VS 2008 : ImageList/Memory Errors Suddenly Occur In App?
Apr 16, 2012The user has been running the app in question for over a year with no issues like this (this is a VB2008 business/database application with an executable 4.6 MB in size). Starting last week, "all of a sudden", the user started getting INTERMITTENT error messages like the following:
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
Creation of the ImageList handle did not succeed.
Out of memory.
Parameter is not valid.
The last two have been accompanied by the big "red cross" on the form (in the screen shots the user sent me).The fact that the one message mentions "ImageList" and poking around on the Internet for answer on "Parameter not valid" points in the direction of a graphic problem, but nothing has changed in this area for a long time, and the app only uses graphics in a very straightforward way, using images on buttons and menu items, but not doing any in-line graphics methods.

Debug Late Bound Projects In The IDE?
Feb 24, 2011I've tested it several times because I cannot believe it. If you put a late bound project in the same solution as the calling project, you can debug the late bound project !
You can even put breakpoints in!
@#%ing amazing. Top marks to Microsoft. I don't know if this is by design, or a side effect of how the debugger works, but I don't care because it makes writing late bound projects so much friendlier.

May 7, 2009I would like to use MS Office automation and have event handlers that fire for user-triggered events. For example, if the user clicks the save button in Word, I want to intercept that event and execute code in my program.
I don't want to be bound to a specific version of Word because I don't know what version my user will be running, so I instantiate a reference to Word using late binding. The problem is that the AddHandler and the Dim WithEvents commands require specific references to an object that is known at design time. Given this, how can I define an event handler without having an early bound reference to a specific version of the Word library?
I can try to a reference to an earlier version of Word with the expectation that newer versions of Word will be backwards compatible, but this seems kludgey and risky.

Application Does Not Crash On Runtime Errors
Mar 31, 2012I've got quite a big application and I've just started noticing that not all runtime errors cause an error.
for example if I call a function that executes an SQL query and the query string uses invalid syntax or refers to a field that doesn't exist then that would normally cause an error at runtime. But it doesn't - as soon as it hits the error the function simply returns to the caller.
If I enclose the code in a try/catch then the error is trapped but, while developing, I just want a good old runtime error but not getting one.
