i'm Using net 4.0 & i'm learning parallel programming ,i'm using parallel.invoke to run 2 or more methods with together at a same time but i want to update my UI ( listboxes ) while i'm running methods . i can do that with threads & delegates , but now i can't do that , this code is running well
[code]...
i dont know why me.invoke or listbox1.invoke wont work with parallel.invoke !
I'm trying to sleep a single thread of code, when i try using System.Threading.Thread, it freezes the whole app, i need it to just freeze a portion of code.
I've run into a bit of a problem.. I am unsure as to how many people know how "IRC" Servers work here but basically, i'll explain. We are re-creating an IRC Client we made for our Chat site in VB.NET originally vb6. We have serveral different forms but the main problme we are having at the moment is FrmMain is where you login to the servers, it grabs your data from our MySQL database such as "Nick, Gender, Font" etc. Then proceeds with connection to IRC server on Raw 001 we know the connection to the IRC server has been established... so therefore we open up FrmAuth which in this case they can see roomlist etc. We are unable to get FrmAuth to load probably.
We originally had this working opening up FrmAuth before the connection to IRC server has been established.. This really is no good for us causes alot of errors etc. So when we use just simply "me.show()" the form loads but freezes we tried doing Me.Invoke(New Del(AddressOf me.show))
however, this didnt work in which I assume that is because the "FrmAuth" hasn't yet loaded the GUI thread therefore there is no Thread to invoke so we tried FrmMain.Invoke(New Del(AddressOf me.show))
This didn't work either i assume you cannot access another forms Invoke method? we are receiving the error A first chance exception of type.'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll which i assume has something to do with it but not quite sure..
So my question comes down to the fact of, how do we open up FrmAuth without it freezing? Is there a way to access the invoke method on another form?
The problem is that, when I call the "SetStatusBarText" sub from another thread, InvokeRequired is True (as it should be), but then my threads stall on the Me.Invoke statement - pausing execution shows them all just sitting there, not actually invoking anything.
I have a basic three form application. It doesn't seem to close after navigating through forms. If I were to open the application, and the main form is displayed. If I press the X button, the application closes fine(Goes from processes) If I were to open the application, and then navigate from the main form to another form using me.hide & form1.show, and press the red X on Form1, the application again, closes fine.
.NET developing and have a simple question, i've been stuck on this for a while and searched many forums first with no solution so i'm posting myself. In VB for excel i've used Screenupdating=false to disable the screen updating however now i'm creating a visual studio 2010 windows forms application and its not showing up as a property. Here's the code i've tried.
just wondering if it is possible to add a method to all forms in my project without having to do it on one form and Inherit all my other forms from that one
I'm using VB 2010 and need to multiply 2 user input numbers in forms, so basically: TextBox5 = TextBox2 * TextBox3 That obviously didn't work but it shows what I want it to do.
I'm working on a website where we'll be getting a lot of videos to be uploaded. To keep things simple and secure, I'm just writing VB.net windows app to suck all the files in a directory in, allow you to set some options, and start the encode by spawning a new FFMpeg process.
I have the requirement to create an application that has multiple front ends developed using Windows Forms, WPF, ASP and Compact Framework Mobile Forms.I would like to be able to create a series of obejct representing the business logic and have this logic accessible from the various front ends available. My first thought was to use remoting as I'd like to be able to pass the business objects back and forth between client and server but the compact framework doesn't support remoting and also transferring a full framework business object to a compact framework business object doesn't seem possible. My next thought was to use web services but again the passing of business objects seems to be very hard to accomplish. Without doing this I would have to create individual web methods for each business operation.
Finally my next option is to use sockets and write the whole client/server logic within some classes and expose them to the UI/Business layer. My only problem with this is it is not scaleable should the number of clients increase dramatically whereas using remoting or web services I can host the solution via ASP.Net.Does anybody have an ideas on the best way forward for this or even have any input on how they would write an application that required a windows form, wpf, asp website and mobile device GUI all of which want to use the same business logic?
We have an application that has a main form with a map on it. Right now the paradigm is to have forms that are displayed using menu items to display information to the user. Most of these forms are modal forms, but a couple are non-modal forms that interact with the map. For some of the forms, it really would make for a better user experience if we could dock them in the main form of the app and allow the user to see both the form and the map. For instance. We could have a list of map features in a docked window, and select one of the items on the list and have the map zoom to that feature. Or do the reverse: let the users select a map item and have a docked window that shows details of the feature. Sounds great, but I wonder about what sort of gotchas we may encounter. In particular, what if we have two windows docked at the same time? Could we get tangled up in our event code?
I would like to know if its possible to start up a second windows forms inside the parent form. Ex: A button is pressed and a new form is showed. I would like to keep that new form inside the parent form, and have it not be able to go outside the parent form.
I am writing a program for my A-level coursework But for some reason I got this build error this has never occurred to me before, I have no idea why I can't use string for the name of my form.
a program and i need to have a button put a file into a folder, i know how the button works i already have it doing some other stuff. i just don't know the code to copy and past it to a folder.
When I add a new, empty form to my VB.NET VS9 project, the linenherits System.Windows.Forms.Formis missing. What am I doing wrong here?I thought it would be added automatically.I experienced that some thing get weird if this line is not there (Form_Load is not firing, I think).
Passing data between forms without any public methods or properties on the forms. everything but the "Controller" class, which I would like you furnish. I just changed the title from "Intermediate" to "Beginner" This solution is an example of the Observer Pattern. The "Controller" class is the "observed" class, which in this case means it publishes events.
' File Definitions.vb
Public Delegate Sub MessageDelegate(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As MessageEventArgs)
Public Class MessageEventArgs : Inherits EventArgs Public Message As String
[CODE]...
The program should initially display Form1, and Form2. Clicking of the button on either form will modify the Title Text of both forms. I think that you will find the final end result to be pretty neat, as it works with any number of open forms not just two. I think asking for the Controller class is easier than asking for the code in the forms. My solution for Controller class has 7 lines of content, 9 lines if you include Class, EndClass. A minimal solution could achieved with only 4 lines of content, but it would a textbook example of bad programming.
I'm looking forward to reading and adding more to the community here. I've created a text based rpg. Next semester we are learning Visual Basic. I'm on winter break and I would like to get a head start on my learning. I've been working on creating some forms and message boxes. What is throwing me off, is that I have a good feel for doing coding so that I get functionality the will produce effects in a console. Coding the forms is a bit confusing for me. Is this something that others have run into? Is their some good primers for VB? I don't have my text books yet.
I build my first Project composed of several forms and its working just fine. Id like now to redesign the project as a MDI Application. Once created the parent form, I can create child forms but thats not what I need. What I would need is convert my already designed and working forms to MDI child forms. How can that be done?
I have no idea what I have done wrong here, so I'll just attach my project as a zip file and see if any of you are kind enough to look into it for me.I am reasonably experienced in C#.NET but having trouble using VB.NET for a school assignment.I cannot open half of my forms in designer view because "To prevent possible data loss before loading the designer, the following errors must be resolved".
I was playing a game recently and saw that they could use args in the shortcut, and I decided to try to impliment this into my application...so far, I got: (runs this sub on load)
Sub startup_args() If Environment.GetCommandLineArgs.Contains("+game") Then Dim path As Array = Environment.GetCommandLineArgs
[code]....
just to see what it returns, but the application crashes. I also tried path.tostring(), but that didn't work. When I did:
If Evnironment.GetCommandLineArgs.Contains("+game") Then Dim path as string = Environment.GetCommandLineArgs.tostring MsgBox(path)
Ive been working on this project of mine for some time now... though im not involved in IT in my current company, im just trying to help to at least have their system computerized (they are still doing it manually by paper & calculator)... I have one problem though which made me stick for 2 days (and still counting) without progress...How To Drag & Drop Between 2 Datagrids Between 2 similar MDI Child Forms
I have googled high and low to find an answer to this but I must be searching wrong.I have an application which has a listview displaying some items that are stored in a SQL Compact database. I am using a second form to add new items to this list directly into the database. When the second form closes I want to call the sub in my first form to refresh the list from the database.
How can I get it to fire the form1 sub routine on the close event of form2
i was doing a fair amount of programming many years ago, like 10 it feels like, so I'm sorely not up to date on how my newly downloaded Visual Basic Express expects me to communicate with it.I am writing a program that pulls a cell from a database after the user has gone through several forms to determine which cells they want. When I write it like that, it doesn't sound very efficient, but I've designed it this way for usability. Here's where I have a problem: Should I store the path the user takes in a string, an array, what?
Here's an example:Someone wants baseball stats and trivia. They run my program, main form pops up, they select National League button, the NL Form pops up. Now the way my program is set up right now, is there are two ListBoxes on the form, one is populated, and as the user selects a Team from ListBox1, it jumps to ListBox2. Once they've selected all the teams they want info for, they click a button Next.
What I now need the program to do is show the next form "Team: name" once for each team, and insert the name of the team on the form in the appropriate label which I'll have blank. This form will also do the Listbox thing except the first listbox will populated with Topics like HR Stats, Pitching Stats, Coach History, etc.
I know I can set IsMidContainer in forms for parent-child relationship forms. I just want to know if the parent form could be a panel. If so, how can i do it?
My question is, am I able to share a business logic layer seemlessly between the two presentation layers or is there anything I need to watch out for. I'd really like to not have any duplication of business logic, so any advice would be more than welcome.
i have a problem with trying to get 2 forms to close at different times using a timer on each of the 2 forms.
This is my form layout:
Quote: frmMain Frm1 Frm2
Frm1 and Frm2 are identical to each other. FrmMain has 2 buttons on it. One button to call Frm1 and the other to call Frm2.Frm1 and Frm2 each has a timer. It counts down to 0 and then does a .close(). However, if i pause between clicking the second button they both seem to always disappears at the same time.I would do something like this...
Click on the first button (showing the Frm1 form)
wait about 10 secs...Click on the second button (showing the Frm2 form)they both are shown on screen...hen they both disappear at the same time.... which shouldn't happen since i clicked the Frm2 box 10 seconds AFTER Frm1... So Frm1 should hide before Frm2 does...but it does not.
I have a service that scans network folders using a parallel.for method. However recently I am finding if I stop the service then while windows says the service is stopped the process is still running in task manager. However it is at 0 cpu and the memory does not change. If I try and end the task (even a force in command prompt) it just says access denied and i have to reboot the server. What would be the best way to make sure everything terminates? I thought of adding a global Boolean that in the stop procedure it turns true and part of my parallel code will check for that and call s.stop.
