How To Delete Selected Button Controls In Runtime
Sep 3, 2009
I have a block of code below that allows the user to create new buttons at runtime at the click of the right button at runtime.But i am wondering how to detect the selected button on the main form and then the user can delete the selected button at runtime.
The other thing the user can do is also to drag the button around the win form when in runtime. Cause i'm new in VB and i am exploring this part. the code that i have is here and it is created by one of the member in msdn.

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.
But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.
Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.
[Code]...
So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. im using many variables in my project however, they are most of the time used for 1 or 2 things, so having them loaded up like that forever sounds not very good for performance.Is there a way i can remove a variable after i no longer need it?
for example:
private sub button1_click() handles button1.click
dim result as integer = var2 + var1 / 2

I am able to draw points on a picture box. Add Labels to the points i draw. And delete the Labels at runtime.
It is the last part im having an issue with. Apparrently when i press the button to delete all the labels it does that because i can then start creating the labels again in the picture box starting at 0 again. But it leaves all the old labels visible on the screen. I assume i need to delete the Points to but this is beyond my current knowledge set.[code]...

I've been working on a program lately. On the form load it loads a list box with a list of names from a .txt file. It's a sign in form, so when people click their name then the button it will write to a .txt file their arrival time, and the folder is their name. I can make it do it one at a time, but that's so inconvenient. I have the list box set so it accepts multiple selections, but I need to make it write the time for everyone.
how to delete the selected name from the list that would be extremely helpful, that way the person isn't signed in multiple times.

"add controls at runtime" how to add code to the controls. kinda useless with no code, ehh? all results only told me how to add the control, that's it. well, this result is different. i will teach you firstly how to add controls at runtime, then how to apply code to them at runtime
Firstly, add the controls:
[CODE]..............
Now run it. do you have a button on the form? if yes, excellent. if not, you made a mistake. try again now how to add code? you may have noticed that when you double click on any control, it says private sub button1_click(blah, blah, blah) Handles button1.click where it says handles button1.click is what determines when the code executes under what event for what control (in this case the click event for the button1). this won't work when adding code at runtime. did you notice in the above example i added a with event, and addHandler? this is what creates the handler (same as Handles button1.click)
Now we add the code for the runtime control
[CODE].........
Above, the addressOf button1_click tells the program to execute the sub button1_click when the button is clicked on (as determined by .click) but i know what you're thinking! your thinking "why would we even BOTHER doing this at runtime? isn't it easier to do it at design-time in the first place?" yes it is, providing your not writing a plugin. plugins are code based, not GUI (also reffered to as WYSIWYG). to update existing forms using plugins, you need to use this method.

I did something that when I now load my program(VB 2008), my controls; combo boxes, buttons, progress bar, etc. look like they are from VB 2005 or like VBA buttons, not the rounded edge buttons of 2008.
They look like vb 2008 controls while I am in design view, but then they change their style when I run the program..

I was wondering if there was a way to dispose a control that i generated at runtime in a diffrent block of code, The reason why i can't dispose of the control in the same block of code is that the controls settings depend on what the user imputs. In the helpfiles of Visual Studio 2008 I read control arrays are no longer supported. There is an example for the new situation but then you need to hard code the names of all the controls beforehand.I do not know how many controls I need, could be one or 5000 (think simple image browser). Is it still possible to create something like that or should I change to a different programming language like Phyton? At the moment I work around it by using a browser control and then manipulate the <img> tags but I'm puzzeld as to why this functionality was removed and if there's a solution to the problem.Another thing I don't understand is where the app goes when it's installed with 'Click once'. It dissappears completely, doesn't show up in 'Program Files', can not be found by the search function but it *is* somewhere because you can start it form the Start menu. However, I use data which is in a subfolder of the program folder, which I nor my program can find any more after the app is installed. The program runs but it can't find any place to put/get its data so in the end it doesn't work.
I work around it by *not* installing the program but have people just run it after unpacking the downloaded folder. This works great but I wonder how long this will be the case until Microsoft disables this possibility? I have no idea why they would, but I also have no idea why they did remove the functionality I mentioned above. I already changed to PHP and MySQL because I had to throw away my carefully built W2K+MSAccess image database a few years ago and after installing Vista Visual Studio 2005 was a goner. OK, I upgraded but then no control arrays any more and now they hide the apps when you install them? Why on earth would they do that?

How do you position controls loaded at runtime to align middle? I'm not looking to match the x y coordinates as the heights vary.
For example loading 2 text boxs and 2 labels.
I've tried using the Anchor and Dock properties but with no joy.
e.g.
txtNewTextBox = New TextBox
txtNewTextBox.Name = "name"
txtNewTextBox.Dock = DockStyle.Fill
