Indicating Reversed Contents Of Array

Mar 14, 2011

In Mastering VB2010 on arrays, a command is show indicating the reversed contents of an array can be assigned to another array.
ReversedArray = System.Array.Reverse(ArrayName)

I can't get this to work and part of the problem is how to set up (dim) the ReversedArray. When I enter this I get a squiggly line under the right side of the equation and an error message saying no data is produced by the expression.

I get the same error with a copy command:
CopiedName = System.Array.Copy(Name, CopiedName, 10)
How do I set up working code to reverse or copy the contents of an array?

Validate The Contents Of A MaskTextBox With Contents From An Array Or List?

May 10, 2011

I am trying to create a code where I placed sets of numbers in an array.I'll use a masktextbox to have the user enter the numbers to match what's in the array. If the user enters the number, ex: social, and the data is correct (matches the numbers in the array), something happens if the number entered in the masktextbox does not match any of the number sets in an array then another thing happens.The masktextbox so far only validates format and gets number only, however, I want the number entered to match whats in the array.

MS SQL Server, Indicating VARBINARY(MAX) Field's Datatype In .NET?

Oct 13, 2010

I use a VARBINARY(MAX) column, because I have no idea what is going to be put into it. All I know is that as of this point in time, the data will be one of many traditional data types(Integer, String, DateTime, etc.)I also have another column that is meant to indicate the DataType so the .NET application can handle the data and validate input accordingly.Right now, for testing, I have a DataType table in my database that stores the "supported" datatypes for the VARBINARY column, and a foreign key linking to the column meant to indicate the DataType. This works perfectly, but it feels akward.

Default Sound Indicating Invalid Action / Error?

Sep 11, 2011

The following code produces a sound that's like a tone or a soft bell, indicating that an action has completed successfully:
System.Media.SystemSounds.Beep.Play()
Any code for the opposite? You know like if you tried to do something in Windows that was invalid. Is there some kind of default sound indicating an error that I can invoke on a Windows computer in VB.Net similar to the one above only discordant?

Put Contents Of C: Into An Array?

Feb 16, 2011

Am learning arrays at the moment and I have the below piece of code that goes through drive C: and displays the files in in a list box.

I want to try and expand it to use array.sort so that it gets the files, puts them into an array, and then I can sort by filename or file size. I have been rattling my brain over this - as to how do I put the files into an array.

Would like an explanation if possible as more interested in learning it rather than the answer.

I am having a hard time displaying the contents of a text file that i read into an array. I read the text of the text file into an array but then i need to display it but i can't seem to get it. Put List Box Contents In An Array?

Dec 4, 2010

I'm a sorta newcomer to visual basic and programming in general and I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to put a listbox into an array. And just so we don't make any assumptions yes this is for school and no I'm not looking for anyone to do my homework for me. I just need some direction on how to do this step so I can make progress.

Anyway, the program is a data of students and I gotta do the code for alphabetically sorting by last name in ascending and descending order. I have to make it so whenever the A-Z button is pressed it will sort whatever is in the listbox, be it 1 record or all.[code]...

SSN Checking Entered Based On Reversed Range

Jan 13, 2009

I have a need to verify SSN's that are entered based on a reserved range (these are used for advertising and will never become valid). The input is from a masked text box formatted as 000-00-0000. I may be wrong, but I figured the most logical method would be to remove the hyphens and convert the string to an integer, then compare the starting point and end point of the range.

'Valid SSNs
'Currently, a valid SSN cannot have an area number between 734 and 749, or above 772, the highest area number which the Social Security Administration has allocated. This should not be confused with Tax Identification Numbers which include additional area numbers.

VS 2008 Reversed File Format (Java)

Jun 27, 2011

I discovered that java uses a reversed way of storing data. For example, the integer value 2 has the following byte values:

In "Windows" format:
[2] [0] [0] [0]
In "Java" format:
[0] [0] [0] [2]

The binary readers of both languages seem to use the same different format. Now my question: What is the easiest way to read binary values (Integer, Single, etc.) in VB .NET from a java formatted file? I already made functions like these:

VS 2010 - Results Coming Out Numbers Reversed

Feb 28, 2012

I've created a program that allows a user to input numbers and then outputs the highest and lowest number when the user is done (the user indicates this by using a sentinel value of -99). My only problem is that it keeps putting out the numbers reversed (largest as smallest and vice versa).

The code is below.
Module Module1
Sub Main()
'Declare Variables
Dim number, smallestNumber, largestNumber As Integer
'Get numbers from user
[Code] .....

Is it a no-no to have a module within a module like I do there? So far there is no mention of such in the book but I can't find an example of it happening yet either? The instructor wants modules to perform the input and return of information and the only way I could figure out it doing both of those things (rather than using the main module for user input) was to call the module that figures hi/lo within the module that asks for the numbers. I'm really unsure on this part.

Bitmap Array With Dynamic Contents

Apr 2, 2010

I'm working on a program that has to get a set of images and then scan them to find pixels that match colors in an color array. Anyway I think I got everything working but how to load the images in as bitmaps. See the images are dynamic, they change there filenames so I can't call them with a static call like Dim bmp2 As New Bitmap("c:button.gif").

So I am using a loop to feed the images into an array for bitmap but thats not working, anyway that I can do this as, right now the program gets all the filenames for the images from a text file that is sent in to us. All I need to do is have the program check each image for pixels that match our color list. But I cant get the images into the bitmap array.

Copying Array Contents To Listboxes?

Feb 26, 2009

I am having a hell of a time figuring out where I am going wrong in copying the contents of arrays to listboxes.

I am using textboxes to input team numbers and team names.

The code for that is as follows (used in a button after the data has been entered in the text boxes:

Teamname, Teamnumber and numteams have been previously declared as public variables (string,integer and integer) in a module as they are used throughout the project. Numteams has had a value ascribed to it in a previous form

ReDim Teamname(Numteams)
ReDim Teamnumber(Numteams)
Dim thisteam As Integer

[Code]....

I have had to put in the "" for the Teamname variable as otherwise I was getting an error saying "Value cannot be null". I am also not sure what is causing that.

When I do that, I get 0 in the listboxes for all the teamnumbers except the last one which is right and blank strings for the team names except for the last one which is also right.

Read CSV File And Store Contents In Array

May 25, 2010

I have developed a vb.net dll (.net 3.5) which does the following :
- I have data of several stock market companies.
- They are stored in several folders under a main folder.
- These files are random access files.
- There can be around 4000 files in total for example.

I wrote a program which reads a current csv file and stores contents in array. Then I store name and path of companies in folders (which I was talking about). Then I match one company from csv (stored in array) to companies in user's folder (again reading from array). If found I insert data in the file (random access file). This whole process takes for eg. 2 min my system. A similar program was written years ago by someone in powerbasic which takes slight less time if run one but if run for multiple csv files it takes only a few seconds doing the same thing for other files. When I do the same thing (by writing code to .net dll) and making a dummy app to run it, no matter how many times I run it takes same time. And is way slower than the earlier one (PB) one I was talking about. But if I paste the same code in my win (.net) app and not use .net dll then it runs a bit faster.

I need to show status so if I pass my form's label reference to .net dll and it updates it does that slow down process a lot. As I mentioned I am trying to process the files and it takes longer in .net. What should I do to get best performance? Unfortunately due to unexplainable reasons I cannot change the format or use a db. The files which I am reading/writing (random access files) are use by other products so I have to stick to that format. What I am doing is storing the location of those files in array so that I don't have to search folder again. that is not taking time. But opening reading and writing files is time consuming if I am doing it for few thousand of them. A similar program in powerbasic (developed years ago) runs fast. Running code thru .net dll is slower than running it thru program. Why?
