Get The Handle Of A ComboBox's Edit Control

May 29, 2009

I'm inheriting a couple of the common WinForms controls and then manually repainting them so that they will correctly render over a WinForm with the Aero Glass effect enabled. I have this working well with the TextBox. I ran into a snag with the ComboBox though in that it would only repaint some of the control. I fired up MS Spy++ and saw that the ComboBox has an Edit control in it (that's not in it's control collection). I can repaint that Edit box, but I need to get the handle of it and a couple of my attempts have flopped. I found some code that used the FindWindowEx API passing the Comboboxes handle but for me it returns 0.

hwndEdit = FindWindowEx(Combo1.hwnd, 0&, vbNullString, vbNullString)

Basically, I need the handle of the edit control inside the combobox (once I understand how to correct get that then I can get the additional controls in other ones I want like the ListView). Here's the Spy++ screen shots to illustrate (from Spy++ I can see the individual handles).

Extend A DataGridView ComboBox Column's Edit Control By A Second Tiny Button?

Jul 12, 2011

I insert DataGridViewComboBoxColumn columns in a DataViewGrid. That works fine.

Now, I want the user to be able to not only select one list item, but to "drilldown" into the list that is behind the combobox, allowing him to edit (insert/delete/update) the list.

I think it would be a good idea to display a ".." button right behind the dropdown button of the combobox. Pushing it leads to a dialog where the list can be maintained.

What I am stumbling upon is:

How would I create such a custom combobox? Is ComboBox (which is the base for the combo box that the combo box column creates as its edit control) open enough to accommodate such an additional button? What would be the container of the tiny buttoon -- the ComboBox descendant? How I would make the grid create and handle such a custom combobox?

I currently try to solve this by subclassing DataGridViewComboBoxColum, using a DataGridViewComboBoxCell descendent in its CellTemplate assignment, and overriding PositionWEditingPanel and PositionEditingControl to manipulate the sizes of the panel and the combobox so I'd have space for the tiny button. Is that the correct way?

Or would I have to create a DataGridViewColumn descendant which creates a Panel containing a DataGridView combobox edit control and the tiny button? How would I make sure the column keeps care of the combo box so it has the correct items etc?

Handle Binding A Combobox With Lookup Data?

Jan 19, 2009

I'm wondering what a best practice is for handling this.I've got a standard vendor table - with VendorId (which is PK, numeric) and a field the users call SimpleId (which is usually a name - don't let the column name of SimpleId make you think it's numeric!).I've got one datatable that comes from a data adapter that looks like this. And this already changes the table in the SQL database...SqlDataAdapter("Select VendorId, SimpleId From Vendor_T", _connection)I've got this datatable on one panel of my form with a binding navigator - and you can change the SimpleId for a vendor with this.

VS 2010 - Using ComboBox To Update / Edit And View Saved Data

Apr 5, 2012

I am trying to use the combobox to update/edit/view the saved data (in contact form) from sql server.

My Load_Combobox (in contact form):
Private Sub Load_Combobox()
'Type
cboType.Items.Add("Director")
cboType.Items.Add("Principal")
cboType.Items.Add("Project Manager")
cboType.Items.Add("Technical Manager")
[Code] .....

The problem now is when I saved a record into sql server (EG Technical Manager) and try to view back the saved data, it always show the first item (Director) in combobox. But, my sql server has saved is "Technical Manager" for that saved record.

Combobox Bug - Text Typed In Combobox Appears In Another Control (textbox) On The Form?

Feb 20, 2012

I have a tab control application, each tab loads a particular user control and each of those user controls will then add other user controls that are used amongst other the user controls. For example, I have an "ucQuotes" page and an "ucInventory" page, when the specific tab is selected, the "uc****" user control is loaded on that page, and in the case of "ucQuotes" and "ucInventory" they both use a control called "ucPartNumber"; a user control consisting of a combobox, textbox, and button. I have no issues reusing the shared user controls, in this case. My problem arises with my "ucQuickPrice" control, as it is always present at the bottom of the tab control form (separate from the tabcontrol, but on the same form), and it too uses ucPartnumber.

Here's my issue, as I type into the ucPartnumber combobox, the text I type does not appear in the combobox, it appears in the textbox of the ucPartnumber control that is being used on the tabcontrol page. There are no shared instances of ucPartNumber, nor do I have this issue between typing on one tab page and the text showing on the user control of another tab page.I tried just creating the ucPartNumber controls on the ucQuickPrice control, not adding a new instance of ucPartnumber on the .Load event, and the issue persists.

The combobox(s) in question are bound programmatically with about 40,000 items, ".datasource = dataset.tablename" not to a bindingsource. Autocomplete is set to none, I added code to utilize tool tips and the basic combobox filtering functionality. Is this a bug, or is there something I'm neglecting? I'm about 95% complete with this application, and this just happened today. I made the decision, to just reuse the ucPartNumber control on the ucQuickPrice control (originallly it's size and orientation would not fit, but I added some coding to detect what parent is adding ucPartNumber and to change its appearance accordingly). Before, I made this change, I did not have this problem. And, in trying to go back to how I had things set up before the change, the problem will not go away. if the whole control within a control verbage I used is a bit confusing, let me know and I'll try to better explain what is happening. At this point, I'm going to close and reopen vbexpress, as when I started this ordeal, vb started acting weird and wanted me to save all my work, it usually does this before locking up.

C# - Populate ComboBox Edit Field With ValueMember But Show DisplayMember In The List?

Oct 12, 2011

I have an editable ComboBox with a validation on the Text property to make sure manually entered info is valid.EDIT: All I want to do is populate the .Text property with the ValueMember of a selection rather than the DisplayMember I also have the .Items populated with valid entries having the DisplayMember and ValueMember set.My DisplayMember is a caption along with the data, and the ValueMember is the data itself.So Items might be:

(DisplayMember, ValueMember)
"Foo - 1ab2" , "1ab2"
"Bar - 3cd4" , "3cd4"

I had a validation on the text which can also validate manual user input like "5ef6" The problem I'm having is that if the user selects an item from the combobox it populates the text field with the DisplayMember property (ex: "Foo - 1ab2") which will fail validation.I have tried to manually set the .Text property with the SelectedValue or the SelectedItem.Value on each of the three relevant combobox events to no avail.I would like that the .Text of the ComboBox get populated with the .ValueMember of the item when selected rather than the .DisplayMember

EDIT: I cannot validate by trying to extrapolate the value from the caption. I send the Text off to a service to be validated.

void FillMyCombo
{
KeyValuePair<string, string> listValue1 = new KeyValuePair<string, string>("Foo - 1ab2" , "1ab2")
KeyValuePair<string, string> listValue2 = new KeyValuePair<string, string>("Bar - 3cd4" , "3cd4")

[code].....

The user can manually enter something like "5ef6" which will pass validation.But when they select an item from the list, rather than manually entering it, the .Text property gets filled with the caption and not the value ... so it will contain "Foo - 1ab2" and that will fail validation. I cannot change the validation method to "infer" the value from the caption. I have no control over that service. All I'm after is the displayed value EDIT: Say a user selects "Foo - 1ab2" from the dropdown list, I want the text in the box to say "1ab2" EDIT: I have also tried to set the .Text property in code but I can't seem to make it work in any of the ComboBox events. how to programmaticly set the .Text property (and make it commit!) on a selection event they will also answer this question.

This is the cut-down version of the control:

Public Class FancyLabel

Protected Overrides Sub OnPaint(ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs)

[CODE]...

When I run the program, the GDI object count is 38. Then I open a form that has only one FancyLabel on it and the GDI object count gets increased to 42. I then close the form and the GDI count falls down to 39 and stays there no matter how many instances of the form I create and close.JV

Tab Control To Handle Child Windows In An MDI?

Nov 6, 2009

My application uses an MDI form, and there are instances where the end user will need multiple child windows open at a time. I need an easy way for the user to switch between windows, which made me think of using tabs kinda like Firefox, or like the tabs in the Visual Studio IDE up at the top where you can switch between open forms and code files.

I'm curious if there is a control in .NET that will already do this? I would rather not re-invent the wheel if I can help it. Google has failed me thus far.

Get Edit Control From Type?

Aug 4, 2010

I am retrieving some records from a database dynamically, not knowing exactly which table I need to query, or even which fields to retrieve. I display this data in a control that looks a bit like a listbox, except each item is two lines: a label and a value. Now, the user needs to be able to browse through this list until he finds the item he needs, and then he should be able to edit the item.

This application will (eventually, this is just a 'proof of concept') run on a mobile device or PDA or something like that, so space is limited. To allow the user to edit a value, I simply show a panel containing some edit control (textbox, checkboxes, combobox, etc), let the user edit whatever he's editing, save the change and display the list of items again.[code]...

C# - Control.Invoke Error: Handle Not Yet Created?

Application.Run(m_PopProcessingForm)

Display Control In .NET That Can Handle Color Codes?

Jun 12, 2011

It seems the only options available to do multi-color on a string is either a bunch of label controls cleverly grouped together or to use a RichTextBox and play with the font properties as text is added to the control.

What I am looking for instead is some kind of control that can render some style of control codes out as color. Consider bash codes:

NORMAL='e[0m'
GREEN='e[0;32m'
BLUE='e[0;34m'
echo -e "This text is ${GREEN}green${NORMAL} and this text is ${BLUE}blue${NORMAL}"

In the above, the words 'green' and 'blue' will be colorized with their respective colors. I was wondering if there was a control with some kind of feature like this, or will I have to code something myself?

Note, I only have the Express copy of VB 2010, and I would very much like to avoid third-party controls.
