I have purchased and installed the EBook "Visual Basic 2008 Step By Step". The package comes with a companion CD on which are practice projects that correspond to the book. I have installed Visual Basic Express 2008 and also installed the "Practice Files" exactly as required. When I enter the VB 2008 Express IDE and attempt to load the project or solution files, the program loads and I get no error. The problem is that I get no data when this happens. The "Data Source" box displays a message that reads, "Your project currently has no data sources associated with it. Add a new data source, then data-bind items by dragging from this window onto forms or existing controls." The files did load properly for me once, but have not ever since. Does anybody have any clue as to what needs to be done here?
View 1 Repliesim trying to add a new data source to my visual studio 2010 project. As it stands my project consists of a few windows forms. I plan on making it access a database (made in access, unless this is a problem), and be able to perform pre-set queries, search/sort, and basic delete,add,edit functions. I will hopefully be later adding the function to print reports according to the database entries.However, the problem i am having is that when i go on to data sources, and click add new source, the following happens:3, it asks me which connection i will be using, i click new connection, then in the new connection dialog i choose the following : Microsoft Access Database File (OLE DB), then i browse for the database i made in the 'database file name' box, Then i delete the default username in the log in to database bit, as my database has no protection.

Basically, i've got a problem linking a data source (Access 2007 database) to a VB 2008 project.
I've broken it down to having a problem dragging a table onto my form, when it generates the nav bar, it says "0 of {0}", and the table is empty (despite the actual database containing values)
However, this happens only at home, at college it works totally fine. The only difference that's obvious is that i'm using Windows 7 at home, and Windows XP at college.
I refreshed my data sources to include additional items from the SQL Server databases and it appears that my entire data source from my VB.NET project disappeared.I am using Entity Framework. I may have clicked on something wrong, not quite sure. Unfortunately I can't recreate the Data Source without creating a new Entity and Data Model.I can delete the entry in the App.Config file and recreated it, however things aren't quite right.Is there a way that I can recreate my Data Source from the entry that is in my App.Config file...since that appears to have remained intact.BTW, I can go to my Data Model and successfully refresh from there, however my project isn't connecting to the database so I have quite a number of errors until I can get reconnected.

Cases is the table, OfferDate a field of the table wich is DateTime type.

i have a datagridview that has a bindingsource as its datasource and i am wanting to provide Add/Update/Delete functionality on the grid itself. Each record has a delete button which when clicked will remove the row and then add/edit is performed in the grid itself
the user then clicks a save/commit button that will then perform the nessecary updates on all rows
my initial plan was to have a copy of the data (iList) and then compare this to the contents of the binding source data to confirm whether to add/update or delete the record
also upon clicking the delete button i cant get it to remove the row from the datagridview. it thought i could do something like this...

My question is : Is it possible to build open-source project by using .NET languages ? Or do i have to build open-source projects only using open source languages like Java,Ruby, Python etc ? ( I mean is there any restriction from microsoft on building open-source projects using their langauge and tools ?)

Anyway I have used the delete sql method to delete data from a database, I want to refresh the data in the form after the record has been deleted. Do I have to close the form and then open an new instance of it? or is there another way I can refresh the data?

View 2 RepliesI created a small application and an installer project for it. I can install and also run it, only thing htat i dont like is that during setup, it downloads .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and this takes long sometimes. I want to have it on the installation CD later.
I have seen in the installer's detected dependencies, that there is the 3.5 framework contained and it has a InstallURL property = [URL]..I am a little confused about all the Framework stuff on this site - so just 3 simple questions:
1) which file exactly do i have to download,
2) where to put it and
3) what to write into the property InstallURL then? (Maybe needed to change also other properties)?

View 5 RepliesI have a vb.net windows form app that I am deploying as using the visual studio deployment project. The app needs to write event logs to the application log in the event viewer. For reasons explained here I need to create the event source during the installation process. Something like this to run as part of the installer

That code needs to be run during the installer with elevated privileges. So my questions are:

Modifying data with the ListView's EditItemTemplate by programmatically settings its DataSource property and calling its DataBind method. I don't have option to use data source control for ListView. View 2 RepliesI'm trying to connect a VB application (2010) to an MS Access DB by adding a data source from the data menu but I receive this error message "The connection you selected uses a local data file that is not in the current project.Would you like to copy the file to your project and modify the connection ?
If you copy the data file to your project, it will be copied to the project's output directory each time you run the application" and the options are (yes , No , Help)
If I choose Yes I will not be able to make the application 'device independent ' since it will not be copied under the bin , and if I choose No , changes won't be applied to the DB
how to use the VS 2010 IDE tools in a way the Microsofties didn't specifically intend. But since this is something I immediately tried without success.
I have defined a .NET 4.0 WPF Application project with a simple class that looks like this:

The question is: Why didn't this work? What will work instead? If I put bindings in a DataTemplate, it works. Blend, with its sample data stuff, implied that this should work, but it doesn't.
I build some dlls to be used in a big application, and have a team working in the dlls heart of the application and another team working in the GUI, but I am having a problems in the deployment of the dll's when a change is done, because the GUI team needs or copy the new dll to the project folder, or delete the old reference and add the new one. View 1 RepliesI've reached the end of my project but I have several unused and not needed .xsd files from trial and error of linking my program to a database. I want to clean up a bit and get rid of them while keeping only the essential files attached to this program. I tried deleting the .xsd files but it seems too ingrained into the program to the point where the program has several errors and just breaks. I have to manually restore the files from the Recycle Bin to get the program to start working again.
What are other solutions to get these files out of the project? I thought about clicking "Exclude From Project" but am afraid of the consequences. I figured I'd check with someone here before taking action.
I have 5 combo boxes that need to show the same list of items that come from a single dataset table. I have managed to bind the datatable to the combo boxes no problem at all.. but when I run the application and select an item from one of the combo boxes all the others change to the item I selected. After some research I believe that this problem is something to do with using the one datasource so I have tried assigning the dataset datatable to 2 different variables and used them as datasources for 2 of the comboboxes but the same still happens.
A work around to this I can see is to call the same methods and SQL select statements 5 times over to get individual datasources for each combo box but this doing that sounds crazy to me. how I can get around this easily? Code snippet below shows 2 combox boxes and their datasources. I'm using VS2005, .Net 2

This box shows one column of a table and allows me to select one item.Next, I have an ordinary text LABEL that I need to put text from another column of the item selected above.I tried to set the data binding field of the label, but this grabs only the first row or data and shows the selected column. That is nice, but I can not figure out how to update the selected selected ROW when the combo box item is changed.In this case the combo box lists a bunch of inventory parts. When I select a specific part, I need the change the text in a label to show the manufacturer. (like a sub-form). This same behavior will be used in several other places, but the relationships can cascade.

I have a bit of code that reaches out and grabs a series of rows from SQL Server DB. I perform an inner join to get some related table data. In the process I get returned the user id of the creator of the data. I then want to pass this into a query to get back a full name. I am having no luck figuring out how to do just that. If I use the data visualizer I can see the name I am after, I cannot figure out the call to extract it
