Debug Late Bound Projects In The IDE?
Feb 24, 2011
I've tested it several times because I cannot believe it. If you put a late bound project in the same solution as the calling project, you can debug the late bound project !
You can even put breakpoints in!
@#%ing amazing. Top marks to Microsoft. I don't know if this is by design, or a side effect of how the debugger works, but I don't care because it makes writing late bound projects so much friendlier.
OK Cor, you can go ahead and rubbish late-binding now.

I would like to use MS Office automation and have event handlers that fire for user-triggered events. For example, if the user clicks the save button in Word, I want to intercept that event and execute code in my program.
I don't want to be bound to a specific version of Word because I don't know what version my user will be running, so I instantiate a reference to Word using late binding. The problem is that the AddHandler and the Dim WithEvents commands require specific references to an object that is known at design time. Given this, how can I define an event handler without having an early bound reference to a specific version of the Word library?
I can try to a reference to an earlier version of Word with the expectation that newer versions of Word will be backwards compatible, but this seems kludgey and risky.

I've got a piece of code in a project (MyProject) that contains early bound object from a referenced assembly (We'll call it CommonAssembly):
Dim myObject As CommonAssembly.MyEarlyBoundType
now I have another assembly that is dynamically loaded because it is not present in all projects:
Dim myLateBoundObject As Object = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.CreateInstanceAndUnwrap("Utils", "Utils.MyLateBoundType")
MyLateBoundType derives from CommonAssembly.MyEarlyBoundType, and I want to cast myObject to myLateBoundObject and then programmatically invoke the additional

I have a VS 2008 Solution in VB.Net that has 2 projects - a Launcher and the App. The Launcher is what runs first, checks to make sure the App has all the latest files from the network, etc. and then launches the App. The Launcher allows the user to select their environment (Test, Production) then passes those values into the App.exe as command line arguments.
This works fine when running normally, but when trying to debug this, I'm trying to figure out how to start Debugging from the Launcher, then pass the selected Environment into the other project so it can read them as command line arguments.

Simple question one would think, but I am having trouble finding the answer. Eclipse.org promotes eclipse as being a Java IDE, but has many plugins and extensions. I was wondering if maybe there is a plugin or extension that would allow me to compile/debug vb.net projects in eclipse?

I ran into an issue today where VB is behaving differently from C#. The issue is as follows.
Also note this is for .Net 4.0.
Both projects are set to build in release mode
Both projects are in the same solution
The solution is set to build in release
Both projects output to a Release folder in bin / obj
Everything seems to be okay except for one thing. When inspecting the files with a tool such as http://assemblyinformation.codeplex.com/ the VB projects show as Debug and the C# projects show as Release.
I tracked this down to a setting in the Advanced Compiler Options for the pdb files. If the debug info output for VB is set to anything other than none - then the project builds in debug mode (keep in mind it still outputs to the release folder). C# does not exhibit this behavior.
I did a blog post here to work around the issue - but would love to know the root cause if any one knows.

I am using Visual Studio 2008, .NET Framework 3.5.
Basically what I am trying to do is have my webpage project folder located directly on my local machine (ex. Local #1).Our database is located on a server (ex. Server #1). I am building my web applications on my local machine and then trying to debug them in Visual Studio 2008. Only every single time I click to debug my project I get a "Security Exception" error that looks something like the following.[code]...

Just got a little quirk with VS2008 on 1 solution.When i press F5 to debug my solution builds the current project but then insists on building all my setup projects...
This only occurs on 1 of my solutions and it has 20 projects within it.
I've checked startup projects and it has no dependancies and is set to selected project.
EDIT: Right click and debug in new instance works fine

I have written a small program to aide my business and the program works fine. But while compiling the code it shows a lot of warnings like the following."late bound resolution; run time errors may occur""implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'String'." Where am i going wrong. Even though the options strict off removes the warning I want to correct the warnings.

Is there anyone who can tell me the code for the below? Receive a lower bound and an upper bound of a range. Also receive a number of random numbers to generate. You must validate
1) the numbers are integers
2) the lower bound is less than or equal to the upper bound
3) the number to generate is positive (i.e., > 0).
Generate this many numbers in the specified range and keep track of how many of each are generated in an array of counters. Once all the numbers have been generated, display in a List Box the number, the raw count data, and the percentage of how many times the number was generated displayed with two decimal places of precision.

Simple question that does not seem to be covered: If I use a lot of Debug.WriteLine statements in my code, will they be completely absent in my production version?
I mean: Is the compiler smart enough to not emit any code for those calls? Or would I have to surround them by #if DEBUG..#end if directives?

There is something strange going on with my datagridview.
I've a data adapter that fills the underlying data table from a database. Then I assign this datatable as datasource to the datagridview Then I add a row to the datagridview and immediately I need to update the table in my database (as soon as user leaves the newly created row).
At this moment I have more rows (+2, not +1) in my datagridview than in the underlying datatable (the new row doesn't exists yet in it so the data adapter .Update method doesn't write anything to the database).
When DataGridView's .RowLeave event fires the undelying datatable is not yet updated. I've a question - is this behavior normal?

We are binding most of our text boxes and dropdown boxes to a BINDING NAVIGATOR (with a DATA SOURCE of a DATA TABLE).When the BN is clicked through the text boxes all change immediately.We need to use some non-bound controls as well.First one is 4 radio buttons that when clicked will change a single value in a DATA TABLE.What would be the best method to do this? Should I track when the CURRENTCHANGED event occurs on the BINDING NAVIGATOR.I'm thinking that I could trick this by BINDING the SINGLE FIELD to a HIDDEN TEXTBOX and when that textbox CHANGED event occurs mess with the radio buttons and visa-versa.

Using Visual Studio 2008 I've built a COM object that targets the .Net Framework 2.0.
I'm trying to use the component in MS Access 2007 on XP SP3. If I use early binding it works flawlessly. If I use late binding I get this error:

Difference between Early and Late Bindings.
Example of Late Binding:
If
sender IsNot Nothing AndAlso TypeOf sender Is Values Then
receiveobj = CType(sender, System.Object)
a1 = CType(receiveobj.a1, Int32)
End If
How do I change this into the prefered Early Binding?

So I am taking a stab at converting a large VBA project I'm working into .NET. It's in VBA right now only because of convenience of a database (MS Access). But having stumbled upon VB 2010 Express, I'm seeing what I can do in .NET to make my project even better.To that end, one trick I am doing in the VBA project involves late binding.[code]To provide a simplified example, lets say I have three classes, clsOne, clsTwo, and clsThree. They are themselves similar, and in .NET, I'm actually reducing the code each has due to proper class inheritance. But I need to understand how to move away from late-binding, which I use in the VBA project.Now reading into VB .NET some, I've come across the 'Of' keyword, and this looks like the holy grail that I've been seeking. Please understand that these example is not actual code, and the issue cannot be solved (as far as I know) by fancy inheritance and overloading/overriding.[code]

I have a class from where I need to set objects in another form?
Form1:
vb.net
Function SetMyObject(ByVal frmTarget As Object)
frmTarget.PictureBox1 = Form1.PictureBox1
End Function
(Not tested code, just wrote to show what I mean)So that's the late binding one.I should also say that the frmTarget variable isn't static so thats why I can't make something like Form2.PictureBox1 = Form1.PictureBox1

I should convert some code from VB to C#. Given following lines of VB work (I think only because option is not set to strict):
Dim someProp As SomeType
Try
someProp = CType(SomeInstance, Object).SomeProp
' ...
Due to late binding, this code is possible under VB. Of course, following won't work under C#:
SomeType someProp;
try
{
someProp = ((object)SomeInstance).SomeProp;
// ...
How could I formulate something similar under C#?

I like to keep Option Strict On, but in some cases I need late binding.
For example I need to read the value of Geometry.Area when Geometry could be either a Square or a Circle.
It is not my object model, and Square and Circle are not derived nor share an interface that implements the Area property, so I need either a huge Select Case for each geometry type and for each property, or I use late binding.
I tried with this and a few similar variants, but I couldn't get it to work:
Geometry.[GetType]().InvokeMember("Area", Reflection.BindingFlags.GetProperty Or Reflection.BindingFlags.Public Or Reflection.BindingFlags.Instance, Nothing, Geometry, Nothing)
