Setting Variables To Store User Setting For Applications
Feb 13, 2012In our projects we use setting variables to store user setting for the applications. Moreover, with every latest version of the applications, we upgrade these variables to retain user settings.Normally, this works fine, but recently one of my end user reported an error i.e.Configuration System failed to initialize". The error is related to user.config file. Therefore we requested the user to send us his file.After received the folder, we noticed that it contains 3 files (3begfjb.newcfg,3begfjb.tmp and user. config). 3begfjb.tmp is an empty file, while 3begfjb.newcfg and user.config are identical files. We tried to open these files but the data in user.config isn't proper xml rather its unreadable formatted file.Do any you guys had experienced this sort of issue or any ideas how and what may have created these files and corrupted user.config file.

Jul 23, 2009My app has a main form from which the user can set specific 'setup' information for things such as ports and IP addresses, plus it gives them visibility to a table that is used in conjunction with the TCPListener/responder. The program receives a request for information which it gets from the TCPListener, it gets the requested information and sends back the requested information. It all works great, but I need to move it into the background. When the listener starts, the app is basically locked from any user interface (including the ability to close the form and terminate the process).
What I currently have is:
A class called MyTcpListener with a shared sub 'RequestRespond'
From the main form, there is simply a button labeled "START" for the user. When the user clicks on start I call the listener by:
MyTcpListener.RequestRespond(LocalPort)

Dec 23, 2009i have few questions about the user interface when working with a VS setup project
1. i have added a Checkboxes dialog, i have 3 checkboxes they are used to select upon 3 tools to be installed, so during the progress of the instilation, how should i let the project know which of the 3 tools was selected ? (i hope i was clear)
2. a bit of silly question - is it possible to edit something in a dialog ? like in my case in the "finished" dialog my customer didnt like the the end button is named "close" and he wants it to be named "Finish"
finally, this is an extra non programing but it would be good if i was able to find an answere :P, when i plug a USB in the computer it opens the autoplay, and i have my instilation file in the USB (it will be distributed on a USB rather than a CD), so i want to add to the autoplay a button that runs the instilation file
VS Setup Project Installs For Each User?
Feb 13, 2009We're in the process of releasing software and i've noticed that our standalone version (Windows forms) reinstalls for each users, the issue for this is that we sell to colleges and generally they install of network shares. When the software tries installing for a user it can't find the network share (e.g. permission denied).
How can i stop the installer from launching when the user launches the software.
Reminds me of how Microsoft Office use to be back in the days of 2000.

Feb 11, 2009I am attempting to set up a datagridview that is dynamic based on user input. The user input is a start and end date. The start date defines the first column the next column is the next date... until the end date (x-axis). The y-axis is technicians and the fields will show the assignment for the technician on that date.
All the advise I am seeing on datagridviews is to create a property methods to provide the information for each column. for example:

How do I create a object data source that allows me to populate the data grid? I want the column headers to be included as a string in row 0 of the multidimensional array. The amount of columns will be dynamic with a minimum of 1 and maximum viewing of 100 days based on what dates are selected in the start date and end date fields.The input dates will be used to generate a query to a database that will populate the multidimensional array.One solution I see is pick a start date and have a set number of dates and code for set number of columns (100) in a row and then set the names of the columns dynamically...ahhhh code repetition!
I am not sure how else to do this but looking for a more suttle way.I am using this to create a simple scheduling tool to see resource schedules by date. There is an unmoveable end date so initially I will need to look ahead 100 days but as the end date gets closer, I will have fewer and fewer dates. So eventually the end date will be that start date.
Is There Version Of .NET Framework 3.5 That Does Not Require Downloading during User's Setup Procedure?
Mar 30, 2010I made a little program for Hobby-use, and I like it to be installed by an installer. There's an installer program (Windows Installer 3.1?) deliverd with Visual Studio 2008 but that does not do the job completely. I want a coupling to be made between a program and a the users startup directory.If Windows Installer 3.1 can do that after all, can somebody explain how? If not, is there a free or low cost, simple to use (no scripting) installer program what will do the job? At last: Is there a version of .NET Framework 3.5 that does not require downloading during the user's setup procedure?

When I set the property from my main program i am getting an error "Invalid attempt to call Read when reader is closed." Aug 24, 2010I am creating a customised version of the ListView control and there are several of the properties that a ListView has that I would like to be set to a different value to the ListView default when a user goes to use my user control.
From what I've found there seems to be a number of people suggesting just set them in the constructor, but to the best of my knowledge that would just mean that the user would not be able to change the properties in the PropertyGrid in the VS IDE.I assume this is probably something extremely simple that I have overlooked.

Everything works fine here but the problem is after addig/removing (using add/remove button) new items into the combobox, when I close it, the new items added/removed are gone. I need to save the new items added to the combobox during close. I can understand I have to create a Application Setting which will save the new items added to combobox upon closing. I have had to use the System.DirectoryServices.Protocols namespace for all the work, because the ADSI classes (System.DirectoryServices namespace) wouldn't work across the DMZ properly.
Anyway it's been working fine connecting to Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 R2; however we're running tests against Active Directory on Windows Server 2008 R2 (2008r2 in native mode for forest and domain) in order to upgrade.

Mar 17, 2011I'm setting form sizes according to user screen resolution and I think I need design no smaller than 1024 x 768 these days. Using the following code I set my first form and use Anchor settings to resize and maintain controls. Does resize affect StartupPosition in other forms and what do you think is the best StartupPosition to Show the next (smaller) forms? I have a feeling I should have created child forms but simply added forms to the project as I needed them. For example, the first code example does not take account of the WIN7 Task Bar.

Mar 29, 2012Windows forms Application. VB .NET 4.0 In my application I have a global boolean variable that keeps track of when changes are made and when they are saved called changesSaved. On closing even it checks the value of this variable before closing the window.. I am using textchanged event to automatically change the value of changesSaved to FALSE when text is changed.. Problem: The group box items are being populated dynamically so the user can edit the values or simply just view them. This dynamic population is causing the textchanged event to fire because the program is changing the text value of the box to put the values in that are stored in the database. The textchanged event should not fire unless the user him or herself enters a value or values in the text boxes..
Is there a way to specify the source i guess you could say for the text changed event or another way so that it will only fire when the user inputs information.??? Functions are as follows: The first is called by the load event to place the values in the box... The next one is the one that is being called as a result of the first one and is also the one that is causing the problems.
