List Obsolete Classes / Methods In Msbuild
Jun 28, 2010
I have upgraded a visual basic 2005 project to visual basic 2010 (.net framework 4.0). I want to list all obsolete functions used in this project in order to change it with newer ones. How can I treat obsolete functions warnings as errors in visual basic 2010 ms-build?

In .NET you can mark certain methods as obsolete so that developers are alerted when they attempt to use the deprecated method.
<Obsolete("Do not call this method.")> Private Sub FormerMethod()
The thing is you can only do this within classes you control. What do you do when you want your developers to avoid using certain methods on classes provided natively in .NET or by a vendor?
For example, what if you want your developer to prefer some custom extension method on DataTable rather than Select. I'd hate to have to define a custom version of the DataTable class if only to deprecate Select. That would leave us having to police whether or not the custom table was being used.

I used reflection to get the classes, methods inside an Net assembly. Everything works fine when a function only have one version (not overloaded), but when i get overloaded versions i can't get any version...
I build a simple application with a simple class and added a method with two versions, and i can get the correct version using the GetMethod.I don't know if it's the parameters type, but i can get it work. Example, the sub BASS_Init has 2 versions
BASS_Init(ByVal device As Integer, ByVal freq As Integer, ByVal flags As Un4seen.Bass.BASSInit, ByVal win As System.IntPtr, ByVal clsid As System.Guid)and
BASS_Init(ByVal device As Integer, ByVal freq As Integer, ByVal flags As Un4seen.Bass.BASSInit, ByVal win As System.IntPtr) And one of the next two should work, but none works get nothing every time:

My group is attempting to standardize on XML commenting for all of our classes and methods. We like the "Insert comments" option in VS 2005 but would like to add an additional tag <history> to the comments section. I know that we could probably do this manually each time we add a new class, but I would like to be able to have this new section come up automatically when we insert the comment.

We build a class (i.e. Server) and create a LOAD method that loads a dataset with all the details of that object.We need all that information sometimes... but what about when we only need one piece of data from that object (i.e. webserviceUrl).Should we build classes with a bunch of scalar methods that get back single pieces of data as opposed to only getting ALL the data and then only taking what we need?It's a waste to get all the data when we dont always need all of it but it also will take longer to write the extra methods..

I will preface this by saying Im previously an asp developer and am learning oop programming/Vb.Net
Im working on a 3 tier architecture and trying to abstract my code as much as possible since I have a very large intranet to convert. In my business layer I am defining my classes with management methods. Below is an example of one of my classes.
My question: Is there a way for me to genericaly refer to the class type and object type so that I dont have to continualy refer to the class name/type "ServiceRequest" throughout the class. For example something like:

I am working on a VB.Net application that needs to access a web service that I am nearly certain has a C# backend. At bare minimum, the backend is providing classes to me that are differentiated only by case, and within a number of those classes, there are properties and methods that are only differentiated by case.
VB.Net is case insensitive, and it sees a number of these items as being ambiguous.I've thought of a few ways of dealing with this, but I would like suggestions before I go down a road that is likely difficult.
Here are some ways I have considered going about it.Modifying the generated code for the wsdl. This has presented problems in responding as the xml output would no longer conform to the webservice requirements.I think there might be some attributes I could use to override this, but I'm not sure what they are yet. Even so, this web service gets frequent updates and I would hate to have to keep refixing the service every time I refreshed it.Creating a csharp wrapper project where I expose the underlying classes with different names. Primarily through inheritance. Although the big problem here has been the issue with properties and methods that are only differentiated by case as well.
I'm sure at some point I could get one or the other of these solutions working, but if anyone has any better suggestions that I'm not thinking of,

I have an algorithm that "always" runs steps A, C, D in that order.I want to allow a way to run A, B, C, D, where B can be multiple methods. C, D "should" be unaffected, but I cannot parallelize it. It is just writing to a file.Any way, I know a tiny bit about delegates and have used the AddressOf to hook up an event handler.So I was thinking of simply creating an array or collection of what not of "addresses" or delegates.Is this the 'best' way? I know how to force the behavior with objects, but I am hoping to reuse any mechanisms already built in to VB, .NET.

If I run my web service code, it generates a serialized XML with only one level, that is,ParentElement and ChildElement. My goal is to make it a multiple XML levels that even grandChild will show, as the sample output below. How can I achieve this using List ollection looping. Do I need to create several functions that returns List objects for each column of the dataset I have?
public List<MyClassEntity> ExtractEmployee(...params here...)
{
...SQL CONNECTION HERE AND SP TO RUN THE QUERY...

I've got several methods that all need to add items to a single list which will eventually be used to populate a listview. I thought about declaring the list at class level so that all of these methods could access it, but it didnt really make sense as the only methods that access this list are Shared methods, so I didnt think it was worth having a list just sat there for the entire time that any instances of the class are created, when in a lot of cases the list would not be used.
So what I ended up doing was just declaring the list in the Shared method that then calls these other methods that need to add to the list, and for each of these methods it calls it passes the list in as an argument. The methods can then add items to the list and as the list is a reference type it updates the underlying list object, so once all of the methods have been called then the list in the calling method is up to date and can be used. Then when that method exits, the list is no longer in scope and so is removed from memory. This all works fine, but it feels a bit... wrong. Would it be better to just declare the list at Class level and not be bothered about the small overhead of the list always being in scope when instances of this class are created that will not even use the list?
EDIT: Actually, thinking about it.. because the methods that use the list are shared then the list would need to be shared as well if it was at class level - so the list would not only be around when instances of the class are created, but all of the time. So it will just be sat in memory for the lifetime of the program wont it? I assume this could make a noticeable impact on memory usage after the list has been filled with data, so I guess if I went down that route then I would have to make sure I cleared the list once I had populated the listview. This is another reason why it just seems much easier and more manageable to declare the list as a local variable in the shared method that then calls the other methods that also add to the list.

I have 2 lists of classes with thousands of elements. Each class has the same structure.
I need to synchronize the 2 lists by comparing the version, the dateandtime and if they have been labelled to be deleted in one list.
is there any trick to make this very long process as fast as possible apart from splitting the work on threads?

Im having a hard time trying to pass the values from a list inside of a class. Im trying to display multiple lines of values from a list inside of a class. My "client" class stores multiple lines of values into a list(of class transaction), with the number value(num) counting each transaction that it adds to the list.
Code:
Public Class Client
Private m_tranlist As New List(Of transaction)[code]....
im trying to display each line that is stored in the list in a label, and im having major trouble. I know all of the results are added into the lists, but how do i call the list in my main form in order to display each line of all of the values? Would I have to look up an index or something?

If I have a generic.list(of ClassA), is there a simple way to create a deep copy of this list that will not affect the original copy? It seems to work if I have a generic list of Structures, but for some reason the copy constructor for lists of classes only copies pointers to the elements (or maybe a pointer to the whole list?). I would move to structures if it were not for the fact that I can't find a way to edit the members in the structs in the list. eg:list(0).a = 5 'Does not workIs there some way to get around this without declaring an instance of that structure, like this:dim str as StructA = list(0)str.a = 5I'd

I have several different lists I want to call. They all have the same format for the class:
id, value, description, order.
Instead of creating a bunch a classes to return the all of the many lists, I wanted to use generics and just tell it what kind of list to return. However, I can not figure out how to populate the classes.
Here are 2 examples of function in my calling code. This should indicate the type of list and the stored proc used to get the data:
Public Function getTheEyeColors()
Dim glEyeColors As New GenericList
Return glEyeColors.GetALList(Of EyeColor)("GetAllEyeColors")
End Function

I'm using MSBuild (via NAnt) to compile a bunch of VB.NET assemblies. Because these assemblies depend on COM Interop, I need to guarantee that they run in 32-bit mode on 64 bit OS's. I can get the executable assemblies to compile to 32-bit by changing the project in Visual Studio, but I'd really like to be able to force all of the executables to be compiled to 32 bit mode on the build server.I've tried a number of command-line parameters to MSBuild with no luck:
/p:Platform=win32
/p:Platform=x86
/p:ProcessorArchitecture=x86

We have a CMD file which loads an MSBuild XML file and builds and publishes our VB .NET Web App. I noticed today that one of the user controls we're using is not being copied to the UserControls folder in the output directory. However when I build and publish the project from within Visual Studio 2008 that file is there.
I believe the reason this is happening is because the file that is in the UserControls folder in the project is a shortcut to a file in a different solution within the same project. The ItemGroup XML in the MyProject.vbproj file looks like this:
<Content Include="..OtherSolutionUserControlFile.ascx">
<Link>UserControlsUserControlFile.ascx</Link>
</Content>
In the MSBuild.xml file we have, the following is being run after the solution has been built:
<MSBuild Projects="$(ProjectRootPath)MyProject.vbproj"
Targets="_CopyWebApplication;_BuiltWebOutputGroupOutput"
Properties="OutDir=$(BuildFilesPath)" />
why the shortcut is not being copied to the OutDir?

I have recently stumbled across a problem in the last week where Visual Studio (both 2005 and 2008) will lock up while building my solution. The status in Visual Studio will show "started building" or however the first message reads and then just sit there. At this point, the IDE will lock up (focus is lost and I can not regain it) and my machine's CPU usage will go to 100%. The only way to stop it is to force quit the application or process (either Visual Studio or my Command prompt if I am using MSBuild directly). Of course, the system still seems to be trying to process something because my machine still sits at around 100% basically forcing me to restart my machine to try again.

In my VB.NET project I have three configurations DEBUG|TEST|RELEASE.
Currently when I am building using MSbuild and TeamCity I hard code the configuration, which smells badly!, to TEST
<Configuration Condition=" '$(Configuration)' == '' ">Test</Configuration>
Now before everyone screams at me not to hardcode this, the reason this was done was becuase we could NEVER seem to get $(Configuration) populated.
So my question is within MSBuild how can I read the currently selected configuration from the solution file commited to SVN?

I'm trying to convert an existing command line tool into msbuild custom task.This tool logs messages and errors using the System.Console class.I've added to the tool's assembly a class that inherits from Microsoft.Build.Utilities.Task and calls the tool main function, and the custom tool works fine - but no messages/errors are displayed (on the Visual Studio output window).I would like to avoid changing the original tool's code (otherwise I could change every "Console.Error.WriteLine" to "Log.LogError").I thought of changing the stdout and stderr streams of console by calling Console.SetOut and SetError before calling the tool's main function. For that, I would need to implement a class that inherits from TextWriter.

I currently have a nightly build system running as a windows scheduled task, calling at batch file, that works sort of like this: Check out the latest revision from subversion Modify the AssemblyInfo.vb file of the main executable and the librarys to set the version number to 0.0.0.revision Invoke MSBuild to build everything (including the installer) Upload the installer and a log of the build to an FTP server This works ok, but step 2 is dirty and fragile, and I can't imagine that this the only way to do what I want. Any ideas?

I am not sure how clear my question is by the title, but I am trying to make Class methods instead of Instance methods in Visual Basic that way I don't have to waste memory and code creating temporary objects to execute methods that don't need instance variables.
I am not sure if you can do that in VB but I know you can in Objective-C by using either a "+" or "-" sign in front of the method declaration. And in C++ (at least I think, I can't remember) you put the static keyword or const keyword in front of the function.How would I do this in VB if it is possible? Or should I just make a separate set of functions that are not members of a class?
