,000 K and increases substationally over a few hours maby be to 250,000k and ever increases. The main form has a dataset and a bound datagridview which gets refreshed with data. Basically it's a taxi booking application. The booking form raises an event to the main form and the main form refreshes the jobs and displays them on the dgv.

Using VS Express 2008 and .NET2.0.
I have a DataGridView which has as its .DataSource a BindingSource, which in turn has its .DataSource set to a BindingList<> which contains some classes. All works well, and I potentially have a list of several thousand items, and hence several thousand rows on the grid. When I wish to disconnect binding, clear the list and hence clear the grid, I am setting the grid DataSource property to Nothing, and calling .Clear in the BindingSource.
However, it appears that when I do this, the memory usage (Private bytes) does not reduce until TWO full GC's occur. (Both metrics checked with PerfMon.) I can only surmise that the original row instances in the grid are hanging around and making it on to the Finalizer queue perhaps?
Is there anything I can do about this, or is it expected behaviour? I'm not sure if setting the DataSource property to Nothing is enough to 'purge' the grid properly. Using Reflector, I notice that DataGridViewRow inherits Dispose from it's base class, so do I have to call this somehow, or should the act of unbinding do this automatically? (The classes in the list are purely managed, and have nothing that requires Dispose calling on them.)

I have an application putting new data into a database so I want to use a DataGridView to display the data. I have a timer triggering every 5 seconds and running this UpdateGridFromDatabase() routine every cycle.
It works, but I can see my application memory usage going up by 10kB every 5 seconds until my computer with 6GB of RAm & 64 bit Windows 7 grinds to a halt! Can anyone see at a glance what I am doing wrong? I am trying to open & close everything as necessary. I have also dimmed two variables outside - I had then inside previously and it didn't make any difference.

Simple question that does not seem to be covered: If I use a lot of Debug.WriteLine statements in my code, will they be completely absent in my production version?
I mean: Is the compiler smart enough to not emit any code for those calls? Or would I have to surround them by #if DEBUG..#end if directives?

Im getting a problem with one of my programs I have made in visual basic.NET where it gives me a memory error when i debug the program in the IDE. the exact error is this: "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt". My program basically has a few forms with text fields on that get their text values from an access database on the same hard drive. Im wondering if im doing something wrong because my program just seems to eat up memory whenever it does anything. For example I have one form that has a combobox on it and when you change the drop down list selection it retreives a few strings from the database and puts them into the relevant text boxes, if you keep changing the selection then the memory usage (in task manager) just keeps going up and up. occasionally I get the error mentioned above when debugging but in my built version of the program it throws an exception everytime the memory usage gets past 49K.
Also I noticed when debugging in the "immediate window" frame I get the following message often:A first chance exception of type 'System. Invalid OperationException' occurred in System.Data.dll...Do I need to somehow be "releasing" the memory that is used to gather data once it becomes redundant?

I have a BackgroundWorker object that I instantiated to perform a DB process on a background thread ansynchronously. I have event handlers for DoWork and RunWorkerCompleted. I can tell that the BackgroundWorker is disposing of itself because I added a message box into the Disposed event handler. Is it necessary to detach the event handlers to ensure that the memory is cleaned up and that there are not memory leaks?

I've noticed that every time I start a new thread in my program, the memory usage jumps about 1000k and it never goes back down. I have ensured that the thread is no longer running, and only one instance of my worker thread is ever running at a time. I am using ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem and ASyncOperation to get stuff done. The program starts using a Sub Main in a module that uses STAThread; I read that using STAThread instead of MTAThread makes it impossible for the Garbage Collector to get in and consider objects for garbage collection. However, when I change the STAThread to an MTAThread, the WebBrowser control in my frmMain cannot be instantiated.
I get this exception:
Code: An unhandled exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadStateException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll
Additional information: ActiveX control '8856f961-340a-11d0-a96b-00c04fd705a2' cannot be instantiated because the current thread is not in a single-threaded apartment. I do threading with the WebBrowser control, so will using MTAThread fix my problem? If so, how should I partition my code so that the WebBrowser control won't be affected by the above exception? I call the thread repeatedly with a timer (although only one instance ever runs at a time), and my program's memory usage starts at about 5000k and can jump to 300,000k+ depending on many times the thread needs to be called.

I cannot use Visual Basic 2008 at all. When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1.
When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.
I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.
Here is the programs I have installed:
Operating system: Windows XP
Microsoft .net framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET framwork 1.1 Hotfix(KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
