Forms :: Validate The Text Property Of My Combobox
Apr 20, 2011
I have been searching for an easier way to validate the text property of my combobox.
Below is a background of what I am try to accomplish:
I have a from that contains many controls, mainly comboboxes that are bound to datatables. I have these set up in such a fashion as to when the user begins to type, the values begin to show and auto populate the combobox. This makes the selection process easier to select an actual value in the list. But, as we all know, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Users still have the ability to type something that is not in the list. I do not want to allow them to leave the combobox until the have selected or typed a valid value from the list because I am building a SQL query to retrieve data for a later form. I don't want to lose the above mentioned functionality of being able to type it in. I currently have it working as follows, but there must be a more elegant way to do this.
I first populate my combo box like so:
CODE:
The part I don't like the most is that I feel like I should be able to use the list already loaded in the combobox data, but I can't figure out how to do it. So I end up having to reload it, this seem like a waste of time.
I'm trying to concatenate nonnull multiple columns from a database into the text property of a combobox. Right now, I'm receiving an "IndexOutOfRangeException was unhandled name, address1, address2". The line in red is where the error is occurring. Here is my code for this section:[code].....
is there a flag i can call to validate the text entered in to a databound combobox?
My situation is that i have a combobox where users can type in whatever they like, but OnLeave i'd like to ensure the value in the combobox is one of the items in the data that its bound to.
i'm avoiding a listbox because the suggest/append creates a nicer interface while they are typing as it shows possible matches.
I have a question about how to validate a text box with only word inside. Below is my code i use, it's only can detect if number 1 to 9 in single number, but not 11 or 999 or Joanne11 Joa223nne etc. I want it can detect the text box have and number or symbol then will show an error messageBox, else continue.
I am new to Win Forms, I have a scenario here..When User enter ID in a textbox, I want to check that value in database and get the name for that ID before submitting the Submit Button.
I am working on a project that uses lots of custom class objects. Before starting work on real project, I tested the object behaviour on a temporary project. And find that if i add the object to a list and combobox and then make any change to the object property then it reflects in list and combobox. But after using the same process in real project the change does not reflect. Why?Also, how can i update object property placed in the combobox.
for eg. Class X has property id and name created objX of type Class X and set id=1 and name='All'
I have a form created in VB.net. It is used to get some information form a user. The form is not bound to any data source.
A combobox on this form is used to enter a cost. I want the value entered by the user to be displayed using currency format. I have used the Format String Dialog that opens from the ellipses button on the FormatString property of the combobox and selected Currency. This put C2 into the FormatString property.
When I run my application, this format is not applied to the value entered into the combobox at the time the number is entered or when I leave the combobox.
In on a section of my book about classes and properties. In this example, the author is attempting to show how you can validate a value passed to the property before setting the property. Looks like so far in this book, a couple of things have slipped past the editor, and I think this might be another one...Here's the example:
I'm having a problem with combo boxes. I usually use Java and it's been awhile since I used VB but I never remember having this much difficulty. My application is using an SDF file. From Data Sources, I drag the details on one of my Tables to my Form to get all of the fields. Three of them are comboboxes. Each of the three is an INT64 and each corresponds to a primary key in a different table. I click the tasks button on a combobox and for data source I select the appropriate table that has the data to go with the combobox, for display member I select the field that I want users to see, and for value member I select the primary key. Then I run a quick test and start the app, open the form, and add a new record. When I select a value from the combobox the selection won't validate because it doesn't think it's an INT64 like it should be. It seems to be using the display member as the actual value instead because if I change display member to the primary everything works great.
I'm rewriting a VB6 application in VB.Net. So far I have 2 forms, frmLocations (frm1) and frmLocationInfo (frm2). frmLocations has a combobox, cboLocations, from which a selection is made and an "Ok" button is clicked, which then loads frmLocationInfo. frmLocationInfo has a series of textboxes to display info corresponding to the location that was selected - Location, Location Number, Phone, Fax, Email. There are also 3 comboboxes on frmLocationInfo - cboDepot, cboFreight, and cboDispatcher. I need their text property along with items to be populated, also with data corresponding to the initial selection made on frmLocations. I'll spare you all the difficulties I'm having w/the other comboboxes, and instead focus on cboDepot. I have gotten it to populate its text property to display the corresponding Depot, however, the items are not populating and all you see now when you click on the dropdown arrow is only the depot that shows up in the text property.
Here is the code for this portion.
frmLocationInfo Private Sub FillDepotCombo() Dim sql As String = "Select distinct depot.depot_name, depot.depot_refnbr, locations.site from depot inner join locations on depot.depot_refnbr =
I'm trying to concatenate nonnull multiple columns from a database into the text property of a combobox. Right now, I'm receiving an "IndexOutOfRangeException was unhandled name, address1, address2". The line, "cboFreight.Text = drFreight("name" & ", " & "address1" & ", " & "address2")" is where the error is occurring. Here is my code for this section:
Dim drFreight As SqlDataReader = cmdCorrespFreight.ExecuteReader While drFreight.Read() 'If "address3" <> "" Then If IsDBNull(drFreight("address3")) Then
I'm trying to add validation to one of my class properties:[code]The value for the golfer's handicap comes from a oombo box on the form. Even if I have nothing set for this property at runtime, my validation doesn't work. I tried putting the If statement under Get instead of Set, and tried mHandicap = value after an Else in the If statement, but nothing seems to work. I'm working in the dark here and can't find anything suitable online. I was hoping to not go down the path of ReadOnly or WriteOnly properties as I'm not at that stage yet, but does this make a difference for my purposes here? Can anyone guide me as to what I'd need to do from this point? If I've got it right, you can add validation in the class and this means that you then don't need to repeat this validation in the form??
I know this seems like a .Net 101 question but everybody has their own way of programming and I'm curious as to what is the preferred event for checking a ComboBox when a user makes a selection?
I have 2 tables: locations and depot: Locations: site_refnbr (primary key) site_name depot_refnbr(foreign key)
[Code]...
I need to populate cboDepot's text property with the depot_name, and not the depot_refnbr that corresponds with the Location selected on frm1 from cboLocations.Frm1 has a button, and I'm not sure if I'd have to code this in the button click event, the cboLocation_Selected IndexChanged event, or in frm2's load event.
i created a validation procedure on a textbox_validating event. the procedure goes something like [Code] but somehow it doesn't stop the system from continuing. what happens is on my Save Button where i have. [Code] i'm assuming that when i click the save button, the Textbox1_Validating event is also fired since it also brings up the MessageBox. but then after pressing OK on the MessageBox, it continues to try and Update the DataTable where I get an error from the database saying that the Column does not allow null values.
also when i click Save Button, i noticed that the Textbox1_Validating Event is only fired when the cursor is on that item. basing from this, it seems that the not all Validating Events are fired when an Adapter.Update is executed. what's the best way to validate items? should it be on the Save Button and not on the Validating event of each items?
I am making a project, a database project using vb.net 2005 at front end ans sql server 2005 at back end. i have to validate my form, like for sTUDENT ID, only numbers are acceptable. that what is the way to validate it? the way which i have used is
I started editing an existing code (basicaly to learn vb) without any real previous experience. Well let's get to the point;I have a form that gathers data from db ordering by user ID (on click count).I have one DataGridView with a list of user, some have data in db, some have not. I came so far that if I CLICK on a user that have data, all data is dissplayed in 6 dinamyc textboxes. If user has no data inly first (emty) row with 6 dinamyc textboxes is created.
BUT THE POINT IS (my question to you) - I have a button that simultaneously adds a row of dinamyc textboxes bellow and multiplyies textbox04 (name is clickcount & 4) and textbox05 and displays the result in textbox06.I want to add a messagebox that shows if textbox04 & 05 are empty and in that case exits sub. Here is my code so far:
Private Sub Button1_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click 'Reset warnings[code].......
I'm doing a programming course at college, and I'm making a simple program that finds the mean of three numbers. Making the basic program was easy, but I can't work out how to validate the text boxes so that they only accept numbers. I've Googled, but I haven't been able to find anything. I have a look on the forums here but couldn't find anything either.
this is my code in VB.NET 2008 and it works as the result, i can input starts from 1.00 until 99.99
but i need more than this i want the textbox automatic validate the input as i typed in the textbox
example: i typed "1000" then the textbox will write "1,000" example: i typed "10000.99" then the textbox will write "10,000.99" nb: it has to disabled from typing ","
i wan to display the text from combobox into the textbox and clear the combobox text when click on the button. But when i select another text from the combobox and click the button, the textbox display and overwrite the previous text. How can i do so that when click, textbox display text from combobox and clear combobox text. Then click again, display the new text at 2nd line of the textbox without deleting the previous text?
I have designed a form with textboxes for numerical entry. I need to validate each textbox so the number entered is an integer, and is between 0-1000. I am struggling to find how to validate the data entry.
.NET developing and have a simple question, i've been stuck on this for a while and searched many forums first with no solution so i'm posting myself. In VB for excel i've used Screenupdating=false to disable the screen updating however now i'm creating a visual studio 2010 windows forms application and its not showing up as a property. Here's the code i've tried.
I want to make my staff id text box only accept upper case letters and not lower cases, how do i go about it?I wrote these lines but they stil dont work:
Private Sub txtStudID_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles txtStudID.KeyPress txtStudID.Text.ToUpper() End Sub
I have a form that a user inputs either A B C or D into a text box. I need to validate that one of those four letters has been entered in the text box. I am using a case statement but I think an array might work better but I can't figure out how to validate a string in an array. Or if there is a better way to use the case statement...Here is my code snippet This works, but it seems like it is the long way to do it. Also as soon as I click OK on the message box it immediatly goes and shows my next form. How do I get it validate, let the user redo, and then bring up the other form?
