How To Store The Contents Of The Controls In The Notepad On Runtime

Feb 8, 2011

I am working on my real time project where the configuration details will be given on runtime. Based on the configuration details, the next form will be loaded and the data will be exported to the database and spreadsheets from the pop3 server. I have done the extraction work from pop3 server. Now i want to store the configuration details that are provided in the controls present in the form. I am new to visual basic 2005 and it has the .Net 2.0 Framework. I do want to create the text file as notepad and and i want to save it runtime with the details. I am in hope that you people will me.

Read CSV File And Store Contents In Array

May 25, 2010

I have developed a vb.net dll (.net 3.5) which does the following :
- I have data of several stock market companies.
- They are stored in several folders under a main folder.
- These files are random access files.
- There can be around 4000 files in total for example.

I wrote a program which reads a current csv file and stores contents in array. Then I store name and path of companies in folders (which I was talking about). Then I match one company from csv (stored in array) to companies in user's folder (again reading from array). If found I insert data in the file (random access file). This whole process takes for eg. 2 min my system. A similar program was written years ago by someone in powerbasic which takes slight less time if run one but if run for multiple csv files it takes only a few seconds doing the same thing for other files. When I do the same thing (by writing code to .net dll) and making a dummy app to run it, no matter how many times I run it takes same time. And is way slower than the earlier one (PB) one I was talking about. But if I paste the same code in my win (.net) app and not use .net dll then it runs a bit faster.

I need to show status so if I pass my form's label reference to .net dll and it updates it does that slow down process a lot. As I mentioned I am trying to process the files and it takes longer in .net. What should I do to get best performance? Unfortunately due to unexplainable reasons I cannot change the format or use a db. The files which I am reading/writing (random access files) are use by other products so I have to stick to that format. What I am doing is storing the location of those files in array so that I don't have to search folder again. that is not taking time. But opening reading and writing files is time consuming if I am doing it for few thousand of them. A similar program in powerbasic (developed years ago) runs fast. Running code thru .net dll is slower than running it thru program. Why?

VS 2008 Use A Dictionary To Store The Contents Of An Ini File?

May 25, 2009

I'd like to use a dictionary to store the contents of an ini file. Now I know you can simply say

myArray.add("key1","value1")
myArray.add("key2","value2")
etc...

But Id like to store more information with a specific key, not just a single value, so id like to associate other values with key1 eg firstname, surname, address.

So by knowing the value of 'key1' I could retrieve the firstname, surname or address associated with it.

I know in PERL, hash arrays work in this manner
eg
$hash{'key1}{'firstname'} = 'john';
$hash{'key1}{'surname'} = 'smith';
etc....

Runtime Discovery Of DLLs And Their Contents

Feb 3, 2010

I have an application for which I wish to allow plug-ins. The plug-ins would be packaged in DLLs (one or more plug-ins per DLL). The application is written in Visual C++, and I was able (quite easily) to get a sample Visual C++ plug-in DLL to work. The main app looks in a particular folder for plug-in DLLs, and loads all that it finds. The process of loading the DLL calls the DllMain function, which allows the DLL to register all of its plug-ins with the main app. Another way of doing this would be to export a function with a known name in the DLL. That way, the main app can load the DLL, get a pointer to the function, and call that function, which would cause the DLL to register the plug-ins. This gives me the ability to discover the plug-ins at run time; neither the plug-ins nor the DLLs are known at build time.

I have been trying to do something similar with a VB DLL with little success. I was hoping someone would be able to suggest a way to find a VB DLL in a well-known location, load it, and either have it execute a function upon loading, or allow me to discover one or more functions that I can execute. Apparently, there is no way to export a function in a VB DLL the same as I can in a VC++ DLL.

Store Info During Application Runtime?

Jul 1, 2009

I am making a video conversion tool. I have a listview with one item per file. And i also have options to add subtitles to movies. I want it to be like this:Say the user add 2 movies. He select the first movie in the listview and then go to the subtitle tab beside. There he checks a checkbox so he can add subtitles. Some controls comes up that allows he to browse for subtitle and select which language the subtitle is. Then when he has selected these options, he select the other movie, the program saves the subtitle data somewhere and then erases all fields so he can fill them with a subtitle for the other movie.

My.Settings is way to simple for this. But i don't want SQL or db related stuff. Is there a good storing way i have missed?

Add Controls AND Code At Runtime

Jan 15, 2012

"add controls at runtime" how to add code to the controls. kinda useless with no code, ehh? all results only told me how to add the control, that's it. well, this result is different. i will teach you firstly how to add controls at runtime, then how to apply code to them at runtime

Firstly, add the controls:

[CODE]..............

Now run it. do you have a button on the form? if yes, excellent. if not, you made a mistake. try again now how to add code? you may have noticed that when you double click on any control, it says private sub button1_click(blah, blah, blah) Handles button1.click where it says handles button1.click is what determines when the code executes under what event for what control (in this case the click event for the button1). this won't work when adding code at runtime. did you notice in the above example i added a with event, and addHandler? this is what creates the handler (same as Handles button1.click)

Now we add the code for the runtime control

[CODE].........

Above, the addressOf button1_click tells the program to execute the sub button1_click when the button is clicked on (as determined by .click) but i know what you're thinking! your thinking "why would we even BOTHER doing this at runtime? isn't it easier to do it at design-time in the first place?" yes it is, providing your not writing a plugin. plugins are code based, not GUI (also reffered to as WYSIWYG). to update existing forms using plugins, you need to use this method.

They look like vb 2008 controls while I am in design view, but then they change their style when I run the program..

IDE :: Adding Controls At Runtime / Where Goes App?

May 18, 2009

In the helpfiles of Visual Studio 2008 I read control arrays are no longer supported. There is an example for the new situation but then you need to hard code the names of all the controls beforehand.I do not know how many controls I need, could be one or 5000 (think simple image browser). Is it still possible to create something like that or should I change to a different programming language like Phyton? At the moment I work around it by using a browser control and then manipulate the <img> tags but I'm puzzeld as to why this functionality was removed and if there's a solution to the problem.Another thing I don't understand is where the app goes when it's installed with 'Click once'. It dissappears completely, doesn't show up in 'Program Files', can not be found by the search function but it *is* somewhere because you can start it form the Start menu. However, I use data which is in a subfolder of the program folder, which I nor my program can find any more after the app is installed. The program runs but it can't find any place to put/get its data so in the end it doesn't work.

I work around it by *not* installing the program but have people just run it after unpacking the downloaded folder. This works great but I wonder how long this will be the case until Microsoft disables this possibility? I have no idea why they would, but I also have no idea why they did remove the functionality I mentioned above. I already changed to PHP and MySQL because I had to throw away my carefully built W2K+MSAccess image database a few years ago and after installing Vista Visual Studio 2005 was a goner. OK, I upgraded but then no control arrays any more and now they hide the apps when you install them? Why on earth would they do that?

VS 2008 - Added Buttons For The Controls And Now The Database Wont Store Anything?

Dec 19, 2010

I am building a program that does inventory control. I have multiple forms connected to same database. One of the forms I have a search function. When I was using the controls at the top of the page, it was working. I added buttons for the controls and now the database wont store anything. I can open the input form and I can add multiple inputs, close the form, open it back up, and nothing left in the database. I have also noticed that my database icon in the data source has a small red X in it. When I click on the icon, it is showing the db as closed. I can refresh it and it opens, until I run the program and it closes.
