Sep 16, 2011
I have written a small program to aide my business and the program works fine. But while compiling the code it shows a lot of warnings like the following."late bound resolution; run time errors may occur""implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'String'." Where am i going wrong. Even though the options strict off removes the warning I want to correct the warnings.

I've got a piece of code in a project (MyProject) that contains early bound object from a referenced assembly (We'll call it CommonAssembly):
Dim myObject As CommonAssembly.MyEarlyBoundType
now I have another assembly that is dynamically loaded because it is not present in all projects:
Dim myLateBoundObject As Object = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.CreateInstanceAndUnwrap("Utils", "Utils.MyLateBoundType")
MyLateBoundType derives from CommonAssembly.MyEarlyBoundType, and I want to cast myObject to myLateBoundObject and then programmatically invoke the additional

I've tested it several times because I cannot believe it. If you put a late bound project in the same solution as the calling project, you can debug the late bound project !
You can even put breakpoints in!
@#%ing amazing. Top marks to Microsoft. I don't know if this is by design, or a side effect of how the debugger works, but I don't care because it makes writing late bound projects so much friendlier.
OK Cor, you can go ahead and rubbish late-binding now.

I would like to use MS Office automation and have event handlers that fire for user-triggered events. For example, if the user clicks the save button in Word, I want to intercept that event and execute code in my program.
I don't want to be bound to a specific version of Word because I don't know what version my user will be running, so I instantiate a reference to Word using late binding. The problem is that the AddHandler and the Dim WithEvents commands require specific references to an object that is known at design time. Given this, how can I define an event handler without having an early bound reference to a specific version of the Word library?
I can try to a reference to an earlier version of Word with the expectation that newer versions of Word will be backwards compatible, but this seems kludgey and risky.

I'm looking for some help (a shortcut to be more accurate) with type conversions in VB.NET 2005.I made a little program that stores rich text, with multiple pages (tabs0¦ like a notebook.I use 3 different printers throughout my day and the default printer has a page size of 3 x 15¦ it's a Zebra. It must remain the default printer. My little program has Page Setup,Print Preview¯ and Print¯ controls. It works fine as-is, but I am revisiting the project with the hopes of being able to store the selected printer and page setup for each page (tab) within the notebook¯.Currently, I am grabbing the information from the PageSetup Dialog1 Object and converting it to a String:[code]This is great for storing the PageSetup information for each tab, but putting it to use later is a problem! How do you take these Strings and then SET them back to the Object without parsing up each String?

After running into much difficulty getting started on my little planner attachment, I found this C# program (calendar_src) floating around on the net...somewhere. So I have been working on trying to convert this from C# to VB, which I have been using an online converter. From what I know I have been going through and trying to edit the code after it has been converted to VB code as best as I can. But now I have limited the errors from over 50 to these:
Error1Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'DrawLine' can be called without a narrowing conversion:
'Public Sub DrawLine(pen As System.Drawing.Pen, x1 As Integer, y1 As Integer, x2 As Integer, y2 As Integer)': Argument matching parameter 'y1' narrows from 'Double' to 'Integer'.
[code].....
Not only this, the VB main Form1 isn't showing the "DayView1" control that the C# one is. When I first created the VB app, I didn't know how to make 2 projects in 1, so it's probably wrong altogether...but I tried. The only reasons I am wanting to go off of someone else's control is because it only lacks 1 feature that I want, and that's having a full month view, not just limited to 1-3-5-7 day views.

I have a little problem here. I am getting an error which they are jumping on this statement: a.Proxy = New WebProxy(Address.Text, Ports.Text). I have removed the equal to replace with the Address.Text and Ports.Text, I have tried to included And statement and the '&' in that statement, but I keep get the messagebox. The ip I am connecting are working well.
Here it is the
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Try
Dim a As HttpWebRequest = DirectCast(HttpWebRequest.Create("http://whatismyip.com/automation/n09230945.asp"), HttpWebRequest)
[code]....
Error: Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'New' can be called without a narrowing conversion: 'Public Sub New(Address As String, BypassOnLocal As Boolean)': Argument matching parameter 'BypassOnLocal' narrows from 'String' to 'Boolean'. 'Public Sub New(Host As String, Port As Integer)': Argument matching parameter 'Port' narrows from 'String' to 'Integer'.
I shouldn't have the messagebox displaying on my screen while I am connect to the ip. I have tried with the dim statement to included the textbox strings, but it doesn't help. how I could included the strings of the textbox in the a.Proxy = New WebProxy statement?

There are issue with using WebBrowser late bind calls related to object/property names generation. For example:
WebBrowser1.Document.DomDocument.Forms.Myform.mycontrol.Value = "test"
will fail with more than one instance of the WebBrowser control.what actually happen is that mycontrol object become Mycontrol and compiled vb.net application will fail with error
Member not found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80020003 (DISP_E_MEMBERNOTFOUND))
at Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.LateBinding.LateGet(Object o, Type objType,
String name, Object[] args, String[] paramnames, Boolean[] CopyBack)[code].....
Same code will work with vb6 app with multiple WebBrowser controls
Edit: This code is comipled with: Option Strict Off

I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and want to design my Dynamic crystal reports. In vb6 i normally did this via bounding each control of the section1 ,2 or 3 via run time code by giving the name of that control something like
.section3.controls("txtName").text=some value
can I did the same with crystal reports as well in VB.Net if yes than how.?

I've got quite a big application and I've just started noticing that not all runtime errors cause an error.
for example if I call a function that executes an SQL query and the query string uses invalid syntax or refers to a field that doesn't exist then that would normally cause an error at runtime. But it doesn't - as soon as it hits the error the function simply returns to the caller.
If I enclose the code in a try/catch then the error is trapped but, while developing, I just want a good old runtime error but not getting one.

I have a created a high performance diagnostic logging mechanism that uses a time stamp. It's a print statement gadget that automatically prepends date/time using Now() for the basis of that time stamp. I use the full date and time all the way down to the milliseconds value of the Now() object.
Are there any resolution issues when using the milliseconds component.

for example
public class person
fname as string
lname as string
end class

i would liek ot be able to call the web service and return the data type back and have a generic coversion instead of as above in stead of:

I need my app. to Create an Control Array at runtime that will consist of up to 50 Data Bound Labels. The app. will first be checking the 1st database field (Ing1) to see if there is data, if so then only create the 1st Data Bound Label (lblIng1) and then check the next field and so on.
The problem is that VB 2008 dos not seem to support Control Arrays. There must be another way to work around this.

I have a problem involving late binding, and I absolutely cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix it. I have spent hours researching the problem to no avail, so I am turning to stackoverflow as a last resort. The problem is pretty much this: I am creating a grocery list application. I have a class named Item which stores the name, price, quantity, and description of an item on the grocery list. I have a module named ListCollection which defines a Collection of Item objects. I have created an Edit form which will automatically display the currently selected ListCollection item properties, but whenever I attempt to fill the text boxes, it tells me that Option Strict disallows late binding. I COULD take the easy route and disable Option Strict, but I'd prefer to figure out what the problem is so I know for future reference.I shall paste pertinent code here. (Late binding error is in EditItem.vb)
[code]...
I have tried declaring a String variable and assigning the Item property to that, and I have also tried grabbing the value directly from the List item (not using the Get function), and neither of these made a difference.

I have a datagridview that is bound to a list object of a custom type via a BindingSource. From everything I've read, I should be able to click the column headers and the rows sort, This doesn't happen for me. Sortmode is set to automatic and the column headers aren't set to be used for selection so it should work.
I know that I could sort progamatticly but that seems a little bit of a waste given that I should just be able to do it by default.
