IDE :: Visual Studio 2010 Re-build In Order To See Dataset Changes
Aug 11, 2010
When you change a dataset schema (example you add a new table) in Visual Studio 2010 (Visual Basic), you must rebuild your project in order to use the new table in a control, is that a new thing or is this a bug?

have just overlooked something somewhere...I am writing VB.NET stuff in VS2010 on Windows 7 64-bit. It seems to build by default for a 32-bit target, how to I tell it to make a 64-bit executable?

I would like to convert a VB.NET 64-bit desktop application to a desktop WPF application and also to web-based Silverlight application. Can you write 64-bit applications using WPF or Silverlight using
VS 2010?
If not, can you write 32-bit WPF and Silverlight programs that act as the presentation managers that interface with the user and have them use 64-bit class libraries? Or do all modules have to be either 32-bit or 64-bit?

I had an Excel spreadsheet which I put in MS Access (database). I then took that database and used that as a source in VB to create a GUI for. In VB I have an input text box to search and pull of different fields. I created some queries for searches in from the text box. I have have a dataset view of the data which has the binding navigator (add, insert, save).
The problem I have is that when I hit the '+' for add to add information and then click the 'save' button in the binding Navigator, the information I put in does not save. I check this by exit out of the program run (debug to open the app) and then open it back up to search and/or check for the new information I put in. My overall goal is to create to publish the final code and use an a standalone program.
Also, as another option,(I would like to learn) Is there a way to map VB directly to an Excel file to have the user input information and save to the excel file.

I've a solution with 15 projects (14 class libraries and one web application). Each class library has corresponding test project (i.e. if I have MyApp.Services project there exists MyApp.Services.Tests -- using NUnit). Everything is written in VB.NET. The problem is that when VS tries to compile any of *.Tests project it stops responding (the bigger the project the longer the period without reposnse). I don't know where to start looking for an issue. I'll add that I've R# 4.5 installed.
UPDATE 1:Is there any way to benchmark a build in visual studio? To get build times for every project?
UPDATE 2:It seems that there is no difference after disabling R#.

I am having an issue with Visual Studio 2008 SP1. Basically, I have a .NET 3.5 solution with a client, shared and server component. While coding, all components run on the same box, but in production the server component is a standalone (remoting) service running on a separate server.
I would expect that a change to the client component would require only a rebuild of that component as there is no client/server dependency. This is in fact how it works on my work PC. However, on my personal PC and another co-worker's PC, any modification - even a simple label change on the client, requires the server component service to be stopped so that the solution can be rebuilt in its entirety. Does anyone know if there is a particular setting that controls this??

I have defined a class with multiple constructors so that the underlying interfaces are immutable once the object is instantiated. I would like one of the constructors to be the "default" constructor for when a user types the following in Visual Studio:
var obj = new MyClass( Dim obj As New MyClass(
Currently when I go to instantiate the object, the constructors aren't listed (in Visual Studio IntelliSense) in the order I declared them in my class. Is there a way to mark up my constructors so that their methods appear in a particular order during instantiation in Visual Studio IntelliSense?

ETA: Visual Studio 2010 VB Express edition exhibits the same behaviour.
ETA: Visual Studio 2010 C# Express edition does NOT exhibit the same behaviour.
In VisualStudio 2008 VB Express edition, I specify the following comments:
''' <summary>
''' ...
''' </summary>
''' <remarks>
[Code]....
If I compile the file and examine the .xml, I see that the comments are being included in the reverse order to what I specify ie. Part3 appears before Part2 appears before Part1.
Additional behaviour: If inline comments are interspersed between the external includes, they are all written to the xml first and then the includes (in reverse order)!
let there be an option called 'Turn off unintuitive xml comment behaviour'

I write an HTML file with MS Word, and use it on my application. The problem is that I need to close Word or Visual Studio in order to save the file, or compile the code, because each one reserves the file permission rights. The html file is only written by word, and only read from VS. At compile time, the file is copied to execution directory. Is there a way to give both programs simultaneous permission rights?

I am using Visual Studio 2008 Professional to build a VB.NET console application. I have a text file that I want to copy to the output directory after a build. I would like to create a build event to do that, but I do not see a "Build Events" folder on the property page. Is there a setting where I can get this folder? Or, is there another way I can set up a post-build event to copy a file to the output directory? The folders I see on the Properties page:

I have a dataset with a table. The table has three columns. The first column is a combo box with 6 company names loaded in it. The second column will allow my user to enter monetary values which are spending from whatever company was selected in the first column. The third column will calculate a percentage. After putting the table on my form, I would like to go through the table as the user enter the values and add the monetary values of the second column if they belong to the same company.Meaning that for example every time company A is detected in the combo box, its spendings will be added and displayed in a textbox in a different form.Every time company B is selected in the combo box, its its spendings will also be added and displayed in a textbox in a different form.and so on, and so on for all 6 companies.

I am writing an application that is doing a file conversion.I created a new process in order to run an exe and pass it some arguments in order to do the file conversion. I ran this in the Submit button click event.I added an event handler for when the Process had exited and then continued my code, since I had to wait for the file conversion to complete before continuing.
Everything is running fine now up until the point where I am trying to call a FillBy for one of my datasets. My fill by is accepting a parameter UserID and filling it based on the user id, which is selected in a combo box in the program itself.I keep getting exceptions and it immediately exits the program whenever I try and use this fillby method, if I take it out it completes successfully; however, the new row I just inserted was not added.
I tried adding a tryparse for the value selected from the UserID combobox but I get this cross-thread exception, so I have a feeling the 2 are related.

Does anybody know which version of Visual Studio 2010 contains the full set of Visual Basic SharePoint Templates? I am about to embark on a project to create Visual Web Parts to be used in a SharePoint report.
At the moment I am using Visual Studio 2008 and even though the WSPBuilder is installed none of the relevant SharePoint templates are present.Having searched SO and the web, most advise to install the templates via the Visual Studio command prompt: devenv /installvstemplates
Alas the Visual Studio command prompt is also missing from my VS2008 installation. So, the question remains: which version of VS2010 contains what I need for pain-free SharePoint development? There is a rather large price different between VS2010 Professional and VS2010 Premium, so can anyone tell me if the cheaper version (VS2010 Professional) contains all the Sharepoint templates?

I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

I'm seeing a strange build bug a lot. Sometimes after typing some code we receive the following build error.
Class 'clsX' must implement 'Event PropertyChanged(sender As Object, e As PropertyChangedEventArgs)' for interface System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanged'.
And
'PropertyChanged' cannot implement 'PropertyChanged' because there is no matching event on interface 'System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanged'.
Those error should never go together! Usually we can just ignore the exception and build the solution but often enough this bug stops our build. (this happens a lot using Edit and Continue which is annoying)Removing the PropertyChanged event and retyping the same code! sometimes fixes this. We're using a code generator that causes this error to surface but just editing some files manually triggers this exception too. This error occur's on multiple machines using various setups.

At present I have wrote an application (in-house CRM, vb .net 2010) which allows me to send emails under the selected customer & I categorised these emails. As these are categorised I can return data to display email history in my program by using search criteria:
Dim oMail As Outlook.MAPIFolder = oNS.GetDefaultFolder(Outlook.OlDefaultFolders.olFolderSentMail)
Dim sSearch As String
sSearch = "[Categories] = '" + "[" + tAccount.Text.Trim + "]" + "(" + tShipTo.Text.Trim + ")'"
Dim oItems As Outlook.Items = oMail.Items.Restrict(sSearch)
However the limitation to the above is it only looks at sent items & no other folder. My ideal solution would be to display all email correspondence for a certain contact.
