I am trying to get my program to write a .bat file to run, it writes the file fine but the file wont run properly as it needs to be encoded with ANSI but i don't know how to set it to write that. The code for this part so far:
Private Sub start_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles start.Click
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(".

I have a long UTF8 encoded text string. The actual values stored in the string are hexadecimal. I want to convert the encoding and save to a binary file.
Is there a simple encoding.convert or other method to do this with?
Basically the output is twice as large as it needs to be right now. The long way of doing it would be a routine to go through the string two characters at a time and convert to byte array and then .writeallbytes I guess. It seems there must be a simpler way of converting this?

I ve the following stream but I don't know its encoding type because the stream reader detects encoding from byte order marks
Dim reader As StreamReader = New StreamReader(respStream, True)
so how can I detect the encoding type AND convert it to another type? (for ex. from ASCII to UTF8)
PS: What is the difference with the following line?
Dim reader As StreamReader = New StreamReader(respStream,
Encoding.ASCII, True)

I used WriteAllText to set the encoding for a text file. When I wrote it, everything worked out fine. However, strange characters or symbols appeared in some ofm y fields without my having typed it. why is this so? The encoding I'm using is UTF8. I used the WriteAllText to write the fields to file but did not use the ReadAllText to bring the data back into the fields or program.

My questions isn't really about a programming language but, since I did not find a general programming forum, I chose this one as I know VB.Net. There's this game, that you might already know, which is called Star Wars Galaxies (And is ending soon actually .. ). For each account and character, the game automatically saves chat logs in a .cht file. A player can have multiple chat channels that have different chat filters (group chat, public chat, etc) and they are all saved in this file. I'm thinking they are probably separated by some kind of a "flag" for the game to be able to detect them.

if we don't mention the decoding what decoding will they use?I do not think it's System.Text.Encoding.Default. Things work well if I EXPLICITLY put System.Text.Encoding.Default but things go wrong when I live that empty. So this doesn't work well
Dim b = System.IO.File.ReadAllText("test.txt")
System.IO.File.WriteAllText("test4.txt", b)

I have just recently been using VB 2010 after using VB5. I have noticed a lot of changes. The problem I have is that I wish to open and save text files to and from arrays in the background. I've attached what I would do in VB5. I have searched around, but all the examples I find use a Textbox instead of an array. Can anyone show me how I can do this with VB 2010?

I am attempting to gather a group of file names from a directory. I am able to do this. I tested the code by having the list populate into a listbox and all desired items were added to the list.
Here is my code:
Dim di As New IO.DirectoryInfo(strPath)
Dim dir1 As IO.FileInfo() = di.GetFiles("*.txt")
Dim dFiles As IO.FileInfo
ListBox.Items.Add(dFiles)
However, a listbox is not my desired output. I am attempting to write these file names to a text file for purposes of then parsing the information to a datatable to compare with another datatable. How to get my filenames written to a textfile.

I am working on a program using VB.Net 2010 which will enable me to setup groups of files & folders for back up with syncing capabilities etc. I have a concept program which is based on some sample code I found out in one of the VB.Net forums. I have modified it from a command line based program to a form based program. At the moment I consider this code to be a "concept" program which once I have the various copy/sync routines developed and debugged will be integrated in to another program I wrote for
creating "Back Up" groups to automate the process. There are some 3rd party programs that do similar things that I want to do such as Microsofts Sync Toy, but none of them offer the grouping and exclusions options that I am going to program in to this backup/sync program.
So here is my problem, I have the included code taking two folders, a source and a destination, and copying everything from the source to the destination. It will skip over any unchanged files/folders and will delete anything found in the destination folder that is not found in the source folder and it will update all files in the destination folder that have a newer version in the source folder. In other words it will mirror image the source to the destination but will be smart enough not to copy unchanged items from the source to the destination thereby saving a lot of time. The sync part of the program is working fine, the displaying of the progress and results is not.
